The album/film is based off of Freud's theory of the "Madonna/Whore" complex. The idea that a woman in society is either viewed (by men) as a pure, innocent, nurturing caretaker, or an impulsive, wreckless, sexual degenerate. To have both is perceived as unnatural. This is Halsey's way of reclaiming her identity and establishing the fact that they can have one side of that dichotomy without destroying or sabotaging the other. The "dark Halsey" is the emodiment of promiscuity, while the "light Halsey" is the softer, more maternal end of that spectrum.

Anyone recognizing the transition from bells in Santa fee and easier than lying not only in the production but also lyrically wise? Bells in Santa Fee is ending with a repetitive "all of this is temporary" and the last one ends with "all of this is..." then it transfers into the next song. It's starting on its own without lyrics directly in the beginning. But the cut off "All of this is..." combined with the next title it is saying: "All of this is easier than lying." that's why I love the transition so much 👀 So "all of this is temporary" + "losing you is easier than lying to myself that you love me" = "All of this is easier than lying" 😱 genius

I think (with lots of help from Reddit) that dark Halsey represented Lilith, who is like the first demon. Apparently she enters you through mirrors and possesses you. So she wants power and control, but light Halsey craves love and emotion. When she can’t get love, she makes a deal with Lilith so that she can have power to kill her husband. Her and Lilith then become one. When light Halsey (named queen Lila, so Lila/Lilith are opposites) dies, Lilith is free from her body and kills everyone to get revenge. The film is also described as like paranormal bc of women’s bodies being able to create life and end it? In my head, dark Halsey got light Halsey pregnant and created the life and ended all the royalties life at the end, and light Halsey also like created life and ended it by killing the king. But I don’t know. I watched it on Saturday and I’m still trying to figure it out LOL
@nordury3 жыл бұрын
Oh, thanks for the theory. I thought that the *dark* Lila was just the darker part of herself and she discovered it and that changed her life??? idk And I believe in the end Lila poisoned the food (because there was a table shown while she was heading to the guillotine), and everyone died after Lila had been beheaded. And this dark Lila was just a symbol of her revenge and power.

Definitely my favorite album in a while. I always knew that NIN would make a nice combo with a good female vocalist who can write solid pop hooks. I mean, we kind of got taste with HTDA, but that stuff was very subdued, industrial and didn't have many hooks. I gotta give props to Halsey; the girl can sing. I wasn't sure, considering how heavily auto-tuned and processed her vocs are on the other albums. I also wasn't sure about how I would take all that edgy feminism, LGBTism and pregnancy stuff that was promised for the album, but she made it diluted, tasteful and generalized enough, so that it wasn't too gross, annoying or preachy... definitely didn't ruin the album. I (as a hetero man) could actually associate with most of the lyrics. Have you heard Meg Myers? I just discovered her for myself recently. Go listen/watch "Desire" if you haven't already. It's like the perfect female response to "Closer" and is amazing, not to mention hot AF. That girl is very dark, passionate, super expressive and always loved NIN. I really wish Trenticus collaborated with her when she was making music like that 7 or so years ago. Would've been perfect, She would've made a great waifu for Trent if he wasn't already taken too.:)

My thoughts and interpretations about some of the songs: The tradition: I think the song is about human trafficking , violence and prostitution. Pay attention to the lines"is bought for pennies a price " and "the buyer always brings her back because all she does is cry " And it is kind of scary and disturbing how this is embedded in "the tradition" Bells in Santa Fe : I think this song is written from the perspective of Halsey's child who didn't make it. "Don't call me by my name " , "all of this is temporary" "Don't wait for me, it's not a happy ending" . This song just makes me cry :( Easier than lying: "Losing you is easier than lying to myself that you loved me " this hits hard Darling: I think this song is a lullaby for her son Ender. "Darling don't weep there's a place for me" "Foolish men have tried but only you have shown me how to love being alive" 😭 Whispers: "camouflage so you can feed the lie that you're composed" How tf can she express everything in lyrics Why do you need love so badly? Bet it's because of her Daddy Daddy issues 😭 The lighthouse: I think this song tells us the story of her life "from a tender age I was cursed with rage" "I never wanted saving I just wanted to be found" 1121: if I am not wrong this was the date when Ashley found she is pregnant "And I won't die for love but ever since I met you you could have my heart and I would break it for you" I think this line is dedicated to her son.This song shows us her strong and vulnerable side at the same time

I’ve been having similar thoughts about The Tradition as well. I think from memory that Halsey’s Queen in the film starts out as a prostitute, so I think your on the nose with that part. Okay so this entire masterpiece aside-THANK YOU for respecting the "they" part of Halsey's she/they pronouns -someone who also uses she/they pronouns but literally never gets called by the latter
@MaddyPerez1283 жыл бұрын
I thought that when someone has their pronouns as she/they or they/she it means they prefer the first pronoun, in Halsey’s case it would be she. At least that’s what I was told, im not sure
@AmberWoodMusicx3 жыл бұрын
@@MaddyPerez128 when I watched an interview halsey called herself ‘she’

@@MaddyPerez128 I use she/they and I (as well as many others with those pronouns) like for them to be used interchangeably. While people who use they/she usually prefers using they/them pronouns. But ofc it’s always up to the individual and the way they view their pronouns, gender expression, and gender identity💕

@@AmberWoodMusicx halsey's pronouns are she/they meaning it's interchangeable. she's still gonna refer to herself as 'she' because it's one of their pronouns. as a fellow she/they i wish people would use my they pronouns more :( it's all abt the balance

With Reznor and Ross supporting such a weighty artistic vision, Halsey takes a huge leap forward with this course-changing opus, a revelation that finally presents their most authentic representation of self.

This album is my favorite of the year, as Trent and Atticus crafted such a great soundscape to deliver Halsey’s words and voice. Ashley, you should definitely check out some NIN … start with Hurt, Something You Can Never Have, Ringfinger, and The Day the World Went Away. If you like those, welcome to a new musical world. 🙂
