The people behind those negative comments are clearly missing the point of this video. Manvir is a great dhol player and what's even better is that he has the passion to spread the knowledge and information he's acquired over the years to keep our culture alive. With all due respect, the idea of "say it before you play it" originated far long before any of us were alive. Stop the unnecessary and inappropriate maliciousness and appreciate what this man is doing for OUR culture. Looking forward to all the upcoming videos, bro. Amazing work!

Nice. I'm curious your thoughts about where the numbering comes from. Is it just whatever we want to label? Back in the early 2000s when I was looking at this stuff, it seemed to me that these different variations were "attached" to specific actions in a a bhangra routine. While it's true that on one hand we can mix up the variations however we want, it also seemed like there was some rough consistency as to when a bhangra dholi would play one or the other variation (bracketed between tora-s) for a specific stage action. I'm also curious about your sense of "chaal 4" which, as you say, is the "bhangra" pattern. I'm not sure I've ever heard it played slow (lets say, "at chaal speed") during a bhangra presentation. (I do realize this isn't all about accompanying bhangra! Just an observation!) I think the slow version definitely works well for accompanying songs...

Random question but is there a big difference in the sound quality of dhols made by sheesham and those made by mango wood? Which one is the most common also? Thanks in advance
@ManvirHothi5 жыл бұрын
Hi Yusuke Okina, in my opinion, there is a difference in the sound that is produced by various woods because of the densities of the woods. Both are very common, but Mango (amb) is considered inferior because it is less hard. Sheeshan (tahli) is therefore the preferred choice. Lighter sheesham dhols are referred to as white sheesham or chitti tahli, while those that contain a higher percentage of the dark wood are referred to as kaali tahli or dark sheesham

Great video! Not trying to be negative here but when I learnt Dhol I was told that we play in accordance of 8 'notes' per beats. And between each note there is an equal space. Also NaNa and Na Na are two different notes?? 1. Chaal Dha Na Na Na Na Dha Dha Na 2. Udhi chaal Dha Na Dha Dha Na Dha Dha Na 3. Lambi chaal Dha Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Na Dha Dha Na 4. Bhangra Dha () () Na Na Ge Ge Na () = Empty note - Space

So the biggest issue I'm having is hand speed especially on the treble side. Faster tempos seem to screw me up. I think a lot of it might be contributed to how I'm holding the tili. Any tips?
@ManvirHothi7 жыл бұрын
The key is to practice slow and really master what you are trying to play. Once you're comfortable, start increasing the speed. If you find that you keep messing up at a certain speed, stay there until you perfect what you're attempting to do. With regards to holding the tilli, the key is to find the balance point, that is, the point that bounces freely on the drum. If you hold the stick too far towards the middle, it wont bounce and if you hold it too far back (towards the end), it will die after the strike. Hope that helps!

Thanks for this Manvir! I'm going to try practising everyday, however I have one question. At the end of the session do you "un-tense" the bass side or do you just keep the dhol with the bass side tensed all the time. I'm unsure if we have to tense and untense the bass side between playing sessions?

i wana buy a dhool which basic thing related to dhool must be in mind and what are the characteristic of THE best dhool with sticks too.
@ManvirHothi7 жыл бұрын
It all comes down to personal preference. Some people like all roped dhols, some people prefer to have the tilli side bolted, some prefer big bellied dhols, while other prefer straight barrel. I find that the general consensus leans towards kaali taali dhols (type of wood). When purchasing a drum yourself, I would recommend going through a reputable retailer who will be able to educate you on the piece that you are about to buy. Some retailers include, but not limited to: Kukki, Goldy, Ravi Dana etc.
