This video is by far the one that touches me the most. I cry each time I watch it. I was raised alone by my widowed father and art was not something that was encouraged. I always feel like I missed out on discovering what feeds my soul. Still searching for it in my 30s... Thank you for this masterpiece.

At the beginning of the film, “Alike” a father and son stick out from society. The son is orange as the father is blue while everyone else in the town is a gloomy grey. As the son and father progressively fit into the norm of society they lose their distinct coloring and appear grey. The son realizes that society is losing its sense of creativity and he would have to eventually fit and perform and look, “Alike” to everyone else in the town. The father realizes his son slowly losing his creative touch and decides to step in to show his son that being distinct is okay. The father imitates a violin player who his son looked up to in order to restore his faith that creativity exists scarcely in society. The short film, “Alike” demonstrates that one can still be creative in modern society despite the monotony in society,

This is what it literally feels like when parents say.. "im doing this for you" or im doing this for your own good" or this is for your future etc. They dont realize that what they are doing isnt making their children happy and they always focus on whats in the future which is not bad at all tbh, but too much is not good, especially when their goal to "guide" us turns into controlling us. :(

Even such a simple concept, with simply designed characters, can speak volume. This audioless film can still have a long-lasting impact on me. the way the expressions and movements are animated, the cinematography, the scoring, everything is just well done. I also love the color schemes in this, they're integral to the story, and symbolize how the father and kid's love makes them stand out, among their whole town, a visual metaphor for difference. Especially the violinist and the tree (which are colorful), the message here is that, a small act, such as playing a violin under the tree, will eventually make a change in the monotonous environment, I even have reason to believe, that that day, the violinist purposely stayed home. because he wanted to see what would happen, in the scenario that the son has almost lost all of his shine, the dad comes to the rescue and does something which society doesn't seem to like, because, seeing his son in this colorless state pains him, makes him colorless too. He's doing this for his son's sake, which in turn makes him feel better. Really, I don't have any issue with this film, well done!

I like how the father has an orange tie similar color to his son. It’s like a symbolic meaning that the father has an inner child like his own son and he sees his childhood self in his son. Every time they hug it’s like healing to him, his father is dependent on his child to bring him that energy and inner calling of him but at the end of the video the father regained his own “color” by himself and it’s like he finally realizes the inner child that he always had is in him and he embraced that part of him that he always have had.🤍🤍amazing animation and I love the background music that goes with the video. Great color choices too!

A lot of short films have made me cry, but this one really hit home. I remember 6th grade is where it started. I hated not being able to do what I wanted to do. I loved to draw, write, and make my own worlds. I remember when my own father told me not to animate or draw anymore and it broke me. I kept going though. I pushed through. I made it to 8th grade. My grandfather had recently passed and I told my mother that I had been depressed for years. She asked what would help, and I told her that I wanted to go to an alternative school. She said that she would try and get me there, but my father was furious that I wanted freedom of expression. And now I sit, not doing any school work. I’m in high school now, and the teachers tried everything, especially incentives . I told them that it wouldn’t work. They gave up. All I go to school for now is to talk to people. I hate the school system. I really do. I wish that kids could just be on their own, like nature intended. I don’t want anymore kids to end up like me.

This is so profound. It transcends beyond the surface interpretation that “hey school destroys and discourages creativity and diversity”. The symbolic meaning is deeply touching. It is more than just school, it is also about socialization. For centuries we have allowed society to dictate how we should live and who we ought to be. We pass these “values” and “norms” to our kids, our friends and everyone whom we come in contact with and it is a stifling cycle. Here we have this burst of light, youthfulness and radiance in a toxic environment of adults and kids who are not passionate anymore; they have given up. At 3:59-4:00 he surrenders himself to these shackles and it is so heart-breaking. Luckily enough he gets his burst of orange back and this symbolizes hope. Children are such a gift to this earth because they see the world from an amazingly different perspective and sometimes we need to tap into that child who resides in us. We have the power to choose happiness and liberation. Let us reclaim our burst of orange and express ourselves however we choose to. Kudos to Daniel Martínez Lara and Rafa Cano Méndez who wrote and directed this beautiful short film.

Ty Smith American education is pretty good, you just never experienced any other. Here in US students can choose any class they want. There are few important classes that everyone must take. Seriously, how can some kid never take any math. Too many idiots in US already. Contrary, in Russia and I'm sure China, etc. school has only mandatory classes. Everyone go to same classes. In Russian elementary and middle school only class that you can choose is second language, English or German or French. Depends on school, some has no second language. Also one class is different for different genders. Girls learn how to cook, sew, whatever else. Boys learn how to use tools by making furniture (e.g. chairs, tables) and whatever else. The only flaw of school education in US, and very big one, is not hard enough classes (yeah, there are honor classes, etc. but only smart kids go there, not too gifted kids are not pushed to try harder enough) and geography must be one of core classes (American have no f*** idea where is what countries... smh)

***** no... the problem with school is that they only teach kids to pass tests. There is no financial education, or critical thinking classes. They are designed to pump out little obedient sheeple to follow athorety and how to pull levers. The only skills that they teach that are worth while are reading, writing, and basic math and it shouldn't take 12 years to learn this. Back in the day people where far better educated. Now a days you have to translate Shakespeare for them. Most high school kids graduate then blindly go to college because that's what society tells them to do. Then they graduate from that and end up working retail or some job like the one portrayed in this video just to pay off the enormous debt 30 years later. Then after they graduate they never even read another book. Know why? Because school has turned them off to reading and self education. It's trash and needs to be reformed.

Andrey Pavlov Let me put it this way. The American education system is not run by educators but rather by business men. Students are forced to be exactly like everyone else and are taught only to be employees. They aren't taught important life skills other than basics, they aren't taught in the way they learn (everyone reads from a book when people actually learn better in different ways like hearing, doing, or even seeing), and they aren't taught what interests them. You say a kid can choose their classes, but they can't. They can suggest classes like a language class or pe or something, but the school decides where the kid goes, usually in classes they need to graduate that grade rather than things they actually chose and like. When I was in middle school with my first chance to choose classes, I chose art classes and computer classes. All three years I was placed in pe when I only needed it for one year. The reason being that by the time they got to me "the classes were full." Come to find out, they didn't even have enough kids in the first place. There's a reason they give all the kids the same way to learn and the same tests and such. To weed out those who learn or do things differently for a higher chance of finding employees that can do as they're told and learn the same thing everyone else is. There is a reason they gradually take away recess. So you get used to not having breaks except to eat, like on most jobs such as retail, office, and even factory jobs. There's a reason that as you age, you are expected to turn in more complicated work with no drawings or creative means. You may think this is part of the learning, and to an extent it is. But creativity is frowned upon in these assignments. This is because it replicates paperwork, which must be done a specific way and must not have anything extra. All in all, the American school system was built to generate a mass amount of replaceable employees that can all do the same thing for the job force. If these things were changed, then we'd have a lot more people who enjoy their lives rather than regret them. We'd have a lot more creators and more sense of community because society would tell us to follow our passions not blindly follow the herd, being the herd together as people connect. We'd actually be higher on the educational scale! We're actually one of the lowest educational systems in the world. And what's more, we'd have more people that don't end up panicking or homeless or something because they weren't prepared for the real world, financially, mentally, emotionally, etc.

Super Fantastic Poplang I have no idea what you said, for one. None of that was a complete thought. Or sentence..... And if you're saying they can't write then one, you spelt write wrong (you used this right rather than the correct term, homophones dude). For two, they actually wrote quite well. Very well spoken. And for three, the alphabet wasn't necessary at all.

The colors are well thought and are explained by aura. Or that is what i believe. Blue means emotional intelligence which appears in the end when letting the kid be creative in the end. Orange (i see the kid's color looks orange) is about selfe confidence and courage. That explains why the kid want's to be different and wants to maintain creativity. Others are white. It is said that No one has completely pure white aura, which is quite well thought color in this animation, since creativity is part of a human being. :) Also in the end the new kid turns to pink which means longing for affection. The new dad takes the pink kid away from the orange kid which is not kind at all and explains the pink color. This animation is a master peace! I'm totally impressed! Definitely Need to show this.^____^

Despite the cheery music at the end, it's a sad ending. Red man moved on from the black and white town. Man and his boy will one day be absorbed into the society they want to avoid becoming part of. They don't fit in. They do have each other, but how long will that last when you're outcasts in the place you live. How long will they retain their life in a city of zombies.

This is my interpretation .The little boy was orange because he was "himself" different from all the other children who conformed to what society deems as normal (the other kids were white devoid of uniqueness). The little boy brought life to his father who hated his job and was drained of his own personality (turning white). The only thing that made the man happy was his son. That is why he would turn blue again when his son was around. The father did not want his son to be miserable like he was so he acted silly in front of his peers to prove to his son that being unique is ok. Be yourself and live life by nobody standards. Beautiful story guys ❤

I'm actually crying because I relate to this so much. I used to enjoy school but then I just got bored and sad. Eventually I started avoiding school. I would try to get sick so I'd have to stay home. I'd pretty much have a mental breakdown every morning, and sometimes I'd become nauseous because of the stress. I eventually just ran away from school, and I got put in a mental rehab hospital for a week. I don't regret it though. Now I'm homeschooled and I feel much better, but I'm still stressed AF.

As a student, I think it's true. Because every day is the same for these people. Nothing changes in them throughout their lives. The father is blue and son is orange. Other people are white because they don't feel emotions. At first, the boy wanted to go to school. He believed that everyone will do what they want and have a talent for. But it turned out to be the opposite. In my opinion, school takes away children's creativity and fills their heads with unnecessary things. The father knew that his son would soon lose interest in school, as well as in his work. That is why this movie is called "Alike".

Charming little film, showing the results of everyone being the same. Variety is the spice of life, a spice some forego and become 'normal.' No one but the boy paid any attention to the violin player. It wasn't until dad stood under that tree and mimed playing the violin that others paid attention.

People saying school takes imagination away from people, that's why schools have art and gym and music and choir. Subjects that teach math and reading don't have a choice but to be bland sometimes

Georgia 1011 ...all subjects have foundations that need to be learned in order to create something, but there's no reason math and writing cannot have creativity injected into those studies. Rather than only having math tests, students could apply the math skills to create certain projects. Just look at how Ferrari creatively applies math in designing their cars.

Georgia 1011 the 'creative' subjects ate not that much more creative, we are still given instructions and supposed to take it to the letter.. there is no creativity if we all do the same thing.

my art class doesnt let me do what i want they want everyone to do the same exact thing. many schools dont have music. gym? us people with disabilities cant even and doesnt have much to do with creativity. choir ?? assigns you to sing only the same thing you cant do what you want they assign you to do everything

Sad that work & school literally sucks the life out of us when we’re doing the wrong thing. I’ve been lucky enough to find the career I love that is made for me - it took a long time & starting all over multiple times, but when you find the career that feeds your soul, it’s amazing 💕
