Best use of CGI I've ever seen! Makes use of the stunning natural landscape, but creates imposing but realistic elements, to create a believable but breathtaking world. This is the future of CGI and I'm so excited.

+indiciaobscure They are doing this for almost 30 years now... Watch "True Lies", is one of the first movies who entroduced the "Real CGI". Cameron basically invented this.

The one glaring error in the effects that I've noticed is the shadowing on the dragons. When Dany is petting them, the shadow on her arms and stuff is usually pretty fake-looking. It's the one thing that's always jumped out at me. It's too bad, because the dragons themselves look great. I think they just need some more skilled compositors to get those shadows right.
@quakerbone

Me too. Almost all of the Others is costuming and prosthetics. The CGI was put in to make them look more other-worldly, like the glowing blue eyes and their sweat literally steaming off of them in the wind. You should be able to find the "before" makeup on winter-is-coming if you search "A closer look at special makeup and prosthetic design"

Such beautiful effects! Honestly most MOVIES don't match Game of Thrones in effects - for less than 10 mill an episode they leave us with an epic of the likes of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars in the sense of multitudes of otherworldly characters and locales! HD video sometime please! :)

Rendering of these sequences takes time,man. This is not just instant work.Much of the work comes after rendering. It takes a good compositing team to pull off those realistic scenes. 3D renders by themselves just wont do the trick. It's just part of the work.

It's very similar to the first time you pick up a piece of clay. You just figure out what you can do and just go from there! For organics (people, animals), I'd recommend a free program called Sculptris (while you are getting started) and for non-organics i'd reccomend polygon-modelling in Cinema 4D (which you can get for free if you are a student or a teacher) Have fun! :)

there are a few panning shots that use motion tracking, anouther simple process which takes no time atall... pyke... harrenhal and kings landing...all use motion tracking and minimal cgi, plus the shots are deliberately short but they give the right effect on screen! from what i could tell the explosion at the battle of black water would of taken the longest time to render... i saw shatters and other dynamic's used...
