My only problem with this take is that it's not universal - You get certificates when the place you want to work for values them. That's it. One of the most successful artists I know works at a university. He does not have a secondary degree, he has a certificate for Unity. This allowed him to become a department head for a new tech initiative the uni was pouring millions into. He demonstrated that he could do the work necessary for a field that didn't exist yet by showing both his portfolio and proof that he has technical chops to tie the art in with all the fancy tools that would be at his disposal.

Not only in 3D , it applies everywhere... Online certifications are useless. You need projects or Experience. *Now here the Catch is* , No ONE is giving chances to freshers... No one wants to have interns and give them real life project training. But Companies will write ridiculous job descriptions asking for 4 years of Experience for a junior role. I Shiet you Not, Every Company wants that Golden egg shitting goose (as a slave) that will work ON THEIR command... And in 3D, VFX/Artistry field we also have to work Overtime for RUBBISH payment. _(Atleast here in India there's no gratitude for Artists or idk in general for anything)_

I really don't understand how this doesn't have more views and likes... wtf? As a 3D Art lead, more beginners really NEED to hear this. Here's the thing, Certificates ARE BS (kind of). When I interview new artists, I have never once asked the question "So, what college did you go to?" This isn't law or engineering, you don't need to have gone to acclaimed college do make artwork for movies, games, NFT's etc All of my interview questions revolve around two things: What is you're experience? And what is your portfolio? if you have no expirence, that's okay, because your portfolio is more important, anyway. You could have spent the last 20 years living under a rock for all I care. But if you can model, texture, UV Map, Light, and composite: Congratulations, I'll give you a job! Colleges are really good at pumping out underprepared students with unfinished portfolios, and high expectations, which is really unhealthy, and extremely unhelpful to everyone.

your words... are more than logical. “It is a law.” I am from Iraq. One of the Iraq's companies "children's magazine" was looking for 2d artist... many graduates of art universities applied for the job but no one was accepted .... "because they don't know how to draw" but when I came, I didn't have anything except my sketchbook, some drawings on the my laptop, and some 3D designs. ...surprisingly, I was accepted and now I work as a 2d artist in the company the best thing about it is that I am a chemical engineering student... now I don’t know anything about chemical engineering... and I am very bad at it. maybe I will succeed and get a degree in it... but I am sure that I am not qualified to be called a chemical engineer... but I am very confident that I am qualified as an artist or designer :)

i really like this extreme honesty, even your choice of words, aggressive and true, no bullshit. and i totally agree with you guys, as a video game studio owner i had to hire some people, and first thing i tell them, show me your work, not your BS uni degree or course certificate.

I've been using Maya since around 2004 but now learning Blender and loving it so much. Thanks to you guys for making my transition a success. The learning curve is not as steep as I thought. Regarding certificate or degree, well most companies require a bachelor's degree or an equivalent work experience. Even if you've a killer portfolio it might not satisfy the employer. Having a degree is a plus in most cases. More like you're making yourself a step ahead from someone with just a certificate or somebody without any certification. It's a total BS how the system works. Art directors understand what's needed but not HR or the agency you're applying thru. Competition is so fierce in this biz and to stand out from the rest not only you should have a good portfolio but also show a proof of some sort of training. More than anything you should network. word of mouth. advertise/post your stuff. stay in touch with classmates( they say it's not what you know but who your friends know.)

Certificate is asked on countries who does not rely on the work you do, but rather, who are more interested in the etiquette (or maybe label?) you bring with you. This is the common problem which comes with elitism, especially on developing countries. You might be a fresh engineer from the school and you might know actually close to nothing and have no experience at all, but no problem as long as you have your "Certificate" you can "claim" that you can do the job. The question if you can really do the job or not isn't relevant. I had to fight my way trough this bullshit every time so I know very much why people constantly ask some certificates. Funny story, some big companies in my country doesn't even look at your resume if you don't show some certificates or diplomas. It's base elitism, and people are afraid more to lose their positions to actually show some work. Because you can show your skills with real work but certificates and diplomas are nothing than empty words that you were able to follow some instructions and do what is told to you. Things like 'Problem solving', 'ingenuity', 'creativity' etc. are not topic here. Because most people at leading positions (especially in 3rd world countries) are just diploma bashers, or byproduct of cronyism.

Certificates may have been valid when they were difficult to get, but not now.. and even less for this kind of activity. I took your free course by the way, and learned a lot about how to do some awesome shapes in blender with just a few tools (and addons). Thank you guys for all the work you have done for us.

I totally agree with you, my friend. Certified is useless, but believe it or not the company I'm working for always requires certification every year, and I am also improving my skills to get out of this place as soon as possible. Best wishes.

This is sort of the same thing in programming. If you have a good portfolio you wont need any certificates(like CompTIA). I didn't have any and I got a job as a Software Enginneer. I know people who have certificates and are still looking for a job. Truth is recruiters don't give a shit about certificates. They prefer demonstrable experience 99% of the time.

I have a B.S. in Biology and still needed additional certification to advance my career. Meanwhile, participation trophy employees were climbing the ladder. The most incompetent people were running the show. Certificates are a modern day scam.

This is proably the first time ever I disagree with you guys :) Look, most of your points are absolutely valid, but I think, you're missing an important one. And that's, because you're the leaders in the industry, you simply don't have a problem a lot of your students have. A certificate shows, you're investing in you and you take it serious. If I hire a 3d artist and have the choice between a dozen super people with great portfolios - but one has a couple of certificates per year of great mentors/coaches like you, I would chose that person, because he/she invests in her growing and learning. Especially in your highly specialised courses, e.g. the Trim Sheet. If I need an artist for a job with trim sheets and she comes a long with a cert of your course, I'd hire her, because I know what she went through. The other reason ppl love certificates is that they have is to make a post on social media. Again, you have the popularity, you don't need the buzz anymore. But others still on the way to make themselves a name do. So, whilst all you say IS true, there is a reason so many ppl ask you for a cert. Because it really helps then on their way. Why not help them, when they ask for help?
@ColinTCS
@ColinTCS Жыл бұрын
I think because, as they say, there's actually zero proof the person has even done the course, or done it to any decent level. You can purchase a course, wait a while then say, "give me a certificate" without actually ever opening the software. When you think of the number of "do my work for me" posts on 3D pages, it's no stretch to think you can't even guarantee that any posts showing a result are from the originator. So for me, yeah 3D certificates for any online stuff are redundant. If you are in an actual classroom doing the work, it would have more meaning.
