So sad to hear of the death of this multi-talented author. "My Beloved Monster" is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. Much more than just a "cat book." Love his look in this video, like he just stepped through a time tunnel from 1890s New York.

I bought a copy of The Angel of Darkness back in 1999, simply because I liked the cover. I'd never heard of The Alienist and there was no indication that my book was a sequel to anything else, so I read it and was completely floored by how brilliant it was. So while you should never judge a book by its cover, sometimes, a good cover is justified.

You should have read the alienist after. I read the alienist and loved it. The angel of darkness was good too but the alienist had such a background to it. It was such a wonderful read.

Man that's funny because that's how I came across the book but it was in my mum's collection, the cover caught my eye when I was looking for something to read. Had no clue what the fck it was but that picture of that guy in the coat and top hat waiting for a carriage was kind of freaky to my teenage head that I had to give it a read.

@@ireneswackyjournals8810 I read it after but I didn't find it as good, still think Angel of darkness is the better of the 2.

His father was a violent alcoholic

His father was a violent drunk who liked to throw his middle son Caleb down flights of stairs. As a result of the trauma he endured in childhood Caleb Carr suffered severe, painful health problems throughout his life. He father was no "nice guy!"
@gwenniegirl504 ай бұрын
The abuse inflicted upon Caleb Carr, by his “nice guy” father resulted in injuries that went (medically) unchecked. It was later established that these entries resulted in health problems, such as a “bad back“ due to the trauma. Also, Caleb Carr suffered with digestive tract issues most of his life. It was eventually established that his pancreatitis was a result of traumatic injury related to child abuse. The cause of his death was pancreatic cancer. Caleb Carr states all of this in his last book, “Masha, My Beloved Monster…”.
