Primitive fishing teaches patience and the reward for that patience is a delicious meal that has greater value. Adding the abundance of wild fruit to the regional gastronomy makes the meal even that much better.
The fishing rod is made of a branch from a currant bush. The eyes of the rod are made of clay and tied to the branch with yucca cordage. The fishing line is made of 50% yucca fibers and 50% my hair. The sliding sinker is just a clay bead I made. And the hook is an ocotillo cactus thorn.
To cook the fish I created a friction fire using the bow drill method with unknown materials. I burned branches for about half an hour until there was a nice bed of hot coals then I made a grill by cross weaving split green willow branches. I placed the grill with the whole gutted fish over the coals and allowed it to cook for about twelve minutes. I flipped it over one time during the cooking process. It was delicious!

I liked the fact that this video was recorded in a biome other than the desert or jungle. There are new plants, animals and maybe agriculture would work better. Which biome do you prefer overall, Chad?
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 7 ай бұрын
This place is so close to heaven. Every biome has its special advantages and disadvantages. This one is great during the summer but it is all snow in the winter. My hut is great in the summer and fall but so cold in the winter. The desert is good in the cooler months as long as there is a reliable source of water nearby and edible foods. The jungle is warm year round but you deal with terrible humidity at times and lots of biting insects. I like the nomadic lifestyle best where one moves from place to place following the food and resources.

Thanks to Chad we can now appreciate more the fact that we can bring food to our mouth in such a convenient and easy way. Before throwing away that piece of meat that you don't like much, think about primitive humans and even modern ones that would consider that piece of meat a luxury.

Hello again my friend. Here's something you may or may not have tried. After gutting the fish...Collect wild green edibles and yes fruit if any are ripe. Wash the edibles and without drying stuff the inner cavity of the fish with them along with any fruit you may have. Cook just like you did in this video. When the fish is ready you have the protein from the fish and fresh greens to go with it. Depending on what type of wild edibles you have it may flavor the fish quite nicely. PS. - You already know that I'm all about fishing so yes I have played fishing clash before.I was pleasantly surprised at the realistic look of the fish. Until next time stay safe and healthy my friend !

Primitive fishing is definitely challenging. I always try to approach a stream from down stream and cast up and allow the bait to drift back down towards me as I slowly make my way up stream. Trout will lay facing and looking upstream when there is any current and will see you approach and spook if they see you coming. But sometimes it's just not possible and staying low and still as you did was great. I've caught me largest trout right in the white water where small waterfalls flow into a run. Just flicking my fly upstream and letting it flow downstream over the fall. The fish always smash a fly (or bait) really hard in these locations because if they don't they miss their chance at getting a feed. Looked like a great relaxing location 👍🏽
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 7 ай бұрын
Yes, those are good tips. I've fished this same stream before with a lot more success. I think it was just the time of year mostly. But I caught at least ten the last time (of course using modern fishing gear that time). But still I expected more bites on this outing. I still have to practice and hone my primitive fishing skills.
@RobsBushcraftandAdventures

One thing that might help your fishing is to put something in the water to attract the fish. Not sure exactly what would work but I have seen people throw many different things. From raw/rotten meat/fish too, pieces of bread, grubs, maggots, insects, prawns, spices, and so on. Maybe do some experiments to determine what kind of bait the fish are interested in? Or what scent they might like?

I recently saw javelina. That gave me hopes of eventually spearing one or something. No palo verde beans this year. The late spring rains knocked off all the flowers in May. Most people don't carry thermal imaging equipment--or even thermometers--when out hiking in the wilds, bushcrafting, or camping, so it's nice to know what a good rule of thumb for the temperature would be--in this case a thumbs-up for the thumb getting too quickly hot!

That's a Golden Trout. Only lives in waters over 9000 feet. Native to southern Sierra Nevada range of California. Fish hang out AR a "feeding station" in calmer water watching the moving water for food. That's like the place the first fish was caught. It's usually best to approach fish from downstream since their eyes are pointed upstream as they fight the current to remain stationary.

Yeah, a bit tedious and time consuming to make all that string. I actually have a net hanging in my hut. It just holds things.

5:02, you know, looking at the clay eyes has me thinking, what if you tried to make a reel from clay? with the edges flared out to keep the line centered, you could score one edge with notches, and make a pivoting lever against the body of the pole, to lock the reel in place. If that makes any sense?

I'm already ahead of you on that one. I've already started working on a design.

You might be better off setting up passive fishing lines. Just an idea. You could possibly make a fly fishing hook with grass, fur and the feathers you have

Have you considered trying to make a bone fish hook
@ChadZuberAdventures
@ChadZuberAdventures 7 ай бұрын
I have made a few but they failed to work when I tested them. It's really hard to carve a good hook from bone or shell. I've invested lots of time already without success.

Whether you choose to place the fishing ad at the start or finish of the video, watching it in between is not recommended for you 😊

Fishing in the very early morning or at dusk are the optimal times. Time to repurpose those trousers and get/make a new pair.

Hi Chad, hope youre doing great. I was just wondering how do these berries taste like? Are they any good or its more like when there's nothing better to eat/for vitamines?

I enjoy eating these manzanita berries. There are lots of different species of manzanita. Some are not worth the effort at all to eat raw but they are good for making tasty fruity teas. This species I like because it has a little tasty pulp that I can eat and enjoy immediately.

Yes you can but the skin will get scorched and there will be ashes on it. I prefer to use a grill so it's even better to eat.
