The last few days I was struggling with some hard feeling - and Florence’s music always had helped me dealing with them -, so when I came back home after a long day, I thought what if you had reacted to HaH, because I really wanted to. I open KZbin and there it was. I felt like this was not random. And it wasn’t. Florence music and your words really helped today. Thank you. Even though you talked mostly about yourself, love and loneliness are universal and what you said was something that I was really needed. Like a reminder.

100% agree with what you said at the start in the vlogs. What sets you apart from other reactors is that you show us who you are as a person and don’t just sit infront of a camera and Bob ur head to whatever music is trending and briefly say if you like something or not. As someone who love Ceremonials, this took me a long time to like. But now, I have a greater appreciation of this album. I think Florence said that this is her all mature. She’s already clean and sober as well. Florence’s childhood is not the best-her parent divorced, and she lost her grandmother who she loved dearly to s*icide. So love and intimacy doesn’t necessarily come to her so easily, or if it does, it is not the healthy type. The MV of Hunger is so good-she dances so beautifully. When you said that Big God starts dark and like crawling, the MV exactly is that-it has an all-black background and she was crawling. But Sky Full of Song really resonated with me-that feeling of floating away and wanting somebody to just hold me, and hold me down. The lines “Take me down, I’m so tired now / Leave me where I lie/ I thought I was flying but maybe I’m dying tonight” just makes me so emotional. As someone who also has been living with a mental health issue, this hits so close to home. But on a lighter note, a fun fact-Florence performed at the Spotify concert in NY and it was an open-air concert. It was a supposedly clear night but when she sang Sky Full of Song, strong winds suddenly blew and when she sang the lines “I couldn’t hide from the thunder in a sky full of song”, there suddenly was thunder. And the wind blew so strong that her band members were having a hard time playing and the drum’s cymbals fell, exactly when she sang “Hold me down…”

June is also an homage for the Orlando Massacre victims, ("Heavy days in June/when love became an act of defiance/choirs sing in the street/always down to hide with you") I think it's really beautiful how she narrates the events from her point of view, waking up and seeing the sky black and just watching the news all day long 38:15 Patti actually 'passed down the torch' by giving Flo her famous Lightning Bolt tattoo! No Choir goes full circle by referencing "Two people sitting doing nothing" and how you can't make a big event out of everything. Happiness is an uneventful subject because when you feel simply happy there's no choir, no big tragedy to sing about, and how it's okay to just be in the moment. I wonder if you would be interested in making a video reacting to Hunger, Big God, SFOS and SLD music videos, loved your reaction and your thoughts, Fern. ♥

I mentioned this in another reactor's channel about the song Patricia, the outro specifically is the first time where Florence incorporated musical elements from her previous albums...the harp is very Lungs era, the chanting and cello is very Ceremonials era, the horns are definitely HBHBHB era...and they all tie into this new era High As Hope. It's really brilliant.

In the last song the lyric, "Happiness is uneventful," (or whatever the exact wording was) immediately made me think of not needing big events to make me happy. Being happy just by the smallest and seemingly insignificant moments. It reminded me of you video/spoken poem that you uploaded a while ago. Because I guess I feel pointlessly happy in nature so often. It doesn't make much sense that just existing in a place where I can smell the Earth in the air would make me happier than being somewhere where I can't but anyway; I think it's okay to be "pointlessly" happy. You don't need there to be a point for happiness. It just is. Anywho, have a nice rest of your day/night/in-between!

I came back to this video because I just love the feeling I get when I experience great new music for the first time and your reaction captured that feeling perfectly and it made me listen to High As Hope again (I haven't listened to it in a while). great review fern. this album was a hard left turn for me as a f+tm fan. i always loved the music from previous albums, but i felt like it was so difficult to listen for extended periods of time because the sheer strength of each performance. they would always wear me out after like 20 minutes. this album was so meditative and focused comparatively. i was able to really pour over it for hours at a time, which is my favorite way to enjoy music. HaH also showed me that there's way, way more to florence's vocals and songwriting than "big" and "feel" - she has a lot of subtlety and technique in her craft that can get lost in the grandiosity of her previous work. the storytelling in "hunger" and "100 years" especially touched my soul. HaH really made me realize that this band gives listeners so many gifts with every album. they would have been fine with the good will they generated with lungs and ceremonials, but they always push in new directions, even if it's not necessarily what fans expect (or want). i really appreciate that kind of courage in an artist.

You would describe colours the same way as I would do it (they are a bit different but close to each other), you can see through her lyrics and your thoughts are close to mine... you are feeling Flo's art the same way as I am. It is peculiar because I'm not from England, USA or other English-speaking country. For me, it's the sign that Florence is pure gold.... she can touch my soul even if we don't have the same experience because of cultural differences. Her poetry, lyrics and story are monumental. I think this is the album that divides the FATM fandom lols...some really loved it and some pretend that this album didnt exist xd...but for me personally this my ranking: 1.
