Dude, congrats on the championship! My first robot was a lifter made of a captain crunch box. I was going to call him captain crush, but changed it to Burn Box after I burned out a servo in it. I built a second robot out of tougher cardboard, based on Dantomkia from Robot Wars. I still haven't named it, though. I became chief engineer of my school robotics club, and we fight them every day we can!

To be fair, I wouldn't say that this would be a cheap bot to build. Cheap on materials, yes, but most of the money goes into electronics. That being said, if you scrounge around for good prices you could probably build something competitive for under $200.

I'd say that the cereal box robot is in the best designed fighting robots I've seen. And I'm taking into account all categories, weights and countries. I don't think I would work if you made a small version to enter into an antweight fight, but I think it would work in the next weight category up. With the drum spinner robot you could mount the motor inside the drum and use the planetary gears from a cordless drill to drive it at a good speed with good torque. This would help by not having any drive belts etc exposed. Keep building and maybe I'll see you in battle.

If you can, try adding a drum inside the mouth to deal damage when the opponent gets inside like mega tento from battlebots
@CarterHurd
@CarterHurd 5 жыл бұрын
Weight. This thing is 12" x 11" by 4", has four drive wheels and a clamp, and is only 1lb. It's already about 1/4th as dense as any of the other antweights. One year I built two 1/2 lb ones, and that video shows just how poor they do when you try stripping out things like the extra two drive wheels in the name of weight. So I could try to add a drum, and it would be possible, but it would do worse in competition. Fewer weapons = more effective. It's best to pick one weapon (clamp, drum, flipper, hammer) and do it really well, especially when you are in a really low weight class and only have 1 lb to work with. Whenever I try multiple weapons (dual Kraves & my latest triangle bot) I'm doing that for fun, not because it's a good design decision if you want to win. BattleBots is a bit different, because there is no trap door. I'm lucky that CIRC has that trap door, it makes control bots more competitive

I am! I haven't really started building yet (12 more days..), but I have 2 ants and 1 beetle spot. Krave will probably return, I'll make a spinner for the 2nd ant, and then I'm not sure what the beetle will be. Perhaps a 2nd try with King Googly.

.... Goes to show when you build a drumb spinner make as many teeth on the drum as you can. And make your battle bot invertable
@CarterHurd
@CarterHurd 6 жыл бұрын
Most experienced builders believe the ideal number of teeth for a drum is one. This maximizes bite. Opponents with ablative armor (like foam) are a rairly encountered exception
@loganhughes2935
@loganhughes2935 6 жыл бұрын
But u can get more hits in with more teeth right?
@CarterHurd
@CarterHurd 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the main goal for most destructive weapons isn't more small hits, the main goal is to catch a big chunk of the opponent and rip it off or send them flying into the air. For this you need to get a good bite on the opponent. A single tooth let's you get this, because you can drive closer to them before that one tooth comes back around, so it catches a bigger chunk of them. It's a bit counterintuitive, but this explanation from Ask Aaron is a good one: "bite is the maximum depth of opponent insertion into the arc of a spinning weapon at a given weapon RPM and forward velocity.... What's the diffference between a little bite and a lot of bite? More match wins! Bite is good, and more bite is better"
@loganhughes2935
@loganhughes2935 6 жыл бұрын
Alta's Projects oh ok. But doesn't yeti have a lot of teeth on that drumb? And he is s one of the best battle bots alive!
@CarterHurd
@CarterHurd 6 жыл бұрын
Yeti is fantastic. It's got 4 teeth, two on one side two on the other (so essentially two teeth locations per 1 rotation). It's a good configuration that's easier to balance than a single tooth drum like Minotaur uses, but won't get quite as much bite as a single tooth would. Yeti runs their drum a bit slower as a result (faster drums store more energy but it's harder to get a good bite at high rpm, two teeth locations per rotation means they can't run quite as fast and still get good bite as minitour can get away with)

@CarterHurd
