Look at that back 5 or 3/2.. then Gascoigne, Lineker. The spine of that team was impressive and players like Beardsley and Robson available. Graham Taylor inherited a good squad.
@Dead-Ball-Situation6 ай бұрын
He did but injuries to Barnes and Gazza meant they didn't go to Euro 92. That was bad enough but Taylor made it worse for himself by dropping Waddle, Beardsley and i think Robson (unless he retired?). Parker too. But the real problem for Taylor was that all these players were getting older and post 1992, there were no good players coming through that would replace them and with Gazza constantly in and out of the headlines and never fully recovering from injury, it was almost inevitable that England would screw up qualifying for the World Cup in 94.

Look how good Gazza was and how much he loved winning. Whats also telling is the buzz around England still, Polands respect for England having seen them reach SF of W Cup 3 months earlier (wanting to change shirts and never looked like competing), yet 12 months later, England were hanging on to 1-1 draw in Poland to just about knock Ireland out. How 12 months changed everything. Gradual decline. By 93, England didnt get to the W Cup. This clip was the last game of Englands best post 66 era. Only Euro 96 came close to it.
@lucasm38796 жыл бұрын
Gazza was a total mess after his injury in '91. It's ridiculous seeing how fat he was when he came back for the '94 qualifying campaign in the documentary. He should have been dropped until he lost the weight. That wasn't the only problem, but he was let himself and his country down thinking he could play in that shape. I think not playing in Europe's club competitions until '91 really affected English football in this period. Everything was too long ball throughout Taylor's reign, and I don't think it was only his fault (although obviously he played a big part in it). I think the players just weren't tactically or technically good enough because they weren't playing European football regularly.
@kailashpatel17065 жыл бұрын
Agree but I have to say that England's playing style under Bobby Robson could have been so much more cutting edge with a better tactical shape. Waddle, Barnes, Linkeker, Robson and Gascoigne not to mention Beardsley...I wonder why that was not the case..?

I do wonder whether it was injuries to key players or Taylor's mismanagement that saw England's general decline from 1990. He lost Gazza and Barnes before the 1992 tournament due to injury. But he dropped Waddle and Beardsley then brought in Carlton Palmer. I think those factors were key to their decline because their replacements were below par.

Woods in for Shilton and Dixon in at right back for Stevens certainly didnt weaken the semi-final team. Taylor's biggest problem was ending Waddles England career early. Waddle was in the form of his life. Axing Beardsley was also a crime. And to be fair, although i didnt rate Taylor, he was very unlucky with injuries to Gascoigne and Barnes.
@lucasm38796 жыл бұрын
Yeah those two injuries affected the team's chances, I think the whole style of football wasn't good enough though. I think the clubs not playing in Europe set English football back, I know they did well in '90 but that was a one off. '88 they were poor. In '96 the clubs were playing in Europe again, which I think helped the style of football, plus Venables was a more tactically astute manager
