Most of the ceramic works that I make are non functional vessels but I also like to make these ceramic wall pieces. I like making them with irregular edges that are then contained in a more precise white frame. They have different creative challenges compared with making more 3 dimensional pieces, not least trying to keep them flat as they dry out. I employ all the mark making techniques and materials that I use when making my vessel forms and find that an experimental approach can often lead to new ways of working and different visual outcomes.
I usually have a few pieces available and they can be shipped anywhere in the world.
The frame size of the small ones are 26cm x 29cm
and the larger ones are 38cm x 42cm
Email me if you’d like to see the pieces I have available-

I always enjoy the multiple planes of your vessel forms as if they are companion paintings in conversation. So, alas! Now these must each be a soliloquy! So, so lovely!!!! So evocative and inspiring.

Good afternoon Craig, you have amazing works that I want to look at endlessly. I work in a similar technique, but there is not much space and freedom in my work. I hope to learn this from you by watching your ceramics.

I find these pieces very interesting and I would fill my house with them if my house was more contemporary. My place is a cowboy inspired ranch and would love to see some I may use.

So love your work. You make the process look straightforward but as someone who has previously done pottery making a good slab piece is no mean feet. Very inspiring

@CraigUnderhill7

Generally I use Earthstone ES40 but I experiment with other clays. I also have a grogged terracotta and a heavily grogged black clay that I use.

Beautiful!! I'm curious to know how you mount the pieces in the frames. They appear to be floating in the video.
@CraigUnderhill7
@CraigUnderhill7 11 ай бұрын
There is a piece of thin plywood glued to the back of the ceramic piece. I can screw into this from the back of the frame and it raises them up a little so they float.

I’d need more than a few lines on here to explain. Engobe is a mid point between slip and glaze. I like it because it’s not as matte as slip.

beautiful work! do you teach in the US anywhere?
@CraigUnderhill7
@CraigUnderhill7 Жыл бұрын
No I don’t but have had lots of interest in the USA. I wonder if someone could organise a workshop for me in the USA. Some people actually travel from there to do my workshops in the UK so it would make sense for me to go there.

Do you only bisque fire these since they won’t be handled, or do they need to be glaze fired as well?
@CraigUnderhill7
@CraigUnderhill7 8 ай бұрын
They are all fired at least twice. The bisque / glaze firing difference is not something that really matters to me.

Is “grob” something on the market or is something I can do at home? If I can do at home, is it the collection of what, if I may ask?
@CraigUnderhill7
@CraigUnderhill7 Жыл бұрын
Grog is the material I use to add texture. There are many different types on the market. They are basically crushed pieces of fired clay. You could make your own. I have done a video on adding grog to the surface to create texture, check out the other videos on my channel.
