This is one color I must have in every brand, because it’s pretty different in each brand. In my part of the world, it’s the sky color 9 months of the year. My fave is WN red shade though. And I just got the Schmincke Azure, which is lovely. But I probably use Da Vinci the most, it doesn’t granulate much in the sky.

My all time favorite is the Cerulean Blue From Winsor&Newton

I love Winsor & Newton Cerulean PB35, it's got gorgeous granulation but it leans too green for PNW skies so the DS Cerulean Blue Chromium PB36 is my cerulean workhorse. The DS CBC is very clean and also great in mixes so I use it a lot. For those who like the color but less granulation, the M Graham is low granulating, it's a bit flat for me but I know it works for some artists. Thanks for sharing your swatches!

The Schmincke PB35 is simply amazing! I haven’t tried it yet in a painting, but swatching it is just so beautiful! Schmincke’s PB36 is probably more useful, though, in mixes because it has a higher tinting strength (not that it’s highly tinting).

Schmincke PB35 is amazing, I added it to my palette around four years ago and use it almost in every painting. I love its redder shade. The greener ones, and PB36 just doesn’t fit my mixing needs.

I was surprised to realize how many versions of this color I have, since I don't consider it a particular favorite, but I guess I was trying to find 'the best one." The favorite PB 35 that I actually own is Holbein, but I swatched the Sennelier from Oto's dotcard, and it's so beautiful! I like M. Graham's unusual Cerulean Blue Deep PB 36, it's darker and lower chroma, I haven't seen another like it.

One of my absolute favorite hues. There's almost nothing better than a cerulean sky. :) PB35 masterrace.

I have both Danial Smith colors and I find such different uses for them. The natural cerulean is a very interesting mixing color or using it to be the soft part of a mixed background. The chromium I have and find less use for

I use both PB 35 and PB 36 of Daniel Smith. Got the problem of extreme binder separation with the latter tube.

Cerulean Blue - how can anyone paint a summer sky without this glorious blue? Add a touch of French Ultramarine or Cobalt Blue and you're on to a winner! I'm not convinced with the Cerulean Blue Chromium though, I'm just using it up to be honest.

It depends of wich sky are you talking about, here in the southest state of Brazil the cerulean blue pb35 is the winter sky and the ultramarine is oursumer sky

I have Daniel Smith’s Pb36 but I usually forget to use it. It’s a pretty color and I feel like I should love it, but I find that I don’t really reach for it for some reason.

Where I live, in the east of Germany, I find that our summer sky is best matched by a very diluted greenish shade of Ultramarine. But this being said, I am not a realistic landscape artist by any means. My strong point is in another area entirely, so who knows how wrong I may be with this observation. 😅

I have Cerulean Blue and Cerulean Blue Chromium from at least three brands, because I thought you had to have it when I first started painting, it comes in a lot of watercolor sets, and I wanted to try Jane Blundell's famous mixing set. But I don't love it. I love Manganese Blue. I'd much rather use that. It's a super granulator though, so I'm not sorry to have it as a mixing color.

I think these are all beautiful! I currently own the one by White Nights, the Horadam PB36, and the Winsor and Newton. I also own another version by White Nights that is based on PB35 and is highly granulating but comparatively weak and somewhat dull in color. I like them all!

Based on these swatches I'd say the PB35s look like they'd be good for easy delicate summer/tropical skies but probably not much else, while the PB36s look like they could be used for more things and mixes. The only cerulean blue in watercolour I've tried so far myself is from a very cheap set with no pigment information, and it is so hard to get rid of it - for a while I was using it to practice washes just to try using it up, and there is still so much of it left in my palette. That might be better if it wasn't so chalky. A bit tired of cerulean blue by now, but if I was to get a good quality one I think I would consider the PB36 now.

I have a love hate with pb35.....I love having a light blue on my pallette but its strength just never seems to work how i want. I have DS pb36 and i do like it more but wish it was a lighter blue like the pb35. So im still looking for my perfect "baby blue" watercolor....? Single pigment is nice but dont mind a multiple pigment paint if it just works

I started my Cerulean journey with A. Gallo Cerulean hue (which is PB15:3), and I love that one. I've tried working with both PB35 and PB36, and they just don't feel right to me.

Thats not a real cerulean blue pigment.... That is phthalo blue (green shade).... theres other 2 variants which is pb15(phthalo blue yellow shade) and pb 15:6(red shade)..... So it means that you like phthalo blues🙂
@jennw6809
@jennw6809 Жыл бұрын
That's more accurately called phthalo blue green shade, which isn't a great "hue" since it's non granulating, but of course it's all up to your taste. A. Gallo doesn't use cobalt pigments since they're not the most earth-friendly.

To each their own, and there's nothing wrong with your thought process, but I'm just sharing mine and you're free to do with it as you please. The way I interpret your sentence, it feels to me like you're completely missing the point of that pigment. It doesn't "feel" right probably because of the value range. A PB15 will cover almost the entire value spectrum unlike PB35. Often times, that pigment can feel gloopy or weird to work with, but that's the charm, like an acquired taste. I highly recommend giving it another go. I could never substitute a PB35 with a PB15 / PB15:PW pigment, now that completely feels wrong to me. Either way, there isn't any real objectivity here, the tools serve the artist.

Great video! I also consider Cerulean Blue to be an overrated pigment, at least in watercolor; when you can exploit its opacity in oil and gouache it is, IMO, quite good. My DS Cerulean Blue is one of only two DS paints I'm truly dissatisfied with. The difficulty you had rewetting it is the same if you squeeze some from the tube and let it dry; it's also annoyingly weak. When I need a granulating, cool blue, my QoR Cerulean Blue Chromium is my go-to, though you have to account for that weird binder QoR uses.

The PB 35 of white nights is quite similar to the Windsor and Newton, it's quite blue-gray

White nights also has a pb35 ceruleum blue which is the same hue as the w&n but a little more saturated. Honestly white nights does well with their cobalts. I had DS pb36 on my palette, but rarely used it. I prefer manganese blue for sky color, but I like a lot of granulation.

I own DS PB35 and PB36 and both of your swatches look very weak compared to mine. I would guess 50% weaker than my swatches just in the mass tones.

He's swatching from a dotcard, and DS's low tinting strength colors don't rewet very well. I don't doubt your swatches are better, since you presumably have a tube, but I'm not impressed with DS's versions of these colors. You can see in Oto Kano's video DS is clearly the weakest of the bunch!

I'm not a fan of Cerulean Blue either. Winsor and Newton do another Cerulean Blue (Red Shade) which is also PB35 and slightly less green leaning. If that's what anyone is looking for.
