Western fan but not a Kevin Costner fan with a couple of exceptions, I saw this today and loved it. I absolutely could have marched right back into that theater and watched another 3 hours part 2. I genuinely cared about these characters and what happens to them. If you love westerns or epic cinematography go see it on a big screen, don't listen to the naysayers complaining about the length or other things.

The tepid reviews are actually really worrying to me because I'm realizing how lazy, stupid, and shallow many of the "critics" have become. I said this elsewhere: give people a choice between a well-prepared steak dinner and a gas station sandwich and too many people will choose the gas station sandwich. At the end of the day I suppose it doesn't matter much because the movie exists and I get to enjoy it, but it's a sad time for our culture when we lap up mediocrity and feed the worst practices.

This was a brutal portrayal of the birth of a civilization, a society and culture, crawling through its infancy, from different origins but with an almost universal instinct of survival and how to maintain it. I will be there on August 16th to participate as the clash of these trails explode in a place named Horizon and stumble into adolescence on their way to being molded by their culminated pressure chamber of restrictive environment. Rest assured, I do trust that Mr. Costner will continually increase the brightness within the mind’s eye and the warmth of the hope in hearts of the audiences as he brings about a stunning conclusion in an epic example of the historical Western vision. As for Chapter I? Being blinded by the brilliance of genius can negate the opportunity to be blessed by it. Do not miss the chance offered with Horizon. Bravo, Mr. Costner. All the best in your future endeavors.

Just got out of the theater. I'm floored by Horizon. I expected a slow burn. When people say "nothing happens", or that it's "boring", then I know it's the kind of movie I'm looking for. Two of my favorites are Blade Runner 2049 and Apocalypse Now Redux, two epic movies that were deemed too long. The funniest thing that's been said about it is : "I can't help but feel that Part 1 is for characters and stories to be put in context, that it feels like the beginning of something bigger." Duh! It is Kevin Costner's best work and I am craving for Part 2. Part 3 is being shot, so we know we'll get this one too. It is the most beautiful western I've ever seen. Unforgiven is my all time favorite. I love the Sergio Leone flicks too, but I prefer this kind of cinema. Masterful. Costner doesn't seem to care if it ultimately fails moneywise. I think that it's the critics that have failed big time!

I just got out of a screening and felt l needed to leave a followup comment. I was really looking forward to this film, so l am sad to say l left at the 90 minute point. Why? To be honest, it just wasn't involving for me. I felt cold watching it. I am a big admirer of Costner's work and l love westerns, but this felt odd. I had read an earlier complaint by someone who said that this film looked like it had been shot for television. It did. Filled with tight shots and closeups, all action seemed to gravitate toward the center of the screen. Also, Costner did something l feared he would repeat in this film - he over-orchestrated it. Ever single scene is filled with that overwrought 1980's- styled soundtrack (see his extended version of Wyatt Earp for an example of how a overwrought soundtrack can ruin a film). Everything from pounding drums to chimes to angelic choruses is used here, to extreme affect. It is as if Costner didn't trust his actors to do their work - we had to be reminded that we are watching an epic film with more music than can be packed in a dozen other features. I hope this movie finds an audience. I suspect good word-of-mouth will sell it. I went to a 4:00 matine and it was nearly full, with people of all ages, which was great. I will definitely purchase the disc of this when it comes out, as l want to support his efforts and projects like this. But maybe this film, for me at least, will play better on the small screen. It just didn't work for me in the theater. I could be very wrong on this one. The hard, sincere work of hundreds of professionals is apparent and on the screen here - but l just couldn't find a character or scenario to identify with.

Greetings! I went back for a full viewing and while l enjoyed the final hour much more than the first two, l think there needed to be some work in the script, highlighting one or two characters to make them more prominent. I sat for three hours and watched a number of scenarios, but adding up to what? I contrast this to the first 3 hours of Taylor's 1883 series, which while also harsh and brutal, clearly has a strongly written narrative and a leading voice. I also found the characters much more interesting and complex, surprising specially when you consider what a mess he made of Yellowstone before he started cranking out the sequels. As for Costner's politics, he recently voiced support for Liz Chaney. Really? Regardless of which side he leans, she's not even a minor contender and runs with the deep state pack, and l would hope, as an artist, he would stay out of the frey. But to each his own. He still is an amazing filmmaker!

@CerealAtMidnight Hi Heath, I'm a regular here and always enjoy watching your videos. However, I find your comments on the supposed shallowness and stupidity of "critics" concerning. That is the same kind of rhetoric used by Marvel superfans and casual movie goers to deflect criticism and defend their enjoyment of largely commercial and mainstream cinema. "Critics" are not a singular entity nor do they exist on some ivory tower (many of them living on low wages and a love of cinema). In fact, some of these supposedly "new critics" who dislike the film are actually ones that contribute to some of the blu-rays you might review and have been writing on film for decades. I watched this movie today, and while I mostly enjoyed it, many of the criticisms leveled at the film aren't fabricated from nothing. The film has four narrative threads structured similarly to an episode of TV and the film ends with an *extended* trailer for the next film rather than an actual conclusion. Don't let your love for a movie foster hate or resentment for a group of people. Critics are not your enemy.
@drew311stylee

@@HuntersCinema critics may not be the enemy, but critics from back in our day often had to have some sort of minimal credentials. I know you won't receive what I'm saying right now, but Roger Ebert was respected and listened to first because he earned it (and was well educated and was the critic for the Chicago Sun-Times) and continued to earn it. It's a different landscape now because many critics are just bloggers without any sort of real credentials or reason to listen to them. I haven't read any reviews on Horizon but I can certainly imagine. Are they the enemy? No. Are they highly predictable and prone to judging movies based on what they aren't rather than what they are? Often yes. I don't put much stock in the bloggers these days.

For some reason, Kevin Costner has always been the victim of Hollywood snark. When he was making Dances With Wolves, it was being demeaned as "Kevin's Gate" (after Heaven's Gate), and no-one had even seen it! I like this kind of art being created. It's the antithesis of Franchise moviemaking. One guy puts all his effort and love and money into creating something that he HAS to make, regardless of whether it's what is currently selling. In press interviews to promote the film he's very aware of the risk he's taking but he believes in it so much that it's worth it for him. This is definitely up there with How The West Was Won, Once Upon a Time in The West, and The Big Trail (1930) in terms of scope. It’s a shame that it didn’t do well & the second part had to be pushed back. The cast of characters were engaging, and Costner managed to capture that John Ford feel. The movie had everything you could want in a Western. The Western definitely needs to be mainstream again because it’s a part of American culture. Unfortunately these days certain genre films like the musical and the Western struggle in theaters. If only studios had units devoted to these genres like they did back in the Golden Age (ex. Arthur Freed at MGM or Republic Pictures having Westerns be one of their main products).

Boring, dull, a mixed bag of poorly written characters relying on some talented actors to dirt into gold. It wasn't that violent. The action sequences were so sparse that felt so far apart which really didn't help with the pacing. There really wasn't much story at all. You could feel the gaps in the narrative. The cinematography was definitely well done, but really unable to make up for all of its deficiencies. The score was actually surprisingly lackluster, until the closing credits, which should really be a much easier aspect of the film to accomplish. You mentioned Yellowstone, but neglected to mention1883. 1883 alone is a vastly superior story and product compared to this first chapter of Horizon. 1883 was filled with powerful performances from faces both familiar and new, with beautiful look and emotional impact that you wanting more and disappointed when you had to remind yourself it just a limited series. I love Silverado, Dances with Wolves and Open Range. And unlike others I love Waterworld and The Postman. Dances with Wolves, Waterworld and The Postman are so well done that their length is hardly noticeable. Horizon on the other hand was so painfully dull and disappointing that I felt every minute. You mentioned that Kevin Costner's character doesn't even show up until you're well into the movie and boy were you right. I wish that the film had been top notch until his entrance, but it wasn't. Also there are scenes in the trailers and a specific scene Costner shared during his talk show promo tour that weren't even a part of this chapter. This, along with the scenes of what's to come left me feeling lied to and cheated. And, yes believe it or not, agree or not, it is extremely disappointing to know that this film/project appears to be the primary factor in bringing an excellent, compelling TV show to an earlier than expected end. I really wanted to like this one, but it ended up being the 2nd worst movie of the year so far, including anything I've seen that was direct to streaming. The Road House reboot was leaps and bounds above this movie in entertainment value.

I am actually just grateful that Kevin Costner has created this. Critics are crazy. I enjoyed every second of immersion in this movie...I find myself convincingly transported to another time and place. I hope so very much that he makes all 4 parts.

I'm guessing the four chapters will be made and shown; and that the definite review is still a long way away from that day. It's just so big and it's way too early to say what its true import will be. WTF is Costner thinking? We'll see.

I hope not, but it's far, far away from the kind of mindless crap that clogs up the box office week after week. There are no spaceships, no cars driving on submarines, and no cartoon characters being used to sell products. Really hoping adults show up for some mature storytelling here, but even if they don't, both Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are done. They exist, and they will be seen and appreciated in time.

Ironically, we're living in a modern golden age for the western, but getting people to get out of their houses and support something in a movie theater like we did just a few years ago is a real tough proposition. We complain about the lack of variety in our movies, but we're voting with our wallets every day.

Not seen yet but the only complaint that I have heard is that it is just a multiple beginnings of a story and therefore doesn't feel like an actual film but more likely a part of a miniseries. It's also shot like a TV show and not like an old western. But will be seeing it once possible.

I saw this on a Thursday matinee. I loved loved this movie. Had a low bar due to reviews but this was just wonderful on so many levels. This was just a set up...geez, I'm all in for the second in this series. I have read some reviews that people were confused by storylines. My gosh, they must have the attention span of Dory, not surprising in this TikTok age. The story lines were clearly unique and interesting. I honestly put this up with and probably surpassing Dune2 for my favorite film this year and probably a decade.

I don't understand the negative reviews at all, but your comment about the small attention spans leading to confusion rings true. The movie doesn't take us anywhere that we can't follow. I'm hearing criticisms about both this film and The Bikeriders that aren't valid--people simply not paying attention and then blaming the movie for not holding their hand.

I don't know if people, generally, are hardwired towards a given attention span ... I think it varies from person to person, like everything else in this world... but I would love to be able to get a Coke or an Icee (or a Coke Icee) prior to the movie, and not worry about whether or not I am going to need to miss five minutes to take a wee. But an argument against a hardwired attention span might be made, noting not only, say, TITANIC or the LORD OF THE RINGS movies (especially the Director Cuts), but also the Roadshow Spectaculars from the past, such as GONE WITH THE WIND, THE TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN HUR, or THE SOUND OF MUSIC. I do wish that the more recent ones would follow the lead of the older ones by adding an intermission. If someone's movie is already in excess of three hours long, the addition of an extra fifteen minutes to spare the audience the indignity of having to wear Depends or, worse, a catheter, is not exactly going to have any bearing on whether or not they can squeeze in another showing, unless the theater in question has a 24-hour performance cycle. Since you have said that this one is even bigger than HOW THE WEST WAS WON, a movie I so wish I could see in the original Cinerama, I am intrigued.

There's even a great place to put an intermission in this movie, but unfortunately we don't have them anymore, presumably so theaters can add an extra screening each day. Commerce tops comfort every time.

I completely agree with your review of the film. Apart from the story, which is riveting, I felt, maybe for the first time, that I was truely transported back in time. Kevin Costner has managed to create a time machine that puts you directly into the mid to latter part of the 19th century. I have to see this movie again (and again)

"There's no way to talk about this movie in terms of what's actually in it, because actually EVERYTHING is in it." Well ... everything except for a conclusion. It's 3 hours of set-up. Perhaps EVERYTHING will be in it when the other parts come out, but there's a lot missing from this particular film.

We know that going in. When Frodo and Sam wander out of the sunlight and into the shadow of Mordor at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring, there was ZERO discussion about how it wasn't a complete movie. We know what we're signing up for when we buy a ticket for a movie that's part 1 of a saga. Also, it's not just 3 hours of set up. There are character arcs that are fully completed. Just not those of our main characters.

Whether you feel like you would like it or not, it is worth supporting to break the monopoly of un-inspired re-treads that Hollywood continues to push down our throats. Costner self-funded and bridged the other funding with private funding, not studio money... Think of your $10 ticket as a donation to the arts. I went in with low expectations and came out extremely satisfied.
