It's annoying that you guys don't mention any of the names of what you are visiting in the cities. Everything (museums, restaurants, etc) is un-named so how would anyone ever be able to enjoy the same experience you are claiming that was soo wonderful.

They are not neighboring cities, especially citizens of those cities will insist on that fact. They are 40km away from each other and quite different in culture and language, also beer and traditions. The only thing they have in common, is that they both are located on the shores of the Rhine river. Leverkusen and Cologne are neighboring cities.

The reason why Most castles east of the Rhine were in much better shape is simple. Most castles between the French Border and the Rhine got destroyed in many wars in the 16th and 17th century fought in the western part of Germany. The french always tried to establish the Rhein as their eastern border. Even in and after 1944. So until Napoleon they never crossed the Rhine. An interesting ist that in those days stones were very expensive. So when an castle was seriously damaged and abandoned, the people in the villages around started use the stones for their own property.

Btw Cologne has a very low quality of life. Massive housing shortage, garbage everywhere, catastrophic public transport, no high-quality public parks, very loud, quite dangerous and last but not least, in many neighborhoods you don't know whether you are still in Germany or in an Arab city. We live here for over 10 years already and I am glad to move away soon.

Cologne is one of the ugliest and dirtiest cities in Germany. Tourists usually only get to know a small area around the cathedral.

Düsseldorf, my parents home town. We had a fantastic trip there this past September.

We had to make a daytrip to Salzberg from Munich this past September. After 3 days at Oktoberfest, we needed to slow down and take in some serenity. What a fantastic city. This was our favorite out of Barcelona, Rome and Munich. We will be returning!!
