The more I learn about Fela the more I love him and respect everything he stood for. I've been listening to his music for 25+ years and happy to say I still listen to Fela all the time. He's inspired so many musicians and bands here in the U.S. it's amazing. I can't begin to say or truly know what goes on in Nigeria but it's sad to hear that nothing's changed. Praise the Lord for Fela...I don't think there's any other musician who was as big a rebel and activist as Fela was!! No one!! I am happy to say that Afrobeat music is so popular here in America.. It's really beautiful to see. In fact.. tomorrow night here in NY they have one of the annual Felabration concerts going on. It's been happening for quite awhile and it's always a night that's all about his music and the bands play for hours. They do talk about Fela and what he stood for..but it's definitely more about the music and celebrating his incredible afrobeat music that he originated! He's one musician that I so wish I could have seen just once. I got into his music about 4 years before he died..I don't know or can't remember if he played here in the few years before he died ..but man there's not too many musicians I wish I could have seen more than Fela! I've seen Femi and Seun a bunch of times and they're both great.. especially seeing Seun play with Egypt 80. I'd have to say I like seeing Seun more since he plays more Afrobeat than Femi now. One of the best Afrobeat bands out there if anyone is interested is an amazing Afrobeat band called Antibalas!!! Check them out if you're not familiar with them. As well as a newer band called Danaya band.. they're led by Aboubacar Dembele the bassist in the band. Such great music!!! Peace and blessings to everyone and especially Nigeria! Fela fought off dictators. They retaliated. He never backed down. When you realize the weight of his lyrics, you ought to cry in pain. Thanks. My warm recognition to the three wise men. I emphatize with Fela over the loose of the woman, who gave him the shoulder to fly, his mum. Fela's Mothers influence over him, really helped his career and life. She, gave Fela all the supports, he needed to succeed on his beliefs. As, it is known with all Philosophers like my dad Baba Awolowo, Baba Abraham Adesanya, Baba Herbert Ogunde, Baba Fasoranti, OBJ, Malcom X, Bob Marley and many other Philosophers whom their words still retorates in our present world, he was highly controversial. He was a pure Pan Africanist. I appreciate Dede and several others, including Femi who has not allowed his legacy to die.

Flea loved Nigeria but like what happens to citizens of many countries Nigeria hurt him. We were a young nation, most populous with over 360 ethnic groups. Though all nice people we had not yet come to see each other as one. I remember when I was in London. My ex-boyfriend friend play FELA’s music. I fell In LUV immediately. When I returned to NYC, I purchased all of his CD’s. Sadly, not much changed in Nigeria. I know , because I have a friend that live in Nigeria. Also, I watch and read the Nigerian news. The narrator forgot to mention FELA was influenced by African American music.

Which African American music inspired him, please can you name them because prior to Afrobeat, the only music played in Nigeria was highlife by musicians like Ebenezer Obe, Sunny Ade, Oliver de Coke etc. If you even say his music was influence by Caribbean music I can agree but African American? No my dear, Fela founded Afrobeat, he studied classical music in London instead of medicine that he was supposed to study. When he returned to Nigeria he was playing jazz but his mum advised him to make the kind of music that people will love to hear so he travelled to Ghana where he did some research on highlife which originated from Ghana but he didn't like highlife so he started cooking up something of his own, yes he may have gotten inspiration here and there like maybe from jazz music played in America, but afrobeat was originally created by him and in all my years of listening to African American musicians, I'm yet to hear anything that sound like afrobeat, common! Peter went to visit Fela when he was in Nigeria, but was told that Fela was sleeping. The young man whom Peter met didn't know who Peter was; so he didn't make adequate effort to wake Fela. Peter would die shortly after this event. I really wished they had met; because they went through the same police brutality by the shitstem. Maybe they would have done a show together; a show that would have led to the revolt against the crime ministers who have continuously downpressed the people.
