The first throw: a common type of uchimata sukashi. I learnt that version from my father who learnt it in the 60s or 70s in Yugoslavia. The second throw: kosoto gake. This variant of kosoto gake is used a lot by new judoka until they realise they are getting easily countered by uchimata. Rolling oguruma: banned in judo as it is a variant of kani basami.

I used to train Judo with a couple of very high level Russian Sambo players (they were both excellent black belt Judo players also). I asked them what they preferred Judo or Sambo, and both said pretty simultaneously they liked them both the same. They said one week we do Judo competition, next week we do Sambo competition. Their juji gatame was next level, and I have trained under and with Olympic Judo players several BJJ black belts, but I would rank their transitions into juji as good as anyones. I had one of them in my guard, and he stacked me so hard to pass guard I couldn't believe how he got so much pressure on my upper body, and he was 7kg lighter than me. Both great guys. ( BTW Gadavlia is a great throw, like a really committed tomi nage).
@zenly_csgo10 ай бұрын
Sambo invetions in juji gatame techniques was massive. It is basic lock in sambo because chokes are not allowed
@sambofusion948610 ай бұрын
Enjoyed your comment. I would note one thing tho. Gadavlia and tomoe nage are not comparable. One is an arch (virtually suplex) another is a back roll. Any fool can do tomoe nage. Only a few - Gadavlia. Waaaay more complex throw. Also, Gadavlia is shaped like a sumi gaeshi not tomoe nage :)

I think the first 2 throws are variations of "Grapevine Takedown" from Catch Wrestling. I've seen Old School Catch wrestlers do it from multiple setups. And Catch was quite popular in Russia... maybe that's where Sambo picked it up.

In my opinion: the "front Uchi-Mata-Sukashi" can be seen as a variation of Kawazu-Gake (changing the direction of the throw) or a variation of Uchi-Mata itself (changing the way to approach the leg), which I think is more adequate; the cross-grip Te Waza is definitely a variation of Sumi-Otoshi; next is a variation of Kata-Guruma; and the last one ("O-Guruma-Makikomi) should not be scored as a throw but rather as a form of Juji-Gatame from a standing stance, once in the motion there is clearly a stoppage when Tori falls down, and then he rolls into the armbar. It's hard to find a new technique in Judo, once it is defined by its biomechanics.

Couldn't be a juji gatame, seeing as the arm is completely outside the legs. I thought it was a standing entry to a premium sweep, but the entanglement is backwards! Very unique

Chadi sitting down eliminates the throw and take down, you can expect barambollos, inversion wrestle ups sweeps and leg lock entrys.....it is a tactics of many in BJJ. The practical application would be in the individual had a leg disabled or was not able to stand or could not risk a slam or a take down. There would still be a chance to execute a technique above, this would be a adaptation to Newaza and BJJ in self defense.

Hi Chadi, isn’t the arsenal of techniques in sambo richer than in judo?
@lorenzobianchini409511 ай бұрын
I practiced judo for many years and also sambo for a period. however, if we consider judo and competitive sambo, sambo has a broader technical arsenal due to a regulatory issue. in judo many techniques that belong to its arsenal are banned by the new rules. sambo competitions today look a lot like judo competitions before the regulation changes.
@xjoshsaucex11 ай бұрын
Many good sambo players have a background in alot of disciplines, being a black belt in judo is minimum for most, alot of them have judo, wrestling, boxing, etc... Much richer in my opinion
@lorenzobianchini409511 ай бұрын
@@xjoshsaucex what you are talking about is Combat Sambo which also involves the use of punches, kicks, elbow strikes etc. Sambo as a fighting style essentially involves the same techniques that were allowed in old-style Judo competitions, now the regulatory changes have prohibited many techniques, in particular leg holds.

Although in the spirit of judo and the ippon, Tori is clearly taking the brunt of the impact from the ground.. This really goes back to the video you've made before where the concept of the ippon has been undermined so much that ippons are scored when people roll around and there's not even a hard impact.. a shame

A lot of jiu jitsu techniques are not found in judo. Judo has eliminated many of these take down and ground fighting techniques because of its athleticism. 8:05 there are old videos of judoka using the same technique as this and finishing it off with an armbar
@PhysiKarlz11 ай бұрын
Flying juji requires the near arm between the legs. What the Judoka did here is a variant of kani basami because Uke's legs are between Tori's, no arm.

it is literally old preolimpic judo , sambo called "free style wrestling judo" in the begining and then after ww2 they waned to cut Japan mentions , also we got new free style wrestling and sambo splits on freestyle wrestling and sambo - many sambo champions were also freestyle wrestling champions back then - we called freestyle wrestling as sambo wthout Gi . and later in 50s 60s sambo practitioners began to compete in international judo tournaments - you can call - old judo developed in russia vs new olimpic judo time.
