Personally, I adore the symmetry: Sisko: - Survives a harrowing conflict (in his case, Wolf 359) - Designs a combat ship to protect the Federation - Goes on to captain the prototype of said combat ship - Serves with distinction protecting the Federation from the next great threat (again, in his case, the Dominion) And in the middle of all that, he gives Nog an opportunity to prove that he has something to offer Starfleet - and in the end Nog proves it in spades by following in Sisko's footsteps!

Chimera has always been one of my favorite STO ships. I used it often in game back in the day and it felt like a natural outgrowth/combination of the Intrepid and Defiant, as well as being a sidestep from the Sovereign in some respects. I think it should be made cannon but only in very small numbers specifically for the reason that it was too maintenance and labor intensive to enter mass production. If you ever watch it use the Dynamic Tactical System in game (plus the numerous impulse exhausts), you can see why it would be incredibly difficult to create more than a few of them. It's like Death Blossom from The Last Starfighter but way more involved from an engineering perspective.

The ship use in star trek renegade
@EnderMalcolm4 күн бұрын
Actually, having a "Death Blossom" attack in ST would be pretty silly. The ship would require powerful inertial dampers, but could be armed with just a couple phaser strips and one extra beefy phase cannon or similar. When it enters that mode, it goes absolute apeshit on anything around it, but will need quite the overhaul as it doesn't stop until there are no more enemies, a potential oversight which may cause it to overload systems and blow apart some pretty important stuff.

STO is still my preferred continuity for Star Trek sequels, and what they did with characters like Nog is part of that. The gradual change of Starfleet into a more distinctly militaristic role - and the struggles the organization faces post-Iconian War in trying to get back to exploration - is also kinda what I expect a post-DS9 Star Trek would've been like, if _Voyager_ hadn't been set half a galaxy away, and _Enterprise_ set 200 years earlier. I don't love the _Chimera_ design but it has grown on me a little, thanks to Nog and to its relatively unique use in the setting. It's there with the _Avenger_ class Battlecruiser as a 'sign of the times' with their shift to dedicated warships with elaborate, variable hull geometrics, rather ugly but grim-faced and serious aesthetics, and emphasis on power in a compact package. The _Chimera_ especially is something that Starfleet would build basically just because it could; the most ridiculously advanced and complex do-it-all warship imaginable, compared to the slightly more reserved _Avenger._

Everyone knows that Starfleet's first consideration is to explore the galaxy, and then the universe. To that end, sensors of many calibers are needed. Hasn't anyone ever considered that maybe Federation starships should come with a "black box" which records everything that a ship's sensors picks up for later study by scientists and/or officers? Even a battleship, such as the one above, can have a part to play into space exploration with it's own black box.

I will forever roll my eyes at the idea that Star Fleet is not in any way a military organization. That is a primary plotpoint of TNG, where they were enjoying a golden age, and got a arrogant view on themselves. It took Q showing Picard the Borg, and Wolf 359 to knock Star Fleet some sense.
@3Rayfire4 күн бұрын
And I will forever roll my eyes when someone says that they got arrogant instead of it being the natural function of reallocating resources in a time of peace. Starfleet was never the organization that went out there looking to pick fights and always made it a point to not be aggressive. They didn't disarm their ships or mothball Starfleet.

@@3Rayfire I don't think we have to fully choose one explanation or the other. Why the Regenerative Shields were such a BIG THING is such: Originally shields could not regenerate. To borrow terms from ST: O you had a certain Shield Hit Point capacity, lets say for this example 1,500. When damaged by say a Disruptor Beam it would take 100 points off the 1,500 so now it's 1,400. Now what you can do, and is done in the show, is REINFORCE the shield either from diverting power from other system or some other method. This makes the disruptor beam do -80 or -60 points of Shield damage instead of the -100. So the remaining shield takes less damage. Starfleet before this time DID NOT have the science/engineering knowhow to make Regenerative Shields. Shielding systems needed to be taken offline and reset to gain the full amount of 'Shield Capacity' But what you could not do is regain those lost Shield Hit Points MID combat. That's why when they first encountered the Borg, there Regenerative Shielding was such a massive shock. Regenerative shielding is THE Holy Grail of Shield systems, shields that can regain those 'Hit Points' during combat.
@Chokah5 күн бұрын
Right, even then the repair/restoring of the shields is massively hampered in combat situations, what with various systems and personnel being otherwise occupied.

Would it be possible to create a Chimera variant which would be more... Mass-producable, for lack of better word, if it didn't feature the dynamic tactical system? Or was the DTS simply too 'baked in' to the ship design to be seperatable? A light chimera variant, if you will. I would also like to note that the ship changing shape like that when the DTS is activated strongly brings to mind the extension of the 'neck', sort to speak, of the Ferengi D'Kora class. Maybe that is the Ferengi ingenuity and understanding of business that Nog brought to the table.

I love the dynamic nature of the variable assault thing and the aesthetic is gorgeous but it is a bit silly. Making the big cannons out of patented Oberth explodium and having their use drain all other systems makes no sense; if you can't armour the flimsy parts then you give them their own dedicated shielding or wait until you can make them less volatile, you also don't let them suck your ship dry either when fitting them with capacitors to build up a charge in is an obvious option.
