The only thing I have against the Enterprise G is that it stole the spotlight from the Titan's legacy, they should have either refitted the F into the Yorktown refit or built another Constitution III class.

I agree. It's weird, Starfleet follows a lot of naval traditions. But historically, renaming a ship was seen as bad luck. I'm guessing 23rd/24th century humans feel they have "evolved" beyond fear of that superstition.

In the TNG era, the Enterprise has always been the flagship and was always a cutting edge, most technologically-advanced ship... D was a Galaxy class, E was Sovereign class, and F was Odyssey/Yorktown class. It seems like a radical departure and a step back to make the next Enterprise the "Neo-Constitution" class. Also, why not just keep the Titan name? The decision to rename the Titan-A the Enterprise-F seemed poorly thought out.

They were always called the flagship, but were almost never seen carrying an Admiral which is typical of a flagship. Always made me think the title was more ceremonial because of the history behind the name, and not because they carried a fleet Admiral.

Jesus Christ did it seem shoehorned and I guess fuck the legacy of all the crew that sacrificed themselves under the Titan A. There was no reason that Seven couldn't have been the captain and the bulk of the Titan A crew transferred with her. But nope. Weird rename of a mid level ship.

I feel like renaming the Titan-A to the Enterprise-G diminishes the legacies of both the Titan and the Enterprise. The Titan earned its right to have a legacy, but they took it away. @@backtoearth1983 Egh? What? Excelsior was always a medium size ship. It is just long and thin, with unusual 1/3 proportion. Neo-Conie has 1/2, what make it way larger then excelsior. In Trek ships of same length, can have radically different sizes. For example Galaxy has proportions 2/3 and on top of that wider saucer. So it was massive! I don't hate this class but it feels like such a regression, both technologically and aesthetically, and it seemed to me uncessary to decomission the Luna class when there's STILL Excelsior's flying around- but to take away The Titan's legacy and rename it Enterprise feels like such a huge error, and deeply disrespectful considering how rare legacy registries were in this era. The Neo-Con feels like a HUGE step down from the Oddysey for a legacy flagship, ESPECIALLY when the F was being decomissioned EARLY. As an ending, it left a very sour taste in my mouth.

They’re essentially missing the whole point of Star Trek. It’s no longer about exploration or trekking or becoming better.. It’s about referring to themselves as. D**s**ts. It’s generally unwatchable and won’t be remembered in five years. Time was where someone would guest star on an episode and you could still remember their name 30 years later.. But now, people that you see on the shows multiple episodes don’t even leave an impression. Besides Laforge’s daughter, name any other bridge member on the Titan

I can‘t bring myself to think the Neo-Constitution class as as a mark 3 (or block 3) of the original Constitution class. In my opinion that would imply that the Neo-Constitution is a modified version of the original class, which I doubt. There has been too much of a history with designing new classes from scratch to implement new technologies and changes in doctrine in late TNG-era to believe Starfleet would bother to keep updating a design that they hadn‘t been using prominently for many decades. I prefer to think of the term „Neo-Constitution“-Class as a nod to famous design from the past, or maybe it started out as a nickname due to the visual similarity that eventually stuck abd became official.

One of the continual issues the Picard series had was that no one on the writing staff knows what "refit" means. The called the Sagan-class Stargazer a refit...of what? The Constellation-class version is in the Fleet Museum. Did they take NCC-1777 for the frame of the Titan-A? That would make it a refit, I suppose, but they'd have had to upscale it quite a bit. In my perfect world, they would have just fixed up and recommissioned the Enterprise-D and turned her loose again. ^__^

It's a slap in the face to the Titan and it's Legacy to have them rename it Enterprise. The Building of an Enterprise shouldn't be a simple matter of ok we'll just take this ship and rename it Enterprise. Even if that's what they did to The Yorktown and Renamed it The Enterprise A (not 100% sure in that) it is still different in that The Yorktown was in Space dock undergoing a major redesign. Even so I would rather them just build a new ship than rename an old ship Enterprise. And yeah... Frightfully bad luck.
@jbirdzz

Even the type of ship doesn’t match the entire point and usage of the Enterprise. The enterprise whether people like it or not was repeatedly shown, stated, and made into the flagship of the federation. She is the ship every enemy wants to get their hands on, and is the ship who takes command of all other vessels in a serious situation. Hell the F and her lineage were the centerpiece of frontier day. Downgrading the enterprise to lesser ship then the F, while throwing away the Titan-A was probably one of the dumbest in and out of universe decisions I’ve even seen.
@capledbetter
@capledbetter Жыл бұрын
What gets to me so much about the "let's move past our militaristic phase of Starfleet" with the deliberate callback to the Connie is that the show already had a ship that could absolutely fill this vacuum: it's called the Sagan-class. While the Sagan's design is incredibly striking and a wonderful update to both the original U.S.S. Stargazer and the ship seen in STO, it's smaller and more exploratory like the Connie III instead of having the sheer scale and power of the Oddysey-class. Instead of being the all-arounder that engages in large conflicts and being provocative in its presence like the Enterprise-F would likely be, the new Stargazer could fill that niche of being the ship that does a lot of the first contact work that exemplifies the primary values of the Federation. The Odyssey can be the poster child for all the innovations and beauty that the UFP champions, but the smaller and more subtle yet gorgeous Sagan-class could be out on the frontier to hearken back to their exploratory roots while not being as pompous as the Galaxy, Sovereign, or Odyssey. Even the naming convention of pushing out to the unknown and reaching others across the cosmos is exemplified by naming the ship after Carl Sagan. It's all right there and the in-universe explanation can make just as much if not more sense for the Sagan-class (as long as it doesn't become the new flagship because that still doesn't make sense no matter which way you slice it). But instead, we get a new Enterprise that - with all due respect to those who love it - feels like a mishmash of ideas and other better ships in a way that sidelines the Stargazer, the original Luna-class Titan, and of course the Enterprise-F. But hey, at least they didn't use the Sagan in S3 so I have this idea all to myself in STO 😁

The design of the Constitution III class makes quite a lot of sense in that advances in technology made the more massive Excelsior class, Galaxy Class, and Sovereign class ships no longer practical, as those classes were designed to take on threats like The Borg and The Dominion. This forced Starfleet to go back to the classic Constitution class design, which has greater mission flexibility and adaptability.

the phaser strips could be classed as it's primary weapons system for heavy hitting, while the phaser turrets are for point defense against small agile ships which seem more common in that era or shooting down incoming torpedoes and making the ship looking less of a combat vessel but still well armed
@irregularassassin6380
@irregularassassin6380 Жыл бұрын
I'd probably reverse that assessment. Iirc, phaser strips are comprised of lots of little emitter things working together, which means smaller moving parts (if there even are any moving parts). The turrets, meanwhile, would have to move their much larger mass for each new target. Plus, strips were designed to increase the arcs of fire a ship could achieve, as the beam could originate from any point along their length. I'd instead make the turrets as powerful as possible for use as the main phaser armament, and use the strips to cover awkward angles and point-defence with their (presumably higher) speed of acquisition and greater firing arc.

What ship was single handedly battling the entire star fleet during the Borg incursion?" asks a young ensign...who was probably a Borg during this event. 2. "Oh, almost immediately afterward, Star Fleet re-named it Enterprise-G." 1. "But...why? Most people won't know that this ship is really the fierce Titan-A!" 2. It's *NOT* though, that's the thing. The 560 meter figure is one thrown out after the fact to try and make it more palatable when the details carried from the constitution linage are *very* specific in sizing that saucer to exactly the same size as a constitution refit's saucer. The saucer rim windows are of a design of a known size, and positioned at the exact same positions they would be on a constitution sized ship, the bridge dome is the *exact* size that a slightly bigger bridge would be on a constitution sized ship, the phaser banks are the right size to match a constitution sized ship, the windows are either grossly oversized and floor to ceiling (which we know they're not from internal shots) or the ship is constitution sized. Then we've got details on the underside of the saucer, like the array of windows on the underside which are common to that style of saucer that we have an exact reference to the size and shape of (which again, would be wildly out of size and shape if she's 560 meters), sheer deck counting from the rows of windows, and a myriad of other cues. One can just look at an Excelsior to actually see what a ship that is actually in the 500 meter range should look like because that was actually designed with that proportionate size in mind, and the details are scaled appropriately to convey that. Then compare how that ship looks to how an original constitution refit looks and how the neo-constitution looks. It's the exact same level of bald-faced lying to our faces as trying to claim the SNW constitution will somehow shrink into the TOS connie. That's not how it works.

RE: Rebooting the Constitution-class; Full disclosure, I did not watch Picard S03 and have no plans to do so. With that being said, I'm also underwhelmed by the Concept of trying to gin up more Sentimentality for that series (In Total) by suggesting that a return to form from 200 years prior to the events of the Picard series represents growth or development. Sure, the Federation and Starfleet both are also capable of being sentimental, and there's much by way of canonical material to prove it. But it's a Ship of Theseus thing, pal. The Federation and Starfleet both have been replacing their *own* planks for such a long time, even completely disregarding them when they identify and remove something which has become rotten by virtue of proximity to something else which started out rotten. The result is that those planks which *must needs be present* are no longer there, and thus it is no longer the Ship of Theseus, even if we squint a little. The Ship of Theseus that is Star Trek floats upon a sea of Disbelief, which keeps it suspended. They've managed to drain that ocean of goodwill.

Unless this is a really long-lived class, like the Excelsior, this will cause problems for the writers in keeping the Enterprise-J as a mid-26th-century ship, as Daniels showed Archer in Enterprise. If the Enterprise-G is around at the turn of the 25th century, then it and the Ent-H and Ent-I have to last an average of 50 years each in order to keep things consistent with Star Trek Enterprise's glimpse of the 26th century.

A question for everyone (followed by me droning on with my 2 cents): would you have accepted it if the film makers of Star Trek IV had used this, or something similar, for the Enterprise-A? It is completely understandable that the film makers of Star Trek IV would have used the Constitution-II model for the Enterprise-A; it very likely helped the long-time fans get past the loss of the Enterprise in STIII; it certainly did for me. However, that created a new set of issues, since the previous movies heavily suggested that the Constitution-II was no longer cutting edge, yet the Enterprise-A appeared to be a new ship, apparently built using a soon-to-be-outdated design. Personally, when I first saw the Titan-A, it seemed to be a Constitution-class ship with Excelsior-class technology (and whatever those warp nacelles were), and THAT seemed like a perfect fit for the end of Star Trek IV. IMO, the fans would likely have been perfectly happy with a new Enterprise that wasn't a clone of the previous, so long as the registry was NCC-1701-A, and so long as it was mostly Constitution-esque. If we want to come up with some lore to explain a Constitution-III, it actually makes much more sense in that era. The Excelsior NX-2000 seemed to have two purposes: First, to be a platform for Transwarp Drive (which might be a franchise game-breaker if Starfleet could simply go anywhere instantly, without drawbacks) and second, to incorporate multiple new technologies. Therefore, Excelsior had a completely new hull. Still, that left Starfleet with all of those Constitution-class hulls. IMO, a Constitution-III makes sense as a rebuild of the older ships; dispense with the requirement for Transwarp Drive, retrofit as much Excelsior-level technology as the smaller hulls can hold, and Starfleet becomes much more formidable in a short time. In principle, the same shipyards and facilities used for then-existing Constitution-class ships would readily adapt. Or... I'm wrong. What do you think? EDIT: I have to admit, I do love the massive Impulse Engines.

What do you think of the theory that the Neo-Connie is an original Shangri-La chassis with Luna guts? As in, because of the loss of Utopia Planitia (meaning no/few truly "new" ships being built) and the Luna Titan presumably taking too much battle damage under Riker to be reasonably repaired, they took everything salvageable from it and retrofitted it all into a mothballed chassis they had laying around? One thing I hear a lot of fans complain about is its size. I often hear that a new Enterprise should be "bigger" or as big as the Enterprise D, but dimension wise the Constitution III is just a bit smaller than the Sovereign Class' size roughly. The Enterprise D was as big as it was because it was meant to incorporate families and be a sort of city in space (the next time they attempt this seems to be the Enterprise J, which more recent models of show to be a literal city in space so its huge size makes sense.). Since the E and G and I think the F (I haven't played the online game.) are a return to purely Starfleet personnel crews, the ships have no need to be as big. Like, I get it, people like hero ships to be big and impressive but it makes perfect sense for following ships to be smaller. I do get one gripe though, which is that the windows look like they'd be positively huge, since as mentioned the Connie III is about on par with a Sovereign size wise yet its windows look like they're meant for the smaller Connie II ships, obviously in order to visually invoke the latter's iconic image. Otherwise though I do generally like the shape of the Connie III, and even think it makes sense in the context of its time. Starfleet is still recovering from the loss of its primary Starship construction yards, and on top of everything now recovering from the disaster that occured at the end of Picard S3. It's probably a time of conservative use of material and resources and Starship design I could see reflecting that for a time. I know people like bigger and more advanced but it does in universe make sense why Starfleet might want to scale it back a bit as they literally rebuild their fleet and replenish resource. The idea of them wanting to invoke the image of a famous time in their history does make sense too since this is a time where Starfleet is "healing" from a really rough time between the Borg, the Dominion, synthetics, and now the Borg's last attempt at Earth. Maybe they want to turn back towards an aesthetic and focus on defense and scientific endeavor as opposed to the increasingly sharp edges, combat focus, and perhaps high resource cost focus of ships up to "now". The whole thing with the Titan being "upgraded" to an Enterprise is kind of weird though no matter how you put it, they could have easily just hand waved it as a brand new Constitution III vessel, maybe upgraded to appease the Starship power level fans. 🤣

Thematically it continues the thesis of bring back TOS era ships and leaving the Dominion War behind. It is a bit on the nose though.

i think its cool to have moved back to using beam banks to have more hardpoints in tighter spots that are harder to knock offline and still having phaser strips. the combo makes more sense and its not like phasers are the most destructive energy weapon to keep using in the 25th century.

I'm not gonna lie... The neo-constitution is a sexy ship! 😊 But, my love for those Romulan war-birds will NEVER diminish!

I love everything about this ship except the Enterprise-G thing. Its a great ship, its maybe the best looking ship to come out of star trek in a long time. It also being the one of the two ships that saved the federation has an emotional argument to make an exception and name it enterprise. I still just feel like in an era where the Odyssey exists this is too small and undergunned to carry the name Enterprise.

One of my favorite ship designs tbh. But I am with the masses here. Did not like them renaming it the Enterprise.

Renaming the Titan to Enterprise was too much fanfare, but at this point it is what it is. As for the ship's aesthetics...it's a decent enough design, although the proportions are off. It looks like the saucer is too large for the secondary hull. The sharp edges of the saucer look at odds with the curved lines of the secondary hull. Also, the stepped design of the nacelles toward the rear make them too thin.

They should’ve named this ship the USS Jean Luc Picard. That was the original plan for the show.Starfleet would not be stepping backwards in lineage and design, and Enteprises have always been cutting edge, state of the art ships.

The biggest disrespect to that fictional crew, and the fans is renaming her the enterprise G.. The season was generally terrible, and very mindless.. And then to just take away, everything that ship accomplished the entire season by renaming her is repulsive.. They couldn’t build a new ship and call her the enterprise? And they couldn’t even respect the ship by letting her keep the name titan.

i'm goingf to break with the majority opinion here. i love this class, it's the best looking new ship since.... hell, the sovereign and i think the fact that it is recommissioned from the Titan honors the titan's legacy. captains Savic, Riker and Shaw should be proud.

Well taking all into consideration, it's rather symbolic, we began with Enterprise Constitution-class and ended with one, that's the mark of the new beginning I hope for Trek-world, to get back to all we know and love, to watch and see exploring the final frontier and the voyages of a starship Enterprise, it's continuing mission to explore strange new worlds to seek out new life and civilisations and boldly go, where no one have gone before ( I want to see more then our new Enterprise, but I really wanted to use that line)... also Seven is a captain of an Enterprise, from borg drone, to the captain of Federation flagship (not sure if G is one, but you get it)

I have to say, Season 3 was the first Star Trek I have really enjoyed since the 3rd and 4th Seasons of Enterprise. They really did a bang-up job. I hope to see a new series with Seven of Nine and Raffi on the Enterprise-G. They managed to redeem all the characters and made me feel hopeful and adventurous by the end. With that tone, they will do better than even Strange New Worlds.

You know ironically it makes a whole lot of sense that they re use parts from decommissioned ships. NASA actually does the same with its computer cores because they can more reliably combat errors from space radiation, because they know how often the errors occurred in its previous flights. And can chose reliable computers who have smaller error rates then the rest.

I always liked the STO explanation that, hey, they had the historical designs.....so they just stuffed them full of 2400's tech and cranked them out for nostalgia factor. So you have Starfleet rolling around in Constitutions and Mirandas and NX-classes....that don't die the second a 2405 pirate looks at them.

The only salvagable aspect of naming a starship class "neo-constitution" is that it suggests at some point in the history according to Star Trek, America will adopt a new, better constitution.

It's an absolutely beautiful ship and I can see it having a place in official lore. The only issue is it never, ever, should have been renamed the Enterprise G. If they wanted to make a brand new ship of this same model and call it the G, that's fine. But don't take a well established ship like the Titan and rename it the Enterprise. The Enterprise is the flagship of the fleet and should always be either a freshly built ship or a "refit" of the current Enterprise.

Would be better for them to stay with the Titan A for the ST: Legacy and make the enterprise F flying around in the background 🤣

'very high impulse speeds'...surely this would be detrimental due to time dilation as you get to significant percentages closer to C (speed of light), it would end up jumping days/months into the relative future everytime it did so
