I remember the time I got Best in Show. I thought the judge forgot my BEW sound hearing Grand Champion Persian & so I kept saying audibly, "you forgot one; you forgot one"! She turned to me & said, "No I did not". Another Persian breeder turned to me saying, "Oh my God, your getting Best in Show"! I was so stunned I had to send my husband up to shake hands with the judge & thank him.

Thankfully this show was 1 show instead of the usual 2 (Purple & Red) which allowed me more time to concentrate on cats/kittens instead of rings (back to 2 shows for the next one). Thus I've got quite a bit more shorthair video, including finals.

Persians do show up a lot in CFA finals. CFA generally has more Persian entries than other breeds so it's a bit of a proportional thing though I did see somewhat more diversity in the 2017 finals. TICA has far fewer Persians at shows (least that's been my experience) and so have fewer in finals.

I’m baffled that the CFA International Cat Show, after 27 years, has yet to be televised even ONCE.

It did appear on a national network, at least once. When the show was held in San Mateo in 2005 it was intended to be a media event, with all sorts of high tech stuff like digitized communication panels, mic'ed judges and a high production finale (least for a cat show) which was eventually shown on The Game Channel (if I remember correctly) which wasn't exactly the ideal content format for a cat show. I'd just thought at that show that it'd be kinda fun to photo the show - with a still camera (a rather unimpressive still camera, at that time). Did that for the following shows 'till I realized video would be more interesting for me, so I've done vid for a number of shows, but not that one. When this International show was held in Atlanta in 2008/2009 (don't remember which show) CNN was there with a vid team and they shot a LOT of video - but they didn't know what to do with it 😄

@Emma Rose I don't think cat shows have enough action to interest TV other than the usual "There's a cat show" news nibbles. Dogs, on the other hand, provide some riveting action with their agility contests and even for the more static walk arounds (whatever they're called) that are at least movement, whereas cats is "herding cats" 🐈🐈 🐈 🐈‍⬛🐈 🤠

Usually cats go to shows when they're still kittens, and can go to quite a few, too - so most do become conditioned to the general bustle of a show. Earliest entry age is 4 months for CFA (and, I think, most registries) though I believe "for sale" kittens can enter a show hall at 3 months (could be wrong, been a long time since I inquired). Also, these cats are bred to be amenable to handling, though one does see the occasional surprise.

Conformation Dog Shows are the most similar - minus handlers and pretty much anything other than wearing a tiara. Obedience Training !?! Disobedience (training?) would be a more suitable contest for cats... They can do Agility - though I find their distractions in doing that more entertaining than actually running the course - so yes, very different from the amazing athletics of dog Agility.

Oh, they are. I concentrate on Persians and Zots and record other longhairs while looking for them. This leaves the shorthairs kinda short for me - but if I do see an interesting cat I will stop to vid them. Luck of what I see as I'm wandering around. There are longhair folds too, but they're judged in the shorthair section, just as Zots are judged in longhairs. I am seeing a lot of Devons scheduled for the 2017 International so I'll make an effort to vid some of them. Maybe I'll get lucky and vid some Burmillas too. Hopefully also some Folds. Should be easier to do with 1 show instead of two (Red/Purple) and so fewer cats. Kitten class is always huge, though. Overall, I'm seeing 123 Persians & Zots - so that will keep me busy.

Yes, it's as you say - with some extras. Think of every cat being called Fluffy... so which Fluffy is which? Cat associations/registries define the parameters for naming, with a character length limit so a cat's name isn't a complete family tree... The usual convention is the originating cattery name (where the cat was born) then some sort of individual name, like say Fluffy, and if the cat's moved to a different cattery there's often a suffix which is that cattery name. Kittens often don't have the prefixes/suffixes 'cause the breeder/exhibitor's not sure they'll be appearing at another cat show, kitten showing is a sorta test run for a show career - they may not be suited one way or another, and officially registering a cat by name does cost some money.

Show cats have generally been bred for amenable personalities, and usually half the cats in a show are kittens. I have seen some blow ups at shows where a cat was not so amenable to handling... and often see battle scars on judge's hands and arms.

How did they train their cat to be calm with many people like that?

Generally it's part of the breed characteristics, though quite a range in personalities between say, Cornish Rex & Persians. Providing a calm stable environment helps, too. Also some/many exhibitors do try to acclimate their show cats by introducing them to more people than their immediate human family, and taking them to shows usually helps too, as the cats get kinda familiar with what to expect.

Yes, all of the above 😉 Usually the cattery name is first (referred to as the prefix) and any "of" denotes a cattery the cat/kitten has moved to (the suffix). The name(s) between those two are the specifc cat's name - though in reality a cat gets a call/familiar/regular name that's often different from their official name. This system then allows for multiple/many Fluffies: Hogwart's Fluffy, Dior's Fluffy, etc.

Compared to the regular part of the show, with the large public crowd, this was generally much quieter - and I edit out a substantial amount of the ambient noise, so it's actually louder in person. Most cats are ok with it, some, not so much.

Can be water, can be (I believe) approved cleaners. I think the main purpose is an attempt to remove scent traces left by the previous cat/kitten as other cat's scents can set some cats off.

Most registries use some sort of point system. Here's a link to CFA's Persian breed standard, points listed at the start: www.cfa.org/Portals/0/documents/breeds/standards/persian.pdf Using this system, as well as comparing same breed cats, they can compare say, Persians to Siamese, to see which particular cats best represent their breed standard. Of course this allows for subjective opinion, thus a flashy cat tends to attract more positive attention. That's how judges assess individual cats in class judging. Ranking cats at a show and thus awarding show points is something different, whereby points are awarded based on the number of competitors for a specific cat. And again, different associations/registries do things differently. FIFe shows are quite differently from CFA shows.
