Part two of this four-hour series on the rise of Christianity follows the story of the first attempts to write the life of Jesus in the Gospels, and chronicles how the Christian movement would face new challenges both internal and external.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate
First broadcast in 1998, “From Jesus to Christ: The First Christians” is an exploration into the life and death of Jesus, and the men and women whose belief, conviction, and martyrdom created the religion we now know as Christianity. Drawing upon historical evidence, the series challenges familiar assumptions and conventional notions about Christian origins.

It is amusing to hear the profound arrogance of someone knowing of God, as if He were known outside of fiction. The believer & the literate are separated by the vocabulary of fiction: Blasphemy, God, faith, prayer, prophet, etc. Matthew 17:20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” I like asking believers how they can possibly think their faith is respectable, given Jesus said faith is worthless, since you can't expect obedience when ordering mountains to move? Freud wrote, "The antidote to Christianity is literacy". Blasphemy is a fiction vocabulary word. Blasphemy is a victimless crime. Believers lack of quality-control, so we are to pretend their God made Mormons so Christians would know how Jews feel. Like playing book tag.

@@burdinefoxthis is long but have your Muslim friends read this. These are excerpts from a letter written in 1899 by Ivan Panin, a Jewish Russian scholar at Harvard who became a Christian. He wrote 40,000+ pages of analysis of both the OT and NT in their original languages of Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek, like you’ll read below. No human, group of humans, nor any computer, could accomplish this: Excerpts from Dr. Ivan Panin's 1899 Letter to the New York Sun The first 17 verses of the New Testament contain the genealogy of the Christ. It consists of two main parts: Verses 1-11 cover the period from Abraham, the father of the chosen people, to the Captivity, when they ceased as an independent people. Verses 12-17 cover the period from the Captivity to the promised Deliverer, the Christ. Let us examine the first part of this genealogy. Its vocabulary has 49 words, or 7 x 7. This number is itself seven (Feature 1) sevens (Feature 2), and the sum of its factors is 2 sevens (Feature 3). Of these 49 words 28, or 4 sevens, begin with a vowel; and 21, or 3 sevens, begin with a consonant (Feature 4). Again: these 49 words of the vocabulary have 266 letters, or 7 x 2 x 19; this number is itself 38 sevens (Feature 5), and the sum of its factors is 28, or 4 sevens (Feature 6, while the sum of its figures is 14, or 2 sevens (Feature 7). Of these 266 letters, moreover, 140, or 20 sevens, are vowels, and 126, or 18 sevens, are consonants (Feature 8). That is to say: Just as the number of words in the vocabulary is a multiple of seven, so is the number of its letters a multiple of seven; just as the sum of the factors of the number of the words is a multiple of seven, so is the sum of the factors of the number of their letters a multiple of seven. And just as the number of words is divided between vowel words and consonant words by sevens, so is their number of letters divided between vowels and consonants by sevens. Again: Of these 49 words 35, or 5 sevens, occur more than once in the passage; and 14, or 2 sevens, occur but once (Feature 9); seven occur in more than one form, and 42, or 6 sevens, occur in only one form (Feature 10). And among the parts of speech the 49 words are thus divided: 42, or 6 sevens, are nouns, seven are not nouns (Feature 12). Of the nouns 35 or 5 sevens, are Proper names, seven are common nouns (Feature 12). Of the Proper names 28 are male ancestors of the Christ, and seven are not (Feature 13). Moreover, these 49 words are distributed alphabetically thus: Words under A-E are 21 in number, or 3 sevens; Z-K 14, or 2 sevens; M-X also 14. No other groups of sevens stopping at the end of a letter are made by these 49 words, the groups of sevens stop with these letters and no others. But the letters A, E, Z, K, M, X, are letters 1, 5, 6, 10, 12, 22, of the Greek alphabet, and the sum of these numbers (called their Place Values) is 56, or 8 sevens (Feature 14). … … The New Testament is written in Greek. The Greeks had no separate symbols for expressing numbers, corresponding to our Arabic figures, but used instead the letters of their alphabet: just as the Hebrews, in whose language the Old Testament is written, made use for the same purpose of theirs. Accordingly, the 24 Greek letters stand for the following numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800. Every Greek word is thus a sum in arithmetic obtained by adding the numbers for which its letters stand, or their numeric values. Now the vocabulary to the entire genealogy has 72 words. If we write its numeric value over each of these 72 words, and add them, we get for their sum 42,364, or 6,052 sevens, distributed into the following alphabetical groups only: A-B, have 9,821, or 1,403 sevens: G-D, 1,904, or 272 sevens; 3,703, or 529 sevens; TH-R, 19,264, or 2,752 sevens; A-X 7,672, or 1,096 sevens. But the numeric value of the 10 letters used for making these groups is 931, or 7 x 7 x 19, a multiple not only of seven but of seven sevens. … The second part of this chapter, verses 18-25, relates the birth of the Christ. It consists of 161 words, or 23 sevens; occurring in 105 forms, or 15 sevens, with a vocabulary of 77 words or 11 sevens. Joseph is spoken to here by an angel. Accordingly, of the 77 words the angel uses 28 or 4 sevens; of the 105 forms he uses 35 or 5 sevens; the numeric value of the vocabulary is 52,605 or 7,515 sevens; of the forms, 65,429 or 9,347 sevens. This enumeration only begins as it were barely to scratch the surface of the numerics of this passage. But what is specially noteworthy here is the fact that the angel’s speech has also a scheme of sevens making it a kind of ring within a ring, a wheel within a wheel. If Mr. L. can write a similar passage of 161 words with the same scheme of sevens alone (though there are several others here) in some three years, he would have accomplished a still greater wonder. Let us assume that Matthew accomplished this feat in only 6 months. 3. The second chapter of Matthew tells of the childhood of the Christ. Its vocabulary has 161 words, or 23 sevens, with 896 letters, or 128 sevens, and 238 forms, or 34 sevens; the numeric value of the vocabulary is 123,529 or 17, 647 sevens; of the forms, 166,985 or 23, 885 sevens; and so on through pages of enumeration. This chapter has at least four logical divisions, and each division shows alone the same phenomena found in the chapter as a whole. Thus the first six verses have a vocabulary of 56 words, or 8 sevens, etc. There are some speeches here: Herod speaks, the Magi speak, the angel speaks. But so pronounced are numeric phenomena here, that though there are as it were numerous rings within rings, and wheels within wheels, each is perfect in itself through forming all the while only part of the rest… 4. There is not, however, a single paragraph of the scores in Matthew that is not constructed in exactly the same manner. Only with each additional paragraph the difficulty of constructing it increases not in arithmatical, but in geometrical progression. For he contrives to write his paragraphs so as to develop constantly fixed numeric relations to what goes before and after. Thus in his last chapter he contrives to use just 7 words not used by him before… Anyhow, Matthew did it, and we thus have a miracle - an unheard-or literary, mathematical artist, unequaled, hardly even conceivable… A second fact is yet more important: In his very first section, the genealogy discussed above, the words found nowhere else in the New Testament occur 42 times, 7 x 6; and have 126 letters, 7 x 6 x 3, each number a multiple not only of seven, but of 6 sevens, to name only two of the many numeric features of these words. But how did Matthew know, when designing this scheme for these words (whose sole characteristic is that they are found nowhere else in the New Testament) that they would not be found in the other 26 books? That they would not be used by the other 7 New Testament writers? Unless we assume the impossible hypothesis that he had an agreement with them to that effect, he must have had the rest of the New Testament before him when he wrote his book. The Gospel of Matthew, then, was written last. 5. It so happens, however, that the Gospel of Mark shows the very same phenomena. Thus the very passage called so triumphantly in today’s SUN a ‘forgery,’ the Last Twelve Verses of Mark, presents among some sixty features of sevens the following phenomena: It has 175 words, or 25 sevens, a vocabulary of 98 words, or 2 sevens of sevens, with 553 letters, or 79 sevens; 133 forms, or 19 sevens, and so on to the minutest detail. Mark then, is another miracle, another unparalled literary genius. And in the same way in which it was shown that Matthew wrote last it is also shown that Mark, too, wrote last. Thus to take an example from this very passage: It has just one word found nowhere else in the New Testament, theta, alpha, nu, alpha, sigma, iota, upsilon, omicron, sigma, deadly. This fact is signaled by no less than seven features of sevens, thus: its numeric value is 581 or 83 sevens, with the sum of its figures 14, or 2 sevens, of which the letters 3, 5, 7, 9 from the beginning of the word have 490, or 7 x 7 x 5 x 2: a multiple of seven sevens, with the sum of its factors 21, or 3 sevens. In the vocabulary it is preceded by 42 words: 7 x 6; in the passage itself by 126 words, or 7 x 6 x 3, both numbers multiples not only of seven, but of 6 sevens. We have thus established before us this third fact for Mr. L. to contemplate: Matthew surely wrote after Mark, and Mark just as surely wrote after Matthew. 6. It happens, however, to be a fourth fact that Luke presents the same phenomena as Matthew and Mark, and so does John, and James, and Peter, and Jude, and Paul. And we have thus no longer two great unheard-of mathematical literati, but eight of them and each wrote after the other. 7. And not only this: As Luke and Peter wrote each 2 books, John 5, and Paul 14, it can in the same way be shown that each of the 27 New Testament books was written last. In fact, not a page of the over 500 in Wescott and Hort’s Greek edition (which the writer has used throughout) but it can be demonstrated thus to have been written last. The phenomena are there and there is no human way of explaining them. Eight men cannot each write last, 27 books, some 500 pages, cannot each be written last. But lets assume that one Mind directed the whole, and the problem is solved simply enough: by this Verbal Inspiration - of every jot and tittle of the New Testament. There remains only to be added that by precisely the same kind of evidence the Hebrew Old Testament is proved to be equally inspired. This the very first verse of Genesis has seven words, 28 letters, or 4 sevens: to name only two out of the dozens of numeric features of this one verse of only seven words.

it is documentaries like this which demonstrate how a system of religious freedom under the Roman Empire was replaced by a system of utter intolerance towards opposing religious viewpoints under the emerging Catholic Church. The Roman Empire, despite its faults, had as its central core belief the freedom of religion as long a you did your civic duty as a Roman citizen and sacrificed to the imperial cult. I would agree the Christian religion has evolved quite a bit in a good way during the past 300 years, but prior to that time hindered progress, blocked science, and was an affront to the human race. It created an excuse to form the Islam religion as a competitor. Conservative estimates place the number of years at 1,300 that were lost prior to the Enlightenment, a Dark Age that must never be repeated again.

The historical point of view is he was one of many mystics and supposed miracle-workers who, whether by chance or by the power of his influence on his followers (nothing supernatural), became the center of a wholly invented / plagiarized religion (virgin birth, resurrection, etc.) The historical point of view is that Jesus, if he or anyone upon whom he is based actually existed, was a mortal man about whom we know very little. But what we do know is that he universe is around 14 billion years old, the earth is around 4 billion years old, and humans are an evolved animal with DNA, with nothing special / spiritual / supernatural about us just because we have the most powerful brains. Some animal must have the most powerful brains, we just happen to be it on planet earth - it doesn't make any of our mythologies or anti-scientific thinking true.

So much is left out in this. If it causes anyone to be interested in learning more than that is the work of the Holy Spirit. Everything Jesus said on the cross and most of the things he said all throughout his life were quotes from the Old Testament. Like Jesus often we feel abandoned by God even when we are doing the right thing. We just have to trust God enough to understand we may not understand the whole plan but he does

Did you not watch the documentary? How does one of many rabbis, eccentric moral reformer; still a common criminal & failed apocalyptic prophet. come to be known as the Jewish diety Yahweh? (god)In the end confronted with the fact we die alone. Paul loved the myth and was able to start his own religion by mixing & continuing the traditions of the cosmopolitan gods & cults in the cities. So interesting the Jesus followers were originally Pagans & and polytheists were urban. I digress (Pagano = rural folk,hillbilly,yoke It’s really simple math in the end if a gentile adds a god 🤷‍♀️ adds the Jewish god -1 pagan If 10 OG Christians convert 1 gentile a year ur in the millions within a generation so all you really need an avg of one in a lifetime..🤬 spell check

The theology of the death, life and resurrection of Jesus is way much more complete than this people make it... Paul was already talking about his death and resurrection before Matthew wrote his gospel and the early Christian had a reach understanding of the Law and the Torah which they always used to prove their points of view. It is not as simplistic as some of these people seem to make it... they were quite sophisticated for their time.

These people are ignorant because they don't have the Holy Spirit in them, that's why The Word is hidden from these types of people. You have to believe that Jesus was born of a virgin, walked as a man & Jesus as The Messiah that has already come, lived then died for our sins then Rose on the 3rd day (defeated death) then God's/Jesus' Spirit (The Holy Ghost) which dwells inside of Christian's (The Church) so we are God's Temple here on earth.. He will come back to get His church one day & every knee & head will bow to Him as God then he will judge all that never excepted God's only Son (Jesus), if you don't believe on Jesus & ask for his forgiveness, follow Him to be saved by His grace to wash away your sins (past & future) you can never enter heaven. This is the only way we are able to be with a Holy God. This is exactly why you have to know that Jesus is Word that was with God in the beginning and became flesh. The KJV is a perfect Bible that was written by The Holy Spirit. Understanding the trinity is important to understand all of this. I pray you find Jesus and accept Him as your Lord that died for your sins. Seek & you will find The Truth (Jesus)

The story of Christianity’s transformation from the lowest possible beginning to a force of nature and the world’s most significant religion is really the most remarkable series of events that has ever happened. Whether or not you’re Christian, from a convicted criminal who died a painful death to the founder of the world’s largest religion that shaped all of human history for the entire planet even down to the way we perceive time- it’s truly awe-inspiring.
@TheBenadam
@TheBenadam Жыл бұрын
Not so much if you really know the true history. There is no more connection between that convicted criminal and what we have today than there is between Prophet Nat Turner and the modern American empire. But history is turned to myth and myth to history by the way of the institutionalized deception apparatus created by Rome and her daughter harlots among the nations. Christianity’s origin can be bookmarked between the visions of two pagan generals, one Paul of Tarsus who was dedicated to killing Yeshua’s person and then spent the rest of his life destroying his message through an unrecognizable transmogrification, the other Emperor Constantine who finished what Paul had started.

@@billscannell93 I”ve read three so far. Just recently discovered him. Even though I’m not a Christian, I was raised as one and still believe in God. I’ve been fascinated for a few years now about the history of Christianity and the Bible. The one I just finished is “Jesus Interrupted”. Covers some of the contradictions and discrepancies in the New Testament. This has been my favorite so far. The others I’ve read were also excellent reads, imho. “Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife” was rather eye opening. It shows the connection of some beliefs in Judaism to other cultures in the Levant, especially the Persians, Greeks and Babylonians. Some of it I already knew but I learned quite a lot from that book. The other was “The Triumph of Christianity: How a Forbidden Religion Swept the World”. Some of what this video showed is covered. Some of the more fundamentalist types don’t like him because he’s an agnostic, but as he states, most of what he covers is already known and agreed on by most scholars. He does offer his own opinion on something’s, but nothing that’s not reasonable. He even knows other scholars, like himself, that still remain Christians, and states it wasn’t his knowledge of the history that led him to leave the church, but he couldn’t reconcile a loving God with all the human suffering in the world.

The Bible does not at all support the Christian belief in trinity. One of the scribes once asked Jesus (pbuh) as to which was the first commandment of all; to which Jesus (pbuh) reiterated what Moses (pbuh) had said, namely: “Shama Israelu Adonai Ila Hayno Adonai Ikhad” It is a Hebrew quotation, which means, “Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord.” (Gospel of Mark 12:29)

As a biblical Christian I find this doc quite useful. There are those that say Christ Himself is a myth. A superficial breeze through history quashes that belief and renders the opinion of those who believe there was no Christ to be invalid. (I know, today, all opinions are valid. But in reality they are not.) I take comfort that Christ is the enemy of present and ancient world systems. Ever ask why? He used no army. Never robbed stole killed lied or anything that could be considered a crime. His only crime was truth. His followers are taught to forgive their enemies. Pray for those that despitefully use you. Turn the other cheek. Can’t get more non threatening than that. So why the vitriol ? Simple. “ men, love darkness, rather than the light, because their deeds are evil.” Nutshell. They hated Jesus because His very presence exposes our deeds and makes us rethink our actions. Now more than ever.

I have an amazing story. One day I was driving home, when all of a sudden the Lord came to me in spirit. I felt very close to Him. I knew if I asked him to play any song on the radio he would, I guess to bless my faith. So I said "ok, Lord play "Come as you are by Nirvana". I turned on the radio and the song started playing right there on the spot, perfectly… I started getting flooded with chills like a waterfall, crying, and trembling. He stayed with me for 10 minutes in my driveway. until I got outta the car. A couple months after that I started getting amazing prayers answered way more often, because it helped me quit doubting when I pray and I was lined up with biblical instructions. It's 6 years later and I still get answered prayers in Jesus name.

@@robbiebobbie2011 No. That's very rare for me. But, let me share a bit more. There have been 3 or 4 people healed from stage four cancer at one church I go to. Another woman was healed of cancer there not to long ago. A deaf woman had hearing restored in another church. A few years ago a woman called me out of the blue and told me her schizophrenia was completely healed after I prayed for her years ago. A few years ago, I told a co-worker 2 stories and asked if I could pray for him and he said yeah. I prayed for his family, his finances, and things. I came to work 4 days later. He said he had gotten promoted to GM Manager over a bunch of different stores. Getting paid from 900 to 1600 and his wife was getting insane overtime hours. I mentioned that we prayed and he looked at me like he saw a ghost.

@@robbiebobbie2011 They were going to the hospital, but stage four cancer, can't just heal miraculously overnight like that from what I understand. Stage four means you're in the stage, where it's so out of control you're certainly going to die. But, those people weren't from my prayers. The whole church was praying for them. I only prayed for one of them. The woman that had schizophrenia, took medication to help her cope with it, but it wasn't a cure. I don't think there is a cure for schizophrenia. The deaf woman, was cured when the church prayed as well. I don't know if she was getting treatment, but since she came and told the church she was healed by Jesus, I assume it probably wasn't from doctors. Not sure if there is an actual cure for deafness either.

Constantine defeated Maxentius at the Battle of Milvian Bridge ... after winning the battle Constantine painted Maxentius as a persecutor of Christians ... while not pro-Christian, Max was tolerant of the faith ... it had already become established thru-out the empire and was a force to be reckoned with ... Constantine was more pragmatic and saw the benefit of getting the Christians on his side pronto-mundo ...and Constantine did not actually convert to Christianity until much later ... very near to his own death ... he claimed that as emperor he could not adhere to the compassionate teachings of the church ... it simply was not feasible to run the empire and be a good Christian ...actually quite true

Constantine did not start the Catholic Church, contrary to protestant narratives. It had been around for at least 300 years prior he used to walk in on masses and just observe & his mother Helena was a Catholic.

How can they talk about the first Christians and Hebrews and not mention the earliest establishment in Ethiopia, West, and South Africa. Ethiopia was the first Christian nation. How can you talk about the Hebrews history without talking about those that settled in Ethiopia and in West and South Africa after the destruction of Jerusalem. This really gets scary to the church and the synagogue. The first Africans to be deported in the transatlantic slave trade were Biblical Hebrews from the tribe of Yudah. People in this country who try to dodge the responsibility for slavery by proclaiming other African tribes were selling other Africans into slavery. There's a part of that story that was intentionally left out. The Biblical Hebrews tribe of Yudah living in West Africa were different from the other West African tribes. They were singled out to be the first captured Africans sold into the transatlantic slave trade in the Western Hemisphere. This information must be terrifying to the church and present-day Jews. Present-day Jews converted to Judaism in 740 AD under King Bulan. The European Jew therefore has no archaeological, genetic, or historical connection to the original Biblical Hebrews. Jews are European gentiles who lived in the Kazarian Empire. The kingdom occupied the region between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea and as far north as the present day city of Keiv. When the new Jewish Kingdom eventually failed the people spread out across Eastern and Western Europe. The devil has deceived the whole world. This video is an intentional attempt to deceive and distract. It's an attempt to explain Christianity as a European religion when actually the Bible is a black history book. This video attempts to draw a connection between European Jews and the biblical Hebrews that did not exist. The Biblical Hebrews were Africans. There was no physical difference between the Hebrew Israelites, Egyptians and the Ethiopians. They were all Africans and technically the holy land is in AFRICA.
