Faufaun really nailed down, but I think the theme goes like this - Millennial/Old Internet memes: ironic, direct, "vignette" style. Age of things like Bottom Text, Advice Animals and Paint-drawn Rage Comics. Their legacy lingers in the "comic format" memes based around characters like Gigachad, Doomer and Wojak - Boomer memes: Came immediately after the previous, as more baby boomers approached socials. An oversemplification of Old Internet memes. Spawned deep-fried memes full of emoji stickers on pop culture characters. In case you're asking, yes, most AMOGUS memes can fall into this - Zoomer/GenZ memes: brought memes into "post-ironic" territory. Memes became a social commentary, and brought an underlying need to make it feel like you're supposed to laugh "at" the humor attempt and not "because of" it. But on the other hand, Zoomers broke down the structurization of original Old Internet memes, so that every image, GIF, short video or audio bit, with minimal tweaking, can become its own meme. Zoomer memes, by definition, refuse categorization

@@Voltlighter that's the point, in those memes the observers are probably either supposed to laugh at the meme per se, or just read the context of it without trying to laugh at it. Zoomer memes have become more than comical vignettes, they are a bona-fide communication medium

You know it’s interesting that there’s a clear gap where the internet goes from chat rooms and personal webpages to mainstream websites where all those memes are lost to the ages or are so interconnected with general internet culture that no one thinks about how old they are. It’s that generational gap between millennials and boomers where people had the internet but it was not particularly popular. Just interesting to think about

@@majeh8060 well I'm 33 and Charlie the unicorn and salad fingers were popular around middle school for me. Also the emo trend seemed to fizzle out before 2010. Depending on her parents and what she was allowed to see she could be from 27-30 I'd say but potentially older. She may have also just done a deep dive on early 2000's culture and likes it. Gura pops off 80's facts speaking like she was there and she's definitely not 40

so when it comes to memes of these ages in boomer memes there is a sincerity layered with hyperbole in millennial memes observational and absurdist are most popular with zoomer memes irony layered with late stage absurdist crossing into surrealist though you will also notice the nihilism that was just under the surface in millennial memes is very recently bursting to the surface in zoomer memes causing the millennial subtype of "doomer" to become mainstream

Actual Baby Boomers were born in the 1950s, They range 78-60 years old in 2024, Generation x is 1965-1980, Millenials or Generation Y is 1981-1996, Zoomers or Generation Z is 1997-2012, And Generation Alpha 2010-2025. 2001 was when Generation Glass became a thing, cell phones could go on the internet. & that's when Gen Y zombied out, & forgot about Gen x, Many Zoomers became so glued to their smart phones, like brain dead zombies. They think anyone older than them are Boomers. :D
