Here in the deep southeast, they are called June Bugs. Also known as a Scarab beetle in Egypt and eeewww, a Dung Beetle worldwide. My son Jonah (29) and I have spent months bindging this entire channel in order & just today caught up to real time. It’s a sign I have my Chateau if not hear but in Heaven!! 💜🌈💜 Had empty my closet and husband too plaster out below where leaking.did the bucket thing and we had lots rain and downpours. I love praying against extreme weather and send Host of Heaven!! It really works!! Finally my husband had a sunny day and fix outside yesterday!! That bug - looks like a beetle. "The dogbane beetle of eastern North America is iridescent blue-green with a metallic copper, golden, or crimson shine. It is one of the most brightly coloured beetles in its family."

Love the roses, the fireplace ,and the hood. I bet if you had time to visit a great house in England you would find your china answer. The bug is Japanese beetle and will devour your roses ,check out how to kill. The side vents on fireplace were to help heat room. Good job on roof, might be a way to age the metal. Most important that the gutters all work right. God will provide answers for teaching in France all year. Good luck. Sometimes things are tough but he demands it to better ourselves.

That beetle you showed is a June Bug. They are harmless. We tied a string around one of their legs and let them fly around us when I was a kid. They are a beautiful beetle 🪲

I've been pondering since last week. Is it possible that the deeper platters are for displaying and serving "Île Flottante" on a dessert table? Cut the lavender right back to the ground in the late winter/ early spring it should come back. I do it every year like that and it blooms perfectly every year

Leslie! You are a kindred spirit! I adore footed cake plates. It's so satisfying to see china all clean and arranged in a cabinet with a door that closes to keep out the dust! The range hood is terrific! The fancy top is going to elevate the entire kitchen. I think Rob said you will probably put moldings between the ceiling and the tile walls, which ought to give that wall the final classy touch after your fancy new cabinets are done. That hatch into the depths is scary. I'd be tempted to get a heavy metal door with a recessed handle. I cut and save lavender and bay leaves too, and have a collection of small bottles and jars (I like the ones from German preserves, with pretty pictures of cherries, etc. on the metal lids). It really is amazing how much you have gotten done since the Chateau become yours.

There are phone apps that will identify bugs, and others that will identify plants, like the bay leaf variety. They're super handy and interesting when you're in a new place. As long as the bay leaves are dry, you can put more in a bottle. My sister cuts a small branch off her tree annually and hangs it to dry, then uses the leaves as needed.

China set was meant to be used for fancy multi-course dinner parties on Sundays and special occasions. Fruit and dessert pieces were considered as decorations for entire dinner so the host would arrange them neatly all over the table. They also changed every plate for every course and considering that formal dinner party had about 13 courses you needed 13 plates for every guest, these varied in sizes but this art of entertainment is long forgotten.

Once lavender goes woody it stays that way. Prune it back by a third, being careful to not cut too much into the wood. When you plant any new lavender plants you can stop the woodiness by pruning it way back. I don’t know why that info is in my head but thought I’d share. Greetings from Sherwood Oregon. Perhaps you could paint the flashing a color similar to the slate tiles or a patina'd copper color. It wouldn't stand out as much. I know Rustoleum makes a paint for use on metal roof parts so should hold up. . Anyway just an idea. The chateau looks amazing.;

Love the videos and all the hard work you do at the Chateau. Just be careful as the range hood will probably have to be made from fireproof materials and have an tube to the outside of the building. Since you are hosting students the kitchen will probably go under the legislation of "grande cuisine" when the power installed from all the kitchen appliances together is more then 20kw (gas + electric). If you need more info just let me know.

The bug might be a Japanese beetle, most beetles are bad because they like to eat leaves on plants. Great vlog! I will miss you guys! You sounded so torn on leaving the chateau . I think I would too.

I thought it might be a Japanese beetle as well. One thing they eat is roses, and they can multiply alarmingly fast. Definitely keep an eye on them, Leslie.

Just wait until the manufacturer's coating wears off of the valley material and paint the valleys to match the slate. In the past the valleys weren't unsightly because they were made from sheets of lead which was basically the same color as the slate after a year or so.

You know you're talkin about the metal channels on the roof for the guttering, I think it actually accents the dormers because if you look at the house from far away the three roof dormers are more noticeable. As they were, when you look at it from far away all the black blends together and you don't see those beautiful dorners standing out. Just my opinion......

Loved this video. When you look back on this year you'll be impressed at all of the progress. What a masterpiece the range hood will be. Your attention to detail will be worth it. I would have made the cut on the back of the cabinet. The bowled compotes were used by the Victorians for fruit that could be part of the centerpiece display and also used for serving as a dessert. Fruit was such an extravagance it would have been displayed prominently. I have a china armoire and love it. So easy to find things. Maybe the roofers have a finished roof that could show you how the gutter will patina. Seems very necessary. Thanks for taking the time to do the videos when you have so much to do.

Please double check that with the pharmacist, there are many plants that look like and can smell like edible plants but can be toxic. Those leaves look larger and thinner than bay leaves.

Japanese beetle. Can be destructive to birch, roses, rose of Sharon, etc. We drench the soil under those plants for a systemic deterrent. Check with the garden center about the proper chemical.

I spray them off my rose bushes with 1 teaspoon dawn dish soap per 1 gallon of water. That same mixture gets rid of aphids as well. Spray in late evening... never during direct sun.

Gutters are fine, you will slowly ignore them as they age and go more of a matte finish. You will notice them far more than visitors! Beetle: compare to golden tortoise bettle and see what it can affect. Looks the closest match from what I can tell.

They are not gutters they are valleys and they are zinc they will patina with age. Paint it with what though? and how much is that going to cost in materials and who is going to do it and pay for that?

That aluminum or whatever that strip is on the roof looks bad and you're not going to be happy every time you look up there. If I remember you paid $300,000 for that roof. Make them make it right. The same with covering that detail. That's not acceptable.

I'm... not a roofer... But isn't the flashing meant to go UNDER the tiles so that the water doesn't get trapped beneath it? I'm super confused about the way that looks. Maybe have them explain it to you. I can't make my brain see a way that the inner corner catchment should be on the OUTside...
