Just got out of hospital for POTS related escapades and your videos have provided no end of comfort. I am revisiting your sewing with a disability videos and using those steps on my everyday life as I'm also to Ill to Sew. First steps to accepting I'm disabled and you have helped me to get there. I have so much love in my heart for you and so many thanks for continuing to share your work in different ways xx

Honestly, Claude, THANK YOU for showing us costuming with affordable materials! I also cannot afford wool, and had completely written off the idea of trying any historical costuming because I just can't afford linen and wool. It just sometimes feels inaccessible unless you have hundreds of $$ (or pounds, I am in the US) to drop on fabric. Maybe I will rethink that decision though, after watching this video!
@RetroClaude
@RetroClaude 11 ай бұрын
There's such a focus on 'accuracy' but we can't get anywhere near the quality and variety of fabrics they could in the past! Just because something is an accurate fibre doesn't mean it was exactly the type of fabric they would have used. So use what you can afford, or have in stash and make something that looks the part and feels spectacular!

A suggestion from north of the border - check out Value Village on the regular. They have a fabric section, as well as the sheets and coverlets. I once found wool. Lots. And Lots. Of Wool. It is possible... But, given the restrictions, I try and find a fabric I like that seems to have the same degree of weight and drape of the "official" linen and wool. If you want to splurge, pick up a cotton lining for a small quilt - I use it to make shoulder pads and such. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

I have been binge watching the older videos. I love your videos because you are open and honest. I can relate to many issues you encounter. I don't have a huge yarn stash, but I do need to work up what I have that isn't project dedicated. As a result I'm knitting beanie hats for charity with yarn I had no idea what else to use for... So one old yarn project completed allows me to start a new yarn project, lol.

You know, it might not be period accurate but it looks great on you! And it's fun to see how much someone can accomplish with so little money and time just in comparison to all the perfectly-sewn-in-expensive-fabric projects around.

I watched this as I worked on an Edwardian walking skirt that I only had a week to make.We got a last minute invitation to a 1906 themed event. I thought my old Edwardian suit was going to fit and didn't bother to try it on until a couple of days ago. So I had to draft a pattern and sew a skirt. Of course, I over compensated and made it too big ( and long too! ).

this looks really good! I love the trims you used. seeing you take on a project like this is so inspiring, both from the use of almost entirely stash, the historical but not needing to be accurate perspective, and the sewing with disability. You are inspiring me to go digging through my stash and do some sewing at a pace my long covid can handle 😄💕

These compilations make a nice accompaniment to my knitting - I used to do the same with the individual videos. 😅 And it's nice to see how a project comes together. I liked your clever solutions for the dress when I saw it the first time, and I think I like it even more the second time around! The underarm issue is relatable. I made a self-drafted blouse somewhat like this from a vintage fabric that I had a limited amount of (so I feared cutting anything more complex out of it - much like this project, too), and I have the same problem there... I think underarm gussets are indeed the way to go.

Loved how the skirt turned out! I would love to see you attempt this style again with time on your side. I think you were really on to something with the reinforcement in the skirt without a corset. It looked lovely! I think the blouse did just need more gathers in the front to pull it forward, but this blouse just looked like a modern take! Wonderful!

It's so wonderful to watch this again. I hope the algorithm loves it and spreads the word about your awesome combination of historic, modern, achievable and accessible. Quick question: does playback speed affect how the algorithm behaves? I often watch on 1.25 as weirdly it helps my brain focus but don't want it to affect you. Thanks 😊 P.s. second question (I'm aware how annoying people suggesting careers is when it's your energy stopping you not your desire) Would you ever consider doing paid e consults to help people stuck with fit issues? A little like what you do for Engineering knits. Obviously at a price that would make it worth it and a shorter time.

I like this project and I think that the weights on that dress looks amazing. I understand some of the issues that you had with it as I recently seen another dress with more of the pigeon breast construction in the front but I think it overall looks really nice and I like the vibe - it’s soft and gentle looking and comfortable and not too much froufrou. The velvet and lace though are a pretty touch.
