Chad for a thought on the door; you could make a rectangular prism frame that fits the size of the doorway and layer the frame with sheets of woven juniper bark, so instead of just using a mat of juniper bark, you can have a 2-4 inch thick door of it so that it provides insulation as well as protection from the wind. Recently watched a program on ancient building methods of Japan. They talked about how the bark roofs would soak in some moisture and release it in to the living space to help increase the humidity for the inhabitants during the winter months.

Someone may have made this suggestion already, i haven’t read through the 1.1K comments to know. The Navajo are known for spinning animal fibres for yarns. I could see you exploring this medium for socks, sweaters, gloves, beanies, blankets etc for these winters days. You may not necessarily need your own animals but may be able to trade with someone for a few fleeces of your chosen fibre for various projects. Just a thought. Love your content. So educational. You live in an amazing part of our planet. Thanks for sharing.

You don't need to go that big. Just go out in the nearest forest on a weekend day and practice some of the things he shows for a few hours and then go and sleep in your comfy bed. It's hard but I can truly say this is the most satisfying hobby I've taken up.

Hi Chad ..I absolutely enjoy your videos ... What I have noticed about your furnace is..since it is one one side of your Adobe hut .the wall on the other side of your heater doesn't benefit you that much....if you would have had your heater in the center....it would have kept your hut heated for a longer duration..and if chimney was a little taller ..it could serve as center support for the roof of your hut ..

Yes, you are right. That would be an excellent design. I think I would do that design on a new hut. I never that of that idea but I also wanted this hut to have plenty of open space inside. I think ideally I would have two huts - one for summer and one for winter. I'm going to remember your idea. Thank you!

Hey Chad. Man, that looked cold! Great work though, as heater and hut made a cozy place to retreat. Looking forward to seeing what you do for the door. I did note the gaps all around the hut between the roof and walls. May I suggest shredding some of that bark, balling it up, and stuffing it into the gaps? I believe this will make a big difference. Yey, snow! An important part of camping in the snow over here, is to get insulation from the ground. The best way to do this is to lay out thin branches or bushery in a layer of at least 5 cm, then put a cover like your pelt on top. This warms up the air in between the rushes, and creates a very good protection from the cold ground. The juniper bark might work for this, especially if you put down a layer of branches first. Insulation is key!

That fireplace is just sucking warm air out of the hut and sending it up the chimney as well. Not a great design for that style of habitation. Too inefficient.

Living all alone , close to nature , wild life , no tools , less dress & very hard life. It's amazing . One of my uncles was a honey collector in northern hilly area of Pakistan . He was a fearlessly man I have ever seen in my life . Day time he use to point out bee hives & late night in complete darkness , he use to go alone with hand made pine tree branches lantern with 2 buckets . I am still cannot believe when leopards were plenty in the hilly forest. Early morning still dark, he came bach with around 20 - 25 kgs of pure honey to sell it in Islamabad (Pakistan). It was indeed the purest precious honey .

Man, I got stuck out in the snow so much this year lol, didn't think I would survive, actually I freaked out and feared my end, just glad some Mexican culture knowledge helped me, wool blanket the entire winter very little use of fire, did make a bamboo container holding some beewax candles I made, Wich was my walk to town heater so i could regularly collect food for a few days. You're definitely getting it down better than me, but have to be sneaky and get around the laws of society for homeless people. So far I lost two camps because I was found, but here I am alive and well, but am planning to leave this city here in Madison TN to be the patch of woods. Yesterday got really cold tho, I wear dresses alit and it is not great for cold temps, but I have learned the body can adapt after an hour or two in it. So I'm fine and dandy. I found my leather hide shirt I made last year, it'll be handy when I camp the thorn vines again. One day I hope see the atalatal and primal hatchets I build in your video's. I finally learned how to draw the instructions down for both. But if interested I can send you the images on the axe build. And we all need you and cave man to do another workout. My friends are asking for that from you. Anyways I am coffeed up badly and must end this comment. I gotta get the yucca leafs today, just finished up a greenwood bow, Wich I have been dying to finish, time to string it. Stay primal, stay proud, thrive on the rock we all call home brother.

I knowingly stayed in the southern states this year. The Polar Vortex thing came out of the Northern Hemisphere, and absolutely dominated for a short time. I have been enduring heavy rain storms all winter. And for the first time in 21 years of traveling around America, I'm now carrying a 2 man tent. It's been truly a GOD send for me. It's hard to recover from an overlooked mistake to where you end up using 2 days to dry out again.

something i notice in a lot of these survival/cottage/wilderness home channels. They all seem to forget the purpose of hides/tapestries/curtains. most people think these were just decorations but they actually served a real purpose. They were a layer of insulation. Hung over doors, windows, and even parts of the wall to stop drafts, keep in warm air, and keep out cold. large hearth fireplaces made of stone would heat up and act as heat banks... then when the fire went out they could keep radiating heat while curtains and door covers would keep the drafts out and prevent heat loss. Even the 4 poster curtain beds had that point. they would create a smaller space inside the main room, that stayed warmer through the night and protected the sleeper from drafts.

I am Canadian so familiar with being uncomfortable because of cold. I had to put on a jacket just watching this. I was very impressed with the roof. It didnt have moisture but it did have gaps at the very peak? on the other hand I am thinking that Juniper bark swells when damp and helps seal the roof even more. Just a guess.

You Canadians know cold very intimately. I experience it only now and then really. The roof wasn't even finished yet. I needed more material but despite the gap the snow covered it up and sealed it well. I was really concerned that there would be a lot of leakage during the thaw. I was amazed that not a drop of water came through during the daytime thaw. There may be oils in the bark that help shed the water. I'm not really sure. Most people said it wouldn't work but it did.

For a door you could use some tightly woven thatch as a flimsy but relatively good door since it restricts airflow And if you wanted to make it sturdier just bind it to a stick frame to give it some structure

Hey Chad, a great episode. I'm glad the hut fulfilled its purpose, and glad the snow didn't come earlier in the season! But why don't you have more clothes? I understand wanting to pare down your material existence, but people in prehistory would have had all sorts of cold weather gear if they needed it. At the very least you should craft a top. It's weird to be half clothed. Maybe you could get some buckskin, try dyeing and add some beads you make yourself. It could be a good project. I suppose it depends what you are trying to achieve, you vs elements and environment disregarding accuracy or a more experimental archeological viewpoint. Personally I feel you tend towards the latter, apart from your sandals! Which are only a modern adaption of ancient technology anyway. So yea, I vote for some more clothes. Herds were plentiful in prehistory, so leather was in good supply.

As your hut is not able to store more wood than for a cold night, I think it would be a good idea to build a simple 'shed' to store some firewood out of the rain or snow. You could for example build two walks extending from the hut, cover with a juniper bark roof, and hold there a stock of firewood to last at least two or three days and nights in case of a snowstorm or prolonged rainy weather. Also I was not surprised the bark worked well as waterproof material. Here in Europe we mostly used hay or water reed to thatch the roofsin ancient times, but I have seen some use cedar bark to make roof tiles in Canada and the North of the USA. Another advantage is that it has some insulation capacities too.

It's good to hear that your roof is keeping the water out. I'm sure you'll work something out for a door to make things easier. Did you have enough time outside in the snow to look for tracks? Just curious to know if any critters were investigating your homestead at night. Have you seen any bamboo growing by the river? If so, split pieces could be used as gutters to collect water from the roof.

I don't cut my nails. Working outside in the dirt and mud naturally wears down the nails. I wish they would stay longer because I often cut the end of my fingers. I wash my hair with yucca leaves. A video takes between two days and several days to make. It depends what project I'm working on.

Absolutely sick behavior with that "toilet on a tray" in hut. I was at minus twenty degrees Celsius and snow up to my knees and always went outside for toilet activities, not only me but everyone I know. Here I see this behavior for the first time, I could not believe what i see here!

Chad, when I saw you collecting material for making a door ( I remember I suggested you before to make an axe for cutting and chopping ) with your bare hands, I can feel how painful it was as it was COLD outside. U can never have enough firewood. I once twisted my ankle and also I'm sure i broke a footbone that I couldn't walk at all 2 do my chores and I didnt have any crutches or tall sticks to help me hobble around so I basically stayed in bed 4 the whole month till I could put enough weight on it . Thankfully I had enough firewood inside and just out the door. Also plenty of food and water. My human waste bucket was also there. I also wrote my goodbye letter just incase. I was so thankful that my elders taught me to always ALWAYS prepare for the worst just incase and luckily it helped me to Survive. 😅👍 So I pass on the info ALWAYS B PREPARED JUST IN CASE Just like Insurance
