The PJ790V has several improvements over the PJ760V. One of the biggest is the built-in microphone. The new elevated top-mounted 5.1 channel surround sound microphone is independent and isolated from the camcorder. An included windscreen can be put over the microphone, which according to Sony will reduce wind noise by 90% when outdoors. The built-in projector now has over 50% higher resolution (pixels) , and almost double the brightness. You can now project content from your tablet.

The video was shot with a Canon T3i and most of the sound recorded with an external DAT recorder with lavalier mic. The problem is that this was like trying to record a review at a rock concert in front of the speakers. There was a stage nearby and lots of external noise. Not sure anything could cut out the background noise in that environment as the speakers were circular all around.

According to the manual the V version is NTSC with USB Input/Output, whereas the VE version is PAL and USB is Output only. Both has GPS

PJ790 is $1599 retail. But upcoming Sony CX430V will be in your price range, and have Balanced Optical Steadyshot.

The Sony booth, where this video was shot was very noisy as they had a stage and loud presentations right near the booth. So, although most of the audio is clear, there are times when the presenter is drowned out by the ambient noise.

Well, you don't need them plugged into the camera at the same time. You have either a mic on the camera and a light on a shooting grip or a mounting bracket.

Beautiful camcorder worth every penny. Definitely looking forward to getting one. I love the features so far, the dual format is nice for web based or more theater home TV. The balanced optical steady shot is a great innovation, and I love the isolated 5.1 microphone, that should give razor clear audio. Overall, it's an impressive, albeit expensive piece of technology. But very innovative.

Sony did make an adapter for the Multi-shoe interface that plugs in and can use Active Shoe interface accessories. As for the NXCAM, no, I don't think it has the same projecting feature of the PJ90. I looked up the features on that, and it doesn't appear to. I know I want the PJ790, it's a clear cut above other camcorder models, even some of the advanced and pro models. So far I've heard nothing but praise on this camcorder, it'll definitely be on top for years to come

Not quite sure how it's an improvement over the 760. The only real difference seems to be the project video input, which doesn't seem that useful.

I don't figure. I saw this video which was posted a little more than a year ago. I bought one of these this past July and I love it yes. But do I understand that now, Sony has discontinued this model already? I look on the main web site and it says so. They have also apparently done the same with other camcorders. Why would they discontinue camcorders with great ratings(consumer and professional reviews alike). What are they thinking. I hope the one that replaces this one is just as good. I hope nothing happens to this. good grief.

Got one, love it, I've been using it now for around 6 months. If you want to see how it preforms in the real world, take a look at my Channel, I used it to shoot most of my more recent videos along with GoPro Hero 2, Hero 3+ Black Edition and earlier Sony Camcorders....Tim.
