Reminds me of when I was an apprentice electrician for an electrical construction company years ago. Anytime there wasn't enough work for everybody, the boss would send the extra guys to work on his house. He wanted to be able to pay everyone for full time, even when business was slow. He was a good guy. His house was big, but by no means a mansion. Maybe 3,500 - 5,000 square feet. I think he spent a lot of time just thinking up shit for us to do to his house. He had 3 big electrical panels, plus a backup panel for his backup generator. He built a shed in the backyard with a 200 Amp service panel in it (200A service is what most new single family homes have here in the US). The shed had an overhead garage door. His front hallway had a chandelier with a motor to lower it to the ground for cleaning. The attic had lights and power receptacles throughout the whole thing. He had ethernet and HDMI cables going to each room. Speaker systems throughout the house. Camera system. He had outdoor storage sheds with water-tight lighting and power receptacles. Outdoor ground lights going along paths around the whole house. Undercabinet lighting everywhere. Intercom systems. Central vacuum. It was insane.

Exactly. If you are just throwing up a projector on a room(or outside) temporarily then all those features help get you a decent picture quick but for a dedicated theater room it would serve you well to do the math and find the correct spot. Ideally you want to never use the keystone adjustment options and a minimal amount of zoom to zero in the picture to the screen It’s also not just pixel loss or brightness loss. Just be ready for the brightness to drop, and the colour to change over time. We've got Epson laser projectors at work, and it's quite noticeable - especially if you've got a new one next to it to compare to.
@ryankramer2 жыл бұрын
Which models? And what kind of usage? And is it running at max brightness? Something isn't right if they're newer. You should be getting 10-15 thousand hours with maybe a 20-25% brightness drop. It's then supposed to drop off more quickly as it hits 20,000 hours. Something like 50% brightness at that point.
@keithduthie2 жыл бұрын
Fairly heavy use, probably not at max brightness (but I won't guarantee someone didn't set it up stupidly), and it's most noticeable with the oldest ones we have (probably EB-L1755UNL, unless those ones are an older model). It's mostly annoying because we have a pair side by side in a couple of rooms, which means that you can't necessarily just replace _one_ if it has a fault. Especially with the colour shifting over time.
@eoseregon2 жыл бұрын
Big difference between models though, although both laser with 3LCD there is a big difference in brightness (15000 vs 2700 lm) and application. Plus the L1755 has mad Color calibration functions built-in with camera assistance.

This new Epson really is pretty groundbreaking, the tech is fancy and has been around in the higher end enthusiast and commercial space for a while now, but the price point is where it shines. This is the first projector of its class, that truly encompasses everything (aside from 3D and tonemapping support, which is a shame on the latter but not a deal breaker) at a price point that challenges not only other projectors, specifically laser projectors and the ultra high end of the remaining lamp projector lineups, but also the elevated premium lineup of TVs. Projectors are never going to overtake TVs purely because it's an enthusiast product, you have to put a lot more time, effort and research into a projector comparative to a relatively simple TV market (it's not simple, but for the majority of consumers and premium purchasers, it's greatly simplified by what's on the shelf and what looks best at the time, unfortunately a lot of consumers just don't put much research into their purchases). But this might be the start of at least somewhat of an increased shift, or perhaps just a consolidation, of the existing Projector Market to better serve consumers. The downsides of a projector are starting the thin out, the primary reasons consumers don't buy into them is a mixture of complexity and price, Projectors today compared to 10 years ago on both fronts have greatly improved. Will be interesting to see where the market is in the next 10 years, especially as more of these market leading features become commonplace at genuinely affordable* prices (affordable for the enthusiast market, ofc these projectors will never be at a price point where the typical $500 TV purchaser will have use of them, there's just not a large enough economy of scale in the projector market to make that happen).

This is great, I've actually already been planning on upgrading my old Panasonic PT-AE4000 to the Epson LS12000. My third bulb is on its last hours now so I figure it's time to replace the whole projector. I've done some (not very serious) math to justify the cost and just buying new bulbs for 20000 hours would set me back like $2000. That would of course only work if I use it for the whole 20000 hours, which would be about 20 years at my current pace. Guess I'll have to get more liberal using it.

At one time I was planning a media room with projector and everything. I had something like $10K set aside for it, and yet I never pulled the trigger. At the time it seemed that nothing was happening in the projector scene. Nothing new, nothing better was being released for years. It was just another spin at the same old thing again and again. Each time just a little better. And they kept saying "Just wait till you see our new Laser projector!". Problem was the years passed and those laser projectors never materialized. Oh sure they were showing prototypes, but they were never released. Then after years of waiting laser projectors finally became available. Or at least one or two models. And I just didn't want to deal with first generation problems so I passed on those. And waited, and waited, and... The next laser projector came from a Chinese company that never had done a video projector before, didn't have distribution outside China and only had menus in Chinese. Pass. So when the good projectors started to appear I took a look again and realized I didn't want to deal with the hassle of setting up a projector and a sound system anymore. So that saved me probably at least $10K and I don't have to dedicate a room to be a home theatre that would be used maybe a few times a month as I no longer watch all that many movies...

It's all relative, and all based on what you want out of it. For $4500 less you can get into a halfway decent DLP projector, but that means 1000:1 contrast and 1080p, and it's DLP, so no lens shift, no powered zoom/shift, and a good chance you will see rainbows every time there is action on the screen. For ~$3k you can get into a 6050, which solves most of the issues of a DLP by switching to LCD and is a fantastic budget projector, but still e-shift (2x) 1080p, lamp based, and not HDMI2.1. For $7k you can get a native 4k projector with the same calibrated brightness (but lamp and not laser) that has more than double the contrast and built in frame by frame tone mapping, so all HDR content looks good without any expensive processors, and has all the other features the Epson has (HDMI 2.1, 120hz 4k, etc), but it isn't laser and it is $2k more. Keep in mind, you don't get anywhere NEAR 2.5 million to 1 contrast with this or any projector, I'm surprised this channel would even suggest grossly exaggerated numbers like that. The contrast of the Epson LCD's is GREAT, in comparison to any DLP projector, but compared to Sony or JVC, the Epson blacks look gray. All that said, for $5k, this laser LCD based projector is a pretty amazing deal. To put it into perspective, the previous Epson laser from a few years ago with almost half the calibrated light output was twice as much MSRP, and a step up from that would have been a $35k JVC. Today you have the JVC NZ7 at $10k that is native 4k with 2x e-shift to get to "8k", with all the same features but adding significantly better contrast and more light output by quite a bit as well as a major leap forward in HDR tone mapping (critical for HDR on a projector), or the NZ8 at $15k with even more light, even better contrast, and 4x e-shift on the 4k panel, giving you the same pixel count as true 8k (albeit with overlapping pixels like all e-shift projectors). Both JVC's are better in every single way except price, but as with all high end products, only marginally when casually viewing. Of course, this is no different than the difference between a cheap LCD flat panel TV, a decent LED flat panel TV, a quantum dot LED TV, and an OLED TV. Each is marginally better than the last, mostly in terms of contrast. It's all about what you are willing to spend to get "the best". Keep in mind, in the world of projectors, this is still the middle of the pack. There's the JVC NZ9 at $25k that just has a better lens than the NZ8. Then there's the Sony 385 at somewhere in the $75k range, brighter but less contrast than the JVC's, so more of a great projector if you have a big screen. And then if you REALLY want to up your budget, spend $150k+ on a Christie Eclipse. The thing is, until you hit that $150k price point, there will STILL be deficiencies in each of these projectors. It takes money to put a really high quality image on a screen bigger than 90 inches. If you want a GOOD image and to stay under $1k, just get a decent flat screen LED TV, otherwise hold on to your wallet, it gets expensive, and even more so if you want bigger than 130" and to still have good HDR.

As a former painter I wonder what Linus would think about using one of those ultra black paints like vantablack, musoublack or black 3.0 to paint the walls in the room. Or does that kind of black mess with your head when you paint a room with it.
