One thing that I thought of this year that I've never thought of, are the possible parallels between Moses and the shepherds. Both were shepherds. The angel of the Lord appeared to both. And the glory of the Lord appeared to both. And just like when the Lord appeared to Moses, now the angel of the Lord is letting the shepherds know that he's up to something big. Do you think Luke wanted us to see any connections between these shepherds and Moses and the burning bush?

And has the story of Moses reached you? - When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance." And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses, Indeed, I AM your rabb (Lord), so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa. And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you]. Indeed, I AM Allah . There is no ilah (deity/god) except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. This is the foremost of commandments. * in arabic translation, the word used is Allah (الله) ** in arabic translation, the word used is ilah (إله) *** in arabic translation, the word used is aliha (الهة) The word ilah (إله) means a deity or a god. The word ilah is singular and indefinite. The word ilah refers to one that is prayed to and worshipped. Plural for ilah is aliha meaning deities or gods. The word Allah (الله) refers to the one and only true ilah. The word Allah is singular and definite. The ultimate statement of truth is : La ilaha illa Allah meaning There is no ilah except Allah. Taking Jesus as a deity or God is against the foremost of commandments. Allah - there is no ilah (deity/god) except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence... (Al-Quran 2:255) . But Allah bears witness to that which He has revealed to you. He has sent it down with His knowledge, and the angels bear witness [as well]. And sufficient is Allah as Witness. (Al-Quran 4: 166) Allah witnesses that there is no ilah (deity/god) except Him, and [so do] the angels and those of knowledge, maintaining [creation] in justice. There is no ilah (deity/god) except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise. (Al-Quran 3: 18) Peace brothers.

Appreciated your discussion of misconceptions surrounding the κατάλυμα and the nature of the shepherds. You steered me in the right direction and you do an amazing job - thank you. Much is left unsaid - like Mary, "we ponder all these things in our hearts". While you speculate that Mary went with Joseph to Bethlehem because she knew the baby must be born in Bethlehem, you don't directly address how "a baby lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes" might be a 'sign' to the shepherds. Whether the κατάλυμα was full because of a festival or to be registered, a pregnant mother giving birth might be a joyous but messy event in a crowded room. As such, a baby born in a house-stable could not be unusual and swaddling is common. As you indicate, the noteworthy action takes place in the pasture. When considering shepherds, even the most common ones had considerable responsibility. We note that every "first born male lamb or goat" is already dedicated to the Lord and requires sacrifice or "buy back". As such, all shepherds must pay attention to which lambs are "first born males" and lack imperfections. No doubt breeding and delivery of sheep and goats for the sacrificial system was big business - they would know the requirements for תמיד (tamid) and פסח (pesach). It's possible that not all shepherds were beyond reproach and a system which caused Jesus to call the money changers a "den of thieves" could have problems.

I love listening to your Jewish perspectives. I have a question regarding this message. I already understood that many people back in that time brought their few livestock inside the home at night. But why would there be a feeding trough inside the house at night. Weren't the animals fed during the day?
@chadbird1517

@@LindaKeser Livestock would have been brought inside before sunset, which might be to 2-5 hours before bedtime. It would not be unusual to feed the animals after the sun had set, which would necessitate having a feed trough inside the home.

Quick Question: What are the exact words in Hebrew for "how" the angels speak to the shepherds. I see the word "saying" not "singing". I also have heard in a bible study that scripture does not use the word for singing. Can you unpack that the word that is used in Hebrew. Thanks!

Thank you again brother Chad for such an enlightening presentation. Here are a few comments: (9:22) You explain that Mary perhaps made the journey to Bethlehem for the practical reason of tax enrollment and so that she could fulfill prophecy that the Messiah would be born there. (10:18) You explain that because Joseph was a descendent of David, Jesus therefore could meet the scriptural requirement of being a "son of David" from Bethlehem. I know that genealogy (whether biological or cultural) is beyond the scope of this historical discourse of barn or stable, and I have Googled to find the broader discussion of this quandary: Jesus was conceived in an immaculate process with no genetic lineage to Joseph. Mary would hopefully have been aware of scripture on the sina qua non of Bethlehem, and though females were not taught to the extent males were, still the Bethlehem connection was likely common knowledge by 4 or 5 BC approximately 400 years after the Torah's completion. If birth in Bethlehem was scriptural imperative, much of the discussion of tax registration appears superfluous. Mary was in the final days of pregnancy, it was then or never if birth in Bethlehem was to fulfill biblical imperative. She was out of time. If we are going to speculate as we certainly must (and I very much appreciate your candid admission of speculation in your discourses), maybe we can do more with biblical context. Joseph was so distraught with birth of a child he did not father that an angel had to calm his intent "to divorce her quietly". (Matthew 1:18-2). Since both Mary and Joseph had been informed by angels that her child was to be the son of God, not the son of Joseph; and since their lives were tightly governed by Hebrew scripture, they both knew they had to get to Bethlehem before her labor commenced. The alternative was the non-fulfillment of scripture, and scripture was the foundation of Jesus' messianic status. The bigger question, I think, is why "Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah" (Matthew 1:16) waited until the last minute to fulfill the scripture they knew had to be fulfilled. Tax registration could only have been purely coincidental, and indeed fortuitously so if the two of them desired a reason for that journey to obscure its true Godly purpose. Tax registration could not have been a motivation for the travel, but was the perfect cover for explaining to their family and neighbors why a very pregnant Mary was being put to the ordeal a rigorous three-day trip to Bethlehem.

When the angel said that he was bringing Good News for all the people, is there a way to clarify what that meant, or did not mean? For example: 1) It did not mean that all people would be saved - as that would be Universalism. 2) Did it mean that the good news was for all people in that for ANY person, this was good news for them and they should receive it in faith? 3) Did it mean that the good news was for all kinds of people - specifically the chosen elect of God - but not necessarily for everyone? 4) Does it mean something else?

Thankyou for your exposition. I think the most important comment that you make, is when you say that, peace comes only now that God is well pleased with man, and therefore will not destroy man, is because mankind can be and must be in Christ, and totally conformed to God's will in Christ. That being good even is not enough on its own. But God makes man totally obedient. So then He doesn't have to destroy them!. The confusion is the church preaches that God has saved us when in fact many have not taken on Christ into their hearts nor been conformed to God's will. But the reconciliation comes when, specifically when, we have been changed completely, to be totally in God's will to the same point of dedication and compliance at which Christ is. Only then are we pleasing to God!, and accepted by God, and then adopted as sons and daughters, and then we can go on, in the implied obedience and same will and power and like mindedness of Christ, from one glory to another. Used by God to bring about light and glory thus bringing others into this change, of sowing towards the light, and reaping into our souls light in this way. So, the bread of heaven touches our souls, and we live and move and have our being in doing everything that pleases God, no longer living in darkness, or a diminished capacity, that cannot see spiritual success. We become partakers of light, instead of darkness, and reap light leading to everlasting life, now accepted in the Son. And thereby avoid destruction from God. Because God does not compromise, but has set a stumbling stone. Upon which the modern world stumbles, does not live up to God's shown standards and expectations of behaviour, that would please the Lord.

Jesus was probably born in 7 b c which was a jubilee year and on the 10th day of the 7th month when liberty was proclaimed and this is probably why there was no room since the great feast was coming up. The day of small things is probably the day Jesus was born and Mary could not be with her husband until after the days of her purification which i think was 40 days for this time.

the shepherds were told to find the child in a manger. So they knew it had to be where people were living and keeping animals that were kept by feeding in a manger....not the animals that were kept in the field like their sheep. So they means the shepherds had to go looking for where such animals were being raised. Now....they knew what city to go to... so it would not be that hard to find a place where animals were kept that still had the lights on. My guess would be that Jesus was born with the animals that were guests at the inn....

Thanks for the teaching. "Christmas" isn't taught in the Bible. The birth is of course. Where, as far as the structure Jesus was born in, does not hold much importance in the Bible. What's more important is why, and how He was born. Also, I seriously doubt He was born in the winter time (December) That's my opinion anyway.

All the people means all the elect of god in all the world and not every single person if we compare scripture which we are suppose to do when we compare spiritual things. Many will not be saved that think they are saved and the ones that are saved are saved by the faith of Christ and this is a gift they do not deserve.

I think you do an excellent job in presenting your understanding of scripture, but I don't always agree with your conclusions. The primary reading of the Greek word φάτνη means an animal enclosure, although it can also be interpreted as manger or creche depending on context. In Luke 13:15 he again uses φάτνη as meaning a stall, an animal enclosure. There were no barns, as we know them, in the small village of Bethlehem, but some homes would have a small stabling area outside the house for keeping a family donkey, milk goat or cow. The sheep would likely be in a pasture. The family would not take a herd of sheep into their home each night. No animals are mentioned in the birth story. It is possible the small stabling area was cleaned so Mary and Joseph could stay there overnight until there was room in the house. People registering would be coming and leaving daily so a place in the house would open up quickly. Mary swaddling the baby and laying him in the "stall" is as viable a translation as manger. These matters are interesting to contemplate but if they were important to know then God would have given us more facts.

@@chadbird1517 Exactly. Denying the eternal virginity of Mary puts you outside the Christian Faith. Luke 1:42 and 48 - If Mary had other children they would also be our savior. That is a clear heresy. I can see you never lived on a farm. Absolutely no one has feeding toughs in the home. Swaddling clothes. This was prophetic of Christ's destiny, how the dead would be laid to rest in a tomb wrapped in burial clothes. (Remember Lazarus was entombed the same way.) I think that was about it. Thanks for the comment, Aaron. Of course, as I'm sure you are aware, this has been a long-standing debate. Orthodox, creedal Christianity, in conformity with the Scriptures, disagrees with you. Jesus is fully divine and fully human, and thus truly called God. "My Lord and my God," as Thomas says to Jesus. To make this confession necessitates that we say that God was born, Mary is the mother of God, etc. If Jesus is not God, then we are all lost. Thanks be to the Father, however, that his Son is the GodMan.

They have certainly disbelieved who say that Allah is the Messiah, the son of Mary. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them. He creates what He wills, and Allah is over all things competent. But the Jews and the Christians say, "We are the children of Allah and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" Rather, you are human beings from among those He has created. @Richard Bussell God is only one. God is not one group of three. God is not one family of one father and one son which God does not have. God sent messengers. God is not a messenger. Jesus was a messenger from a long line of messengers that includes Noah, Abraham and Moses. Messengers are chosen from men to convey message to men. And We have already SENT Noah and Abraham and placed in their descendants prophethood and scripture; and among them is he who is guided, but many of them are defiantly disobedient. Then We SENT following their footsteps Our messengers and followed [them] with Jesus, the son of Mary, and gave him the Injil (Gospel). (Al-Quran 57: 26-27) Then We SENT after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, but they were unjust toward them. So see how was the end of the corrupters. And Moses said, O Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of the worlds Obligated not to say about Allah except the truth. I have come to you with clear evidence from your Lord, so send with me the Children of Israel. (Al-Quran 7: 103-105) And We did certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up after him with messengers. (Al-Quran 2: 87) The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers have passed on before him. And his mother was a supporter of truth. (Al-Quran 5: 75) Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allah confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allah . And upon Allah let the believers rely. (Al-Quran 14: 11) God sent Jesus. God is not Jesus. Allah chooses from the angels, messengers and from men. Surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (Al-Quran 22: 75) There are angel messengers He sends down the angels, with the inspiration of His command, upon whom He wills of His servants, "Warn that there is no ilah (deity/god) except Me; so fear Me." (Al-Quran 16: 2) Angel Gabriel is referred to as The Spirit. And mention, in AlKitab (the Book), Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east. And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Spirit (Angel Gabriel), and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man. She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allah ." He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy." She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?" He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.' (Al-Quran Translation/interpretation Chapter Mary/Maryam(19) : 16-21) Gabriel identified himself to Mary as "the messenger of your Lord". The story of Gabriel appearing before Mary(Maryam) to inform her about her future son (Jesus/Isa) is also mentioned in the gospels. *Angels informing the coming of a newborn child is consistent with angels visiting Abraham and his wife informing them about their future son, Isaac and Jacob and an angel informing Zachariah about his future son, John (Yahya), both incidents mentioned in the current gospels and in the Quran. Angel Gabriel (Jibril) is mentioned by name as the one who brought down the Quran to Prophet Muhammad: Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Jibril (Gabriel) - it is he who has brought it (the Qur'an) down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission of Allah, confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings for the believers." Whoever is an enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Jibril and Mikal (Michael) - then indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers. (Al-Quran translation 2: 97-98) The one who brought it down is also referred to as below: And indeed, it (the Qur'an) is the revelation of the Lord of the worlds. Has brought it down by Arruhul-amin (The Trustworthy Spirit) (Al-Quran translation 26: 192-193) Say, [O Muhammad], "ruhulQudus (spirit of the Holy) has brought it down from your rabb (Lord) in truth to make firm those who believe and as guidance and good tidings to the Muslims." (Al-Quran translations 16: 102) Ruh Al-Quddus is mentioned in the arabic Quran. Ruh meaning spirit, Al-Quddus is one of the names of God, meaning The Holy/ All-Holy/ All-Pure. Angels have wings. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over all things competent. (Al-Quran 35: 1) Who did Jesus actually see descending that is mentioned in the gospels. [Gabriel said], "And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful - (Al-Quran 19: 64) God sent angels. God is not an angel. It is not for a human [prophet] that Allah should give him the Scripture and authority and prophethood and then he would say to the people, "Be servants to me rather than Allah," rather, "be rabbaniyyun, because you are teaching the Book, and you are studying it." Nor could he order you to take the angels and prophets as arbaban (lords). Would he order you to disbelief after you had been Muslims? (Al-Quran 3: 79-80) There are angel messengers There are human messengers. God is not an angel. God is not a human. God is only one. God have no son. God is not one third of three. God is not a messenger. God sent messengers. Indeed, Allah is but one ilah (deity/god). Exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And sufficient is Allah as Disposer of affairs. (Al-Quran 4: 171) فِي الْبَدْءِ خَلَقَ اللهُ (Allah) السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ According to arabic translations of the bible that you can find online, Allah (الله ) is the Creator of the heavens and the earth in Genesis 1: 1 Indeed, your rabb (Lord) is Allah, who created the heavens and earth ...
