They are all ceramic colours that are capable of being fired in a kiln which makes them permanent.

your abstarct aesthetic work, i like very much. but to make the same again will be difficult.
@CraigUnderhill76 күн бұрын
To make the same again would be impossible but also undesirable. The uniqueness of each piece is important as is the evolution of my work over time.

Thank you so much for sharing your craftsmanship and experience. Your pieces are lovely! Two quick questions: 1) do you ever use coils to fill the joints inside the pots or do you find the joining strong enough as you show? 2) are you able to reclaim clay with all of the texture you add on the slab?
@CraigUnderhill75 күн бұрын
I rarely use coils on joins mainly because I don’t find them necessary if the joins are good enough. And yes, I reclaim clay with bits of grog in or engobe on because it’s such a small amount of non clay material it makes no real difference. Occasional I throw a piece of clay away if contains a lot of dark coloured or very course grog.

Hi Craig, absolutely love your work, and have learned a lot watching your videos. A question, how do you fix your pieces to the box frames, especially if they're to be transported,. I live on an Island, so anyone purchasing pieces framed from me would have to "Take away" ? Thanks in anticipation. Toby, St martins, Scilly
@CraigUnderhill75 күн бұрын
Hello Toby, I glue a piece of plywood to the back of the ceramic piece, this gives me something I can screw into to attach to the wooden frame.

Not completely water tight. But they are not primarily functional.

I glue a piece of plywood to the back of the ceramic piece and this gives different option to attach it to the wooden frame.

Your method of making larger slab formed vessels seems to work for you, so who am i to make comment. i've been making slab vessels, all kinds of shapes for nearly forty years, and by using armatures of various heights (rolled up carpeting, PVC pipe, rolls up newspaper) you can alter the shape by the way you roll it. All use much duct tape for repeated usage. Do not get r rigid about imperfect tops; tearing into it is half the fun. Use a smaller rolling pin to roll out the connection, and paddle with a big wooden spoon. Ii don't submit videos only for lack of time. Later on, you might experiment with metal insertions; odd metal pieces, interesting stones. I''ll keep up with you, i promise.

I love love love your work. The organic quality of it, and the textures is out of this world. I’m not a potter myself, but I would love to see more of how I could adapt your concepts in your sketchbook to create beautiful sketchbooks for myself. Would you consider making videos of your Sketchbook process and how you actually make them?

Do you cover the slab when drying it to leather hard or just leave it on open air, and for how long pls
@CraigUnderhill72 ай бұрын
It depends on the weather. If it’s sunny and dry then I would slow the drying out by lightly wrapping the slab up. In wetter colder weather I can leave it uncovered and it can take several days to go leatherhard.

there is a freedom here in your work and how you work.... that I haven't ever seen in pottery before. Incredibly refreshing to know I am stepping into an art form (one that I have been afraid to tackle my entire life because I always had an image that these objects are fired and need to be "perfect" to become that permanent ... actually realizing this is how I think of all art that is worthy of hanging on a wall or sitting on a table...hmmm there is some deep psychological personal history lesson in there somewhere, eh?) anyway stepping into this type of expression is eye opening to me. and I am loving it. I cannot wait to work on my own mindset whilst building things that bring me joy, as yours does to you. Thank you so much for sharing this process and letting the process show.

How do you make these AMAZING pastel pencils?!
@CraigUnderhill77 ай бұрын
There are various ways to do this but one way is to get some slip dry it out to a clay consistency and roll it into pastels. To prevent it being so fragile and crumbly you can add some gum arabic, pva glue or fire them to a low temperature (about 500degrees C)

Good evening Craig, Thanks for sharing your beautiful work. the clays you use are for low cooking, or do you use medium temperature stoneware? Thanks for the reply

I use stoneware clay and fire it to 1140C. It’s almost vitrified but not quite but that doesn’t bother me as I see my work as paintings made in clay.
