Well, that was so lovely! And lucky - the northern lights are pretty elusive even in the North, you never know. In Finnish they are called revontulet - foxfires.
@ChadandClaire3 жыл бұрын
We were so lucky to be able to see them!! And the Finnish word is so much better at describing them! Foxfires. So cool!
@chizera99313 жыл бұрын
@@ChadandClaire The name actually comes from an old belief in which a firefox (a mythical creature in folklore) runs in the forests/mountains and the sparks from it's fiery fur light up the sky creating the northern lights, or the so-called foxfires. 🦊

Lived in northern finland almost all of my 32 years. I've seen the northern lights several times since while elusive, they still show themselves almost every winter. Twice I've been blessed with the spectacle of the northern lights like you see in movies and such. The latter one still sends shivers through me when I'm thinking about it. The whole sky was a explosion of colors green and purple and they danced for what felt like hours, sending ripples towards the ground, fading away never making it down. Like stepping marks for this mystical dance. I can almost see it still, it's much like a spiritual experience.

You are so lucky! I have never seen the northern lights even though I am from Finland and have visited Lapland many times. Nice to see from your videos how you enjoy your stay here. Hopefully you will be able to return sometime in the summer time as well, because Finland is truly a land of extremes from darkness and northern lights to the midnight sun and 24/7 light. Helsinki and many other towns are also really cool and beautiful in the summer time. Have a good trip wherever you go next! Moi moi!

How exciting to see that in person. Love that Claire didn’t take a face plant in the snow lol🤣. How fun doing a snow sled ride with the huskies and you both do well in driving. I thought the same thing about the northern lights. We saw them in Iceland and they looked milky white with a slight hue of green in the sky and then when I took photos the green was so much more vibrant.
@xvnbm3 жыл бұрын
It also varies. They are sometimes more vibrant than some other times. They can be green, white, red, purple or blue. Green is the most common one and purple is maybe the most vibrant.
@amystaahs21183 жыл бұрын
@@xvnbm Yea, it was the end of October when I saw them so I just assumed that since it was early in the season that's why they weren't so vibrant.

Cool! (in two meanings). You were extremely lucky to see so good and bright northern lights. In September I was in northern Norway about 70°N (400km north from Rovaniemi) and saw so bright northern lights that I had ever seen in my life before. I live in the south coast of Finland and here those are very rare to see at all and when they are visible they never are very bright.

Lucky you! People who travel to the north should always manage their expectations with the northern lights because most likely all they've ever seen regarding them are heavily enhanced post card images and unusually strong ones which obviously is almost never the case in real life That doesn't make them any less beautiful though :) Just know that it's not gonna look like a massive light show
