why is potential just added together and not split into components?

OHHHHH because its scalar lol. Just magnitude and no direction

Pause: around 5 minutes, do you mean 0J, 25J, and 50J not q right?

My apologies Ben! I just stumbled upon your unanswered question and while it may not matter anymore I'll answer it anyway. Potential energy is equal to qV for a point charge. So point charge with a charge of q Coloumbs would have a potential energy of 25q Joules at a point in space with a potential of 25V and a potential energy of 50q Joules at a point in space with a potential of 50V. So did mean to include the q in each 'value,' I just didn't indicate that they were all in units of Joules. You'll see this kind of convention is pretty common in Physics texts on this topic. Hope this helps (though I realize it is probably past the point of helping) and Happy Studying!

why is potential energy higher at the top for a negative charge?
@ChadsPrep
@ChadsPrep 3 жыл бұрын
It's not. Be careful to distinguish between potential and potential energy. The potential is irrespective of the charge of the particle that 'feels' it. But the potential energy of the particle will depend upon whether it is positively or negatively charged. The potential is higher at the top of the diagram I drew on the board. This is independent of any particle 'feeling' it or not. Now a positive charge will have a higher potential energy in a region of higher potential. But a negative charge will have a LOWER potential energy in a region of higher potential which is at the top of the diagram in the video. Hope this helps!🙂

Thank you!! I also noticed you use -E or where supposed to for v=-Ed is it negative for both e and d because you are going against the electric field?

Teaching students in the classroom and the one-on-one tutoring I used to do was a lot of fun and really satisfying. Unfortunately I don't get much chance to do it anymore.
