Oh yeah, the Mountjoy match. Very underrated this one. Higgins was magical throughout this whole championship. RIP to both players.

Alex Higgins was a tremendous player , he went for lunatic shots and got them . He was, also great at positional play and escaping from snookers , and a master at using side on the cue ball . He was ,in fact a skilled Billiards player .

Great upload! And that bonus to close the vid - best three shots ever to win a frame?
@stephenr86154 жыл бұрын
A tremendous potter is Alex Higgins. He takes on the craziest angles and low percentage shots and consistently makes them. But how many times are these the result of his below average positional play? Time and time again in these clips he fails to get the white where it needs to be to facilitate the next shot. I actually find it hard to watch at times.
@michaelpower43723 жыл бұрын
Dont watch. Alex never worried about the white Ball because he could pot from any were.

The pot on the green at 17.26 was magical and knowing if he missed it he could lose the match. You wouldnt see that pot in todays game. And the way he potted the blue to then move the pink over the middle pocket at the end bonus there was brilliant, in those days only a few players could do that pot. But the green pot maybe just 2 other players could have did that then and thats jimmy white and steve davis? But he would rarely go for it.

@markdrinkwater15082 жыл бұрын
They are exactly the same size match pockets as used today.
@alanmctavish480210 ай бұрын
@mark.. In the 1970s the pockets looked smaller but alex still made it look easy. And the balls were heavier and the cloth made the game slower, apart from alex. I saw him play in 1975 against spencer i think and alex was potting long reds hard and against the cushions. It was as if he was playing in 1982. The crowd would go "wow" at first to me it seemend strange but then i rememberd the people had never seen these pots before. And it seemend the venues were alot smaller too, i just saw the 2 rows mainly, but i didnt even know how many rows there were. When they opend the crucible at sheffield you could see it was alot bigger and alot of rows, the top row could hardly see the table.
@johnwedgbury68174 жыл бұрын
i love snooker as much as anyone. and i understand you can only be great in, or the best of your era, but the standard back here compared to now was diabolical really. greatest of respect to alex, and all the pros then, but it wasn't great.
@paleshelter40023 жыл бұрын
the equipment today and conditions, including table cloth, are much easier to adapt to Also the coaching and technique are almost robotic
@squirrelpatrick36703 жыл бұрын
Never mind the table cloth, have you tried playing snooker drinking the amount of alcohol those guys did? The new kids had it easy.
@markdrinkwater15082 жыл бұрын
That's not true, Higgins and Mountjoy would be able to compete in today's game, especially Higgins. There was nothing he could not do on a snooker table, players like Higgjns, Reardon and Spencer were more talented than most of today's players and when on form would be able to beat today's players.
@stephengodsmark4353 Жыл бұрын
a tad over rated for me Higgins. very astute player. but as a cubist and Potter not all that really. 2 time winner is very good. exceptional even. but outs him.mid pack which is bout right.
