I just ordered your book. Thank you, Mr. Carr, for finishing this before you got the chance to join your beloved Masha in what comes after. I, too, believe that I will join the five cats I've had the privilege of sharing my home with at some point. It may be soon, it may be off in the distance a bit, but my family and my pets will all see each other again. Bless You, Mr. Carr.

I'm glad Jeff Glor incorporates his passion for literature in his reporting. This piece on Caleb Carr reminds me of the one he did on James Ellroy. Both authors suffered trauma at a young age and that informed their work. It makes me hope their art relieved some of their suffering.

An amazing story. I'm writing this with a Tabby named Shabby on my lap. She's my ever present monster, who keeps me grounded. I get it, Caleb.

I loved the Alienist and stayed up all night reading it when it first came out. I didn't know about the Masha book, but I bought it yesterday and just finished reading it. Wonderfully written and so loving. I cried as I finished it. I hope Caleb and Masha are tripping the light fantastic somewhere, their health and youth replenished.

In the process of reading his book ( My beloved Monster), last night as I was reading how he was suffering after surgery, and Masha was by his side, I had a strange and unsettling feeling about Calib Carr! I only found out today that he had passed away. I feel like I knew him personally, and his death has hit me hard!! I will hug my cat MARLEY with all the passion he will allow, and never waste a minute knowing my 20 year-old cat's life is also short! I only pray Calib Carr has been reunited with his beloved Masha!!

You don’t “break the chain/circle of abuse” by running away and becoming a hermit. That’s the coward’s way. That’s the lazy way. You “break the chain/circle” by having children (by adoption or biological means) and NOT abusing them. But, yeah, that way TAKES ACTUAL WORK. It takes “growth,” so I get that some people don’t put in the time because it’s “too hard.”

Who are you to judge his choices? Looks more like you are looking to give yourself a pat on the back. He had every right to choose a solitary existence.

Yeah, but also acknowledging that maybe you can't do that or just don't want to, for either the fear of repeating mistakes or just knowing you are unable due to all the problems you still carry is also breaking the circle.. having kids for the sake of proving something is not the big step you think it is

Too hard? Coward’s way? Lazy? Get off your pretentious high horse. People get to break the cycle of abuse in the way that works for them.

I'm surprised Lucien Carr was an abusive alcoholic. Of all the Beats he seemed the most normal.
