Florence's grandmother is a key player in the mood and storytelling in her lyricism. Her grandmother, unfortunately, took her own life when Flo was a child, and the song is about Flo receiving important advice from her ghost in a dream regarding her career. I am so glad you loved Only If For A Night...it's her most ILLEGAL intro track in all her albums me thinks!!! PS: No worries, Ceremonials isn't for everyone. THANK YOU SO MUCH for being open and honest.

Girl let me tell you something, what the water gave me is the definition of a GROWER, I hated it in the first listen, then you feel the magic coming in, and suddenly you’re addicted. Also breaking down is a contrast an upbeat instrumental from a lyric saying that depression is taking over control of her again.

I think she could hold that note for 30 s or something live) BTW, why did you skip Bedroom hymns, Remain nameless, Strangeness and Carm, Breath of life?

Glad you enjoyed this album! I'd probably say this is the saddest of the albums and a fan favourite - definitely had a chuckle with your happy dance contrasting Breaking Down's depressive lyrics XD I hope you get to check out the later albums too. High as Hope is my favourite album for the opposite reasons Ceremonials is my 2nd favourite but definitely a lot of vibes and can take a second or third listen listen to truly enjoy a Florence album. It even took me seeing them live to be a fan and I haven't looked back!

You NEED to watch her live concert on the Royal Albert Hall. It's on youtube, and it takes you out of earth. This album was one of my biggest obsessions in the last decade, it sounded so new, so fresh, it hounded for YEARS. And nowadays it feels like a comfort place that I like to come back to. The first lines "And I had a dream // About my old school // And she was there all pink and gold and glittering" instantaneously make me travel back in time. Never let me go was my rock through really tough times, and it makes tear up even today, and get the chills. And it's funny, this ethereal vibe of hers almost make me feel like she's actually singing from some place inside my head, and not on the outside.

" It's giving Aurora " , yep a good 6-7 yrs before Aurora. Aurora is pretentious now and tries to deny Florence's influence on her ( which she formerly admitted to ) to be more " Indie " lmao Aurora is a bit cringey tbh I had to stop watching her lives. But no one can REALLY give what Florence does in my opinion. She pockets idiosyncrasies in a way that they're pinnacle moments of the song and make her so difficult to cover. They're really STRUCTURED to her vocal styling and flourishes. NO ONE in modern music to me understands timber and fluctuations and color shifting how she does in my opinion. Also that note in No Light No Light? She holds it regularly. It's usually extended to 22 seconds but she has held it up to 28 seconds before. But yeah one thing I'll say about Florence is she is an immaculate writer. She can do small songs, big songs , light, heavy, dark , bright, colorful, grim. You'll never find Aurora bringing the Gothic drama like that.

You grew up listening to Florence, you're allowed to be inspired. Florence has inspired plenty of women in Indie. Ethel Cain Aurora Maggie Rogers Lorde ( to the point she cited her multiple times and cosplayed her Sweet Nothing appearance and background + Green Light's video pulled from Third Eye ) King Princess Like, girl it's not that big a deal lmao

I think it's funny because when Ceremonials came out i was HOOKED AS HELL on that album, but being a fan that has been a fan for so long that has a crictical view on the band's bodywork, it's my least favorite album from Florence and her machine. It was a turning point in so many ways for her music. Spectrum, What The Water Gave Me, All This and Heaven Too, Leave My Body and Lover to Lover are the keepers for me. Seeing her live during that album tour was also challenging because she wanted to sound every inch as good as the production on the record, so it was a hit or miss.
