I chuckled at this when you got the underlay out, I am currently building a layout and by coincidence I am using that exact stuff. I bought 2 packs to do our bathroom and have ended up stealing it to do my layout. I have found it's very vulnerable to bumps and heat but I am happy with it compared to the cost of cork.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
Now I’m starting to worry Tom, regarding the bumps and heat! Regards Charlie
@TomScrut4 жыл бұрын
@@ChadwickModelRailway I say bumps as in if you knock it or lean too hard on it, not a bumpy surface. For example if I lean over with my elbows on the surface. I have found getting an off cut and putting it under these areas help if there is somewhere you're leaning a lot, it only marks the top layer then it seems Heat wise it's just I made the mistake of turning track upside down on it and soldering some wire to the bottom and it marked it. As long as you don't expose it to metal you're soldering I don't think heat will be an issue. I'd not solder droppers on after laying the track though. Or knocking it with track ends. I aren't concerned as I'll be ballasting etc where it is in due course anyway.

Thanks Charlie its good to see such progress. Something I learnt after my long fiddle yard was created was that B&Q sell ally channel about 15.5 mm wide in a long length. It can be used instead of the track setter for long lengths of straight track by simply dropping it between the track on OO both code 75 and code 100. That way you can get very straight runs of track. A 2 or 3 metre run and another one split 1/3 & 2/3 will give you many options for straight runs. Keep them coming , can't wait to see whole fiddle yard completed with both helixes.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын

Excellent explained fiddle yard point end board Charlie. I like how you have it all laid out with the wiring, point motors, and the controller units etc. It may look like a multi motorway lane junction, but you can physically see the on and off (power) slip roads and sub route lanes (point motors, terminal blocks and controllers) going to there respective destinations (yes you can use that analogy. Like the old saying K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) not the US rock band or Knights In Satan's Service, LOL. Well done Charlie. Good info there. Only 62? 😁 5 years behind me. My current problem is getting deliveries from the UK to Australia. I picked up a Hornby Duchess of Sutherland for a bargain price from eBay. It’s nearly 50 yrs old and I knew it would need a couple of buffers that are missing and smoke deflectors. Can’t get them here, but I did find them at Peters Spares in the UK. The total cost is about £12. However... with postage, the cost is approximately £30. (These items would fit in a tea bag) This is another example of how the pandemic is affecting overseas postage rates. Lack of international travel by air has blown out the cost of freight. Resorting to manufacturing my own from plasticard. Such is life!

Hi Charlie, I have to admit I also used Anyrail to design my baseboard layout, albeit after trying a number of other software's that only confused me. I do agree it a great piece of design software, what it is very useful for is trying out various changes to the layout to see it it looks right before actually ripping out your previous hard work. I wasn't aware of the Tortoise point motors until after I had plumbed for DCC Concepts Omega point motors, these work just the same but you don't have to solder any connections as they are all pressure clamped by little levers, everything else is the same as the Tortoise as they can be used on analogue or DCC. A very tidy construction, it's a credit to you for your forward planning.

Yet another fab video. I really like your vids because they are intersting, instructive and at the same time funny in places. Can I just point out a couple of things that might be useful? When stripping the wires just strip enough so that the insulation is up to but not touching the rails. I say this because when showing us the connecting of the stock rail to the blade you put both red and black wires down the same hole and to me you left just enough bare wire to possibly short out when together in the hole. Another point, no pun intended, when wiring the point motors I find it easier to solder short lengths to the motor and terminate the other end into choc blocks like you did with the accessory decoders and the block detectors so that any alterations needed is easier. Looking forward very much to the next instalment.

Hi Charlie. I like Larry Puckett's version of modifying the electrofrog points by cutting either side of the frog and, leaving the two jumper wires in situ. This made the fitting of plastic isolators on the frog rails redundant plus, if your points need to be next to a curve, means you can solder the rails so you get a better transition. Personally, I much prefer the MegaPoints Controller methodology for point control and Mimic Panel control. Each to their own, though.

That's looking superb Charlie. Great work. Regarding the comment about UV stability of Polystyrene Foam, unless the layout is outside it's unlikely to be a problem. Firstly, glass (as in windows) blocks UVB and UVC rays, which is why you can't get a Suntan under glass! Secondly, in most cases the foam will be covered in scenics i.e Ballast and Grass etc. so won't be exposed anyway. Can't wait to see it finished.

Hi Charlie just been catching up with your latest videos and more interesting and informative content the fiddle yard and helix are coming on-great and chadwick will look amazing when it is all connected all your hard work is paying off I have also ordered a few things for Beighton Parkway like scenic buildings and another back scene I managed to install coach lighting into one of my coaches then Covid-19 put pay to anything else today is my first day that I have stayed awake enough so I put chadwick on tv and to get back to a little normality I haven’t had the energy to even pick up my dcc controller so looking at chadwick is a step in the right direction take care Charlie keep safe what ever tier your in after lockdown see you in your next installment Best wishes Kev

Hi Charlie, Another great video. I must compliment you on the excellent cabling and wiring of your fiddle yard baseboard, I take it you have also made notes to go with it? All the extra care hard work will hopefully pay off and give you many years of trouble free running. Looking forward to the next instalment. Kind regards, David.

A spritely 62 Charlie! I think we all like to think we're capable of a spot of joinery to make up baseboards, but if you have the set up for it, I definitely think the modular set up you have takes a lot of the "strain" out of it. Very neat result. Cheers

Looking good Charlie - it's all coming on nicely. I understand your 'fire alarm battery' description - the old PP3 now a 6LR61...for me it's my guitar battery :) Things used to be simpler!

Great update Charlie. One thought - the FY is pretty low off the floor - hope you are putting in a block and tackle - just in case the "old knees" decide not to play - lol. Seriously video was up to your usual high standard. Cheers Euan

haha sounds just like when my wife comes out to my workshop Charlie.... great video by the way and very tidy wire work, warms my engineers heart to see it as rats nests make me shudder... Final note I am 46 and I have no intention of selling this house ever, well that is the plan, I have a 5m by 4m space to build my layout in but I suspect I should try and make some of it modular just in case.

I would like recommend the DCC Concepts Cobalt ip point motors which require no soldering and come with a vibration pad, they really are superb. Also check out the Megapoints controllers system for point control which is easy to install and uses less wires. Great video Charlie

I use an 8 pin socket to plug onto the male connectors, adds to the expense, but prevents heat from penetrating the machine.

I do like them Sam but they are so overpriced.

SUPER VID AS ALWAYS I plan on sliding a nice set of green and red at the start of each line for easy visual representation of which line is active as opposed to signals practicality is always cool. That’s a posh fiddleyard I reckon I might just slap some Hornby surface mounts on if I ever have Chadwick lolly. Those cables are screaming for you investing in a cable comb otherwise top notch watch!
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
Great point about the cable comb. Do you have a link Josef?

@@ChadwickModelRailway I have it in a picture on my you tube Channel just KZbin Josef Hi-Fi cable. Anyways that’s larger scale but with so many owning 3D printers etc. It would be a snap to make but it’s a small scale and probably would not warrant the concern but between you and me I think it’s only years away before a company like Hornby reintroduce DCC in an even easier plug and play way you can see it now plugging points into a cat 6 like cable however apart from the point motor you have signals semaphores and other actions but in a very module way. I know it’s not for the purists but I think there is still much simplification to be had railroadaster while functional is clumsy and SO DATED but who knows what the future might hold either way still aiming to get the first in my series of my model railway underway early this year but will be nothing as amazing as yours you have set the benchmark and made my life easier as. Ow I don’t have to search through hundreds of vintage 60,70,80s railway magazines for ways to do something’s. Anyways always stay safe and see you at the next one. FULL STEAM AHEAD LOL

Hi Charlie. There is a risk of UV degradation of xps, but inside the house the risks are low due to low UV levels. They would increase if you left your xps outside exposed to sunlight or if, for some unknown reason, you decided on a sun bed into the room.
@ChadwickModelRailway4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice Don, I’ll cancel the sun bed.

Charlie try a 4inch roller, when gluing down the underlay, with a strong PVA water mix, much quicker and even job than Paintbrush and no glue ridges you get with undiluted and a brush

just a thought: on the opposite of the last point, where you have installed the gizmos, you could put some sidings to store locos (thereby changing the last point to single or double slip).
