Thanks for the update, Heath. I plan to make this unique release my holiday gift to myself. Remember seeing many of these classics on local weekend television when l was a kid and loved them. They are well worth the price, and happy people are able to purchase. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Thank you VERY much for your kind comments about me, and more importantly, about this great new release! I helped with the bonus goodies, but the real work in the trenches was done by the wizards at Lobster Films in Paris and Blackhawk Films in Burbank. Yes, these films look incredible, they have excellent scores (two or three on several of the titles) and they are FUNNY! If you have only seen comedies from the '90s and beyond -- watch the masters, the guys who learned how to be funny by appearing in front of audiences in vaudeville theaters day in, day out, for years. They knew their art and their craft, as did the people behind the camera. These films are a master class in composition and editing. Anyway, please support this release and BUY IT. You won't be disappointed. And if you have kids, show these films to them. If they're pre-teens, they shouldn't run screaming from something in black and white.

The Laurel and Hardy films getting the love that is long overdue.

Oh, this makes my heart happy. My grandparents introduced me to Laurel & Hardy when I was a kid in the 90s and I loved them so much. I recently got the Definitive Restorations from Kit Parker Films, and Year One from Flicker is on my wish list. Looks like I get to add year two now, too!

This release of Laurel and Hardy 1928 films is primarily due to the fact that films made in 1928 or before are no longer under copyright protection. That means the current copyright holders can no longer prevent their release by other companies due to rights issues which has been the case for these silents for decades. Add in the involvement of the people at Blackhawk, Lobster Films and many other L&H experts who have produced this set and you have a state of the art restoration of these films. It’s about time these films finally get the respect they have ALWAYS deserved.

The guy who owns (owned) the rights to the silents has been promising to restore and release them for decades. Many of us sent him money to pre-order the products. He just sat on them. He disconnected his phone years ago, as some of us were calling and only got his wife who told us that he was dying of nitrate poisoning. About 30 years later, he's still around. Fortunately, '27 and '28 have fallen into the Public Domain. One more year to go, as the sound films are all readily available.

You're happy? I'm happy bro that you're covering The Boys, and doing it right all the way down the line. Getting to see them projected in a theater with an audience that appreciates the visual nuances even in the broadest slapstick. I've been watching them on TV since I was a kid in the '60s/70s, then catching them at museums and old movie houses in the 1980s and then through all the many and always improving video format releases. Used to read the online fan clubs, even though I never consider myself an obsessed fanboy. I am just a cinephile in general and love to see these two gentleman remaining relevant and great 100 years later.

Appreciate you highlighting silent films. As for these releases, I will also point people to the Eureka Masters of Cinema release of the first volume. They have different extras, including different commentaries. I have both, and I hope Eureka puts out this second volume as well.

You're telling me you've build a time machine... Into a Laurel & Hardy disc??? 😮 Fun fact: In Germany those names won't ring a bell with most people anymore since they've always been called "Dick & Doof" over here. That translates to "Fat & Stupid", which sounds way meaner than its supposed to be, so maybe Chubby & Silly would be a better comparison. But their shows and movies have rarely had their real names attached to them in Germany. You'd just see them in the credits.

There are two ways to do public domain material. The most common way is grab the cheapest print you can find and just put it out. Or you can treat it like a fully licensed film release and try to make it look good and, yes, preservation. More companies need to do this. But between greed and convoluted laws (usually created by greed) too many things slip through the cracks. I'm not saying get rid of copyright, but I do think there is a time and place to make it less restrictive. Also, it's not always easy to license things - in fact, it's almost never easy. However, we are here to be happy that this release exists, so I shall get off my soap box and put on my little propeller hat instead.
