I love L&H. My dad would sit with me and we would watch them on Channel 11 WPIX in the 1960's and he would tell me what it was like to see them in the movies when he was a little boy. He would still laugh and they would make you feel so good. They were master artists at the height of their craft. The world was blessed to have them brighten our lives.😊

I'm very glad that you made this documentary archiving the archivist Randy Skretvedt, because of his love of Laurel and Hardy he became a part of the Laurel and Hardy story so I'm glad that we can know something about him more than just his name on a book jacket.

As a young boy in 1950s NYC, I went to movie theaters a lot. But I also loved tuning into The Million Dollar Movie on channel 9. That's how I also was first exposed to Laurel and Hardy, as well as great movies from the 1930s and 1940s. Somehow, the weekly broadcasts of that channel got me more hooked than random public domain offerings I have to seek out on KZbin. Thanks to shows like Cereal at Midnight, I get some guidance I need to decide which movies to buy. Thank you!

I watched these films on TV growing up in the '70s and I'd call myself a soft fan, though certainly loyal, but not a hardcore L&H fan, but I've always enjoyed and respected the love and dedication of the L&H fandom and their efforts to keep the films in the public eye and media circulation. One of the most fun times I ever had at a movie house back in the 1980s was a one-man-band musician playing his crazy musical contraption during a screening of L&H's Liberty and some other films.

Right? I'd much rather see Laurel and Hardy, W.C. Fields, The Marx Brothers, Abbott and Costello, or even old monster movies instead of infomercials.

THE GOLDEN AGE OF COMEDY is exactly how I had my first exposure to Laurel & Hardy as well, and also the Marx Brothers, and I believe The Big 3 as well.

When I was growing up, we used to see silent movie compilations on UK tv quite often. An English comedian called Bob Monkhouse used to host some of the shows. I think he actually collected the films (reels) as a hobby, and shared them. The talkies of Laurel & Hardy, the Marx Bros, etc, were shown often on tv as well. So people my age were very familiar with Keaton, Lauren & Hardy, the Keystone Cops, Harry Langdon, etc. (I'm about Randy's age). As you alluded to, there's so much now, but the algorithm tailors it to what you've seen already, so you it's harder to discover anything new in some ways, because on streaming nothing is random.

Wonderful stuff Really loved the interview. And it's made me think how lucky I was growing up in England in the 50s and 60s. I went to the Saturday morning children's matinees and usually there was a Laurel and Hardy short sometimes a feature length also Charlie Chaplin and even I remember a full length feature silent film of Samson and Delilah. It was normal back then. So that all those films are coming out on fisical media is so great and other generation will have a chance to discover laurel and Hardy. 😊

"The Music Box" just makes me cry laughing every time I watch it...when Laurel walks that ladder into Hardy's eye...it makes me laugh just writing this. I'm very glad these shorts exist in such fine form now on disc.

It was pretty informative. Randy certainly knows Laurel and Hardy better than anyone, likely more than the average fan does. And it's always interesting to hear about the restoration process and how they originally did it.

9:53 This too was touched on in the brilliant Keanu Reeves doc. Side by Side. A question. Wouldn’t you have multiple back ups of all your films that are in digital format anyway? You are not going to spend all kinds of money and time only to have a few HDDs kicking around. Right? So the likelihood of these digital films being lost forever is super slim compared to film. It’s understood we have a better sense on how to store films nowadays vs way back when, but, we also (when it comes to HDDs) have a pretty good idea of how to recover digital files when an HDD gets corrupted. Let’s face it., if given a choice, most people would store film onto HDDs to begin with. I get that on the surface it is a pretty decent argument to make in favour of film vs digital, but, both formats really can co-exist. Film will never truly go away. Call me old school though, but I’ll always prefer film over video. 😁

I think the fear of any digital medium is some sort of corruption or even data loss from something like an EMP, but that's not really something I feel qualified to speak on. Digital is intangible and therefore impermanent, at least compared to the 100 year longevity of something like film, which has a physical record. But then again, everyone involved in this conversation is very pro-film and pro-physical.
