Cesar Millan Hits Scared Dog For "Training"

In this video, we take a closer look at some aspects of Cesar Millan's dog training techniques that have sparked controversy and raised ethical concerns.
Firstly, we discuss the practice of pushing dogs beyond their limits too quickly. By not recognizing a dog's tolerance threshold and rushing them into situations they may not be psychologically prepared for, there's a risk of adverse consequences. This approach can be particularly dangerous for anxious, fearful, and aggressive dogs.
Next, we address the issue of harsh corrections. While corrections are a standard part of training, excessive physical corrections can potentially do more harm than good, especially when dealing with dogs exhibiting fear or aggression.
Join me in this critical analysis as we explore potential drawbacks in Cesar Millan's training approach and advocate for a more thoughtful and humane perspective on dog training methods.

Poor dog. There is this other trainer called Victoria Stilwell from the show It's Me Or The Dog, I recommend checking her out, it's always the owners that need training instead of the dogs haha

@@ashebennett7726 Uh yes she does! That is the recommendation of most pseudo dog trainers who can't help the ones that need help. The other trainer who is equally responsible for euthanizations has the initials ZG. New dog owners turn to them because of their view count and after trying what they were told was supposed to work, they get rid of the dog and usually go buy another one! The overcrowding of shelters is the leading reason of dogs being euthanized and the main reason is "untrained". CM turned the industry upside down when he showed how to transform any dogs behaviour by using calm non-judgmental energy. His profound understanding of how dogs relate to one another is why his methods work. The fact that this guy is against a unique sound to redirect, and that he rewards barking with treats, shows he knows nothing about dogs (or the basics of positive reinforcement training). But the biggest problem with his advice is that he said he can address this fear without putting the dog in a fearful situation. Avoidance (aka "management" in the 100% FF camp) is not a training method and it reduces the possibility of a dog having a full life.

Came on this video curious, would want to know about concerning things, but from watching a ton of Ceasar's videos, I think what he's trying to do is to show the dog how to properly respond. He presents the various stimuli, the final catalyst being the camera, and does the "cchhh" thing to help get the brain out of a fearful state, which is the same when he taps the dog. Similar to cold ice, or something intense getting our minds out of a wired state. Based on the videos I've seen, the dogs seem to eventually calm down and allow Cesar to interact with them closely and other involved individuals. They don't seem confused, as a state of "shut down" would imply. They'd still be hesitant or at least acting odd afterwards if they were "shut down". Thoughts? Your smelling suggestion is very interesting! I will definitely try it out!

I have an easier way to phrase my question: Why do you calling it "shut down" rather than "calm". What tells you this? Genuinely interested to see if I'm not seeing something.

@@magdalenaterlecka3984 He has to word it that way fro clicks and shock value. Its just the typical way that wannabe influencers use big names to get clicks. Even a negative dialogue in the comment section helps traction. His title literally says CM "hits" the dog. That's like saying if someone taps you on the shoulder you got punched in the face. The defamer in the video talks using human analogy, including the dogs internal dialogue. Then he gives an alternative method which rewards the dog for barking. Positive reinforcement is part of every dog trainers (including CM) but using it to make a dark bark is reinforcing guess what?

Would it not be better to have a bag of treats by the door and have guests give one to the dog when they come in? I'm not a dog trainer though so that's a guess.

Sounds logical but you cant condition a new calm emotional response while in lizard brain and what if it barked first just before you gave the treat? Then you just taught it to bark more. Even if its a treat they want, they will just attack right after swallowing it, or 5 minutes later when they see the threat still there. If the behaviour of bark-bite-chase away has worked for them 1000 times, then you will need way more reps of the new behaviour before it replaces the old one. Most people are far too lazy to put in the time and quantity of repetitions needed. And even if they take on the task, they are usually too dumb to know that it is equally important to stop all repetitions of the unwanted behaviour while conditioning the new one. "Sometimes is anytime", meaning if you let it happen sometimes it will happen always and forever. Dogs excel with sharp senses and complex emotions but as for logic and intellect, it is the same as a toddler for their entire life. (Just my 2 cents worth)

I suggest inviting a football team to the party, that room is not small enough to calm down a distressed dog with barely 4 to 5 people and some other dogs around. Alternatively, switch to the bathroom. That said, Millan had a bad reputation among responsible and caring dog owners in civilized countries long before KZbin became a thing and opened the doors to any kind of immense sh*t, starting with harlequins with oversized sunglasses and ending with pseudo-trainers encouraging the use of e- and prong collars (illegal in many said civilized countries, btw) on puppies (!) rather than showing how to socialize them well in the first place. Then you look at their audience and understand. P.S. To the ones getting now in hyperventilation mode about my words: if you wish, I can explain it to you in the exact same way by using good old child education methods and tools. I guarantee you'll understand and agree in no time.
@dp5965
@dp5965 3 ай бұрын
In your P.S., what are you suggesting you will explain? How CM is using the highly effective positive operant conditioning? Or how this 'trainer' suggests using the 2 less effective quadrants: negative reinforcement and negative punishment? Or that this 'trainer' is actually rewarding an unwanted behaviour with positive reinforcement? Please elaborate.

OMG! How you feel about watching Cesar is the way I feel watching YOU! when a client sends me one of your videos. SO brightdag guy what is the problem with having a shutdown dog as they transition!? from reactive to non-reactive. I would say you agreed with Cesar! How can anyone take you seriously IF you say flooding is BAD but then say flooding is good! I saved this video so when I do my video I can show ridiculous you sound. haha

@chrisr-m6568 Bro, chill. The problem with "shutting down" a dog as you try to transition them from reactive to non-reactive is that you risk traumatizing the dog, and can also backfire horrendously if attempted by inexperienced trainers or (more alarmingly) dog owners. It's a very risky technique, and it's so corrosive for the dog's mental health that I'd argue it shouldn't be done if other, more humane training methods are available. I think if you look at Alex's comments in context, it's not hard to tell that he never approves or endorses Millan's use of flooding. He's saying that indeed, flooding can appear to yield quick results, and it's very dramatic, and that's all the entertainment industry cares about; but that in the greater scheme of things, it's a pretty awful thing to do.

@@chrisr-m6568 Personally, I think that a person's competence is a completely separate thing from how many views he has. I really appreciate the value of Alex's content -- he's the kind of person who understands that you don't need to traumatize, abuse, or hurt dogs in order to train them. That's what I love about him, and it's a quality I wish all trainers and dog owners had. You can be both firm and humane with a dog at the same time. :)

@@chrisr-m6568 I respectfully disagree. Alex's commentary is intelligent, insightful, provides a lot of value, and gets a conversation going about dog training practices that can be problematic, even if such practices are espoused by big names in the dog-training scene. I get that you disapprove of certain ways of creating content, and I respect that, even if I don't share your tastes; yet, the fact remains that his videos are very helpful for those of us who do appreciate and enjoy the way he does things. Anyway -- I'm not setting out to change your mind; I simply wanted to clarify some aspects of the video that you seemed to be misinterpreting in your original comment. I hope my replies were useful to some extent; I'm not really interested in pursuing this topic with you any further. Be well, friend, and God bless you.

Still waiting to see you deal with an aggressive dog on camera and fix it. You sit behind you camera and talk theories and bash other people for your own gain. Putting his touches in the same categories as abuse is disgusting and you should be ashamed.

@sainttheresa9704 Not a hit by human standards, perhaps; technically it's a poke (using finger instead of whole hand). But to the dog it's more or less equivalent: it is terrified, tries to defend itself, and as a result gets a shot of aggression and fear.
