Constant experimentation with materials and techniques is essential to learn how to survive in any specific location. The acquisition of fish in a primitive manner is particularly challenging but with every attempt I learn a little more. Today Matty and I try fishing with a stick and string then Matty makes a simple wooden spear to stalk catfish in the shallow water. Dinner was good and the wine was even better. This series will be ongoing so be sure to stay tuned for the next video.

Camera: Nikon D7500 and GoPro Hero7 Black
Sound: Zoom H6
Editing: Final Cut Pro X on MacBook Air
Location: Parts Unknown
FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions):
Who films you?
Me. I travel alone, shoot, edit, upload, everything, all alone. On a few occasions I may be accompanied by a friend, but that has been very rare.
Do you stay out there permanently?
No, I usually stay out in a wilderness area for about a week and then hike out and return to a city for editing and uploading. I have family and other obligations to take care of as well.
How many cameras do you use?
Usually I use just one camera. When I have underwater scenes then I also use a GoPro camera. I get different angles by moving the camera around and repeating the action to create a more cinematic viewing experience for the audience.
Where is this place?
In order to protect the integrity of the natural landscape I prefer to be very vague about the locations I use. There are places that I used to visit that were so beautiful and untouched but the consequences of social media brought all kinds of people to visit and sadly some people do not respect nature and have badly damaged these places. Therefore I do not share locations.
Where did you get your sandals?
I first started wearing sandals on outdoor adventures in February 2014. I’m so glad that I did because wearing these Luna Sandals has really helped strengthen my feet. You can see their selection of adventure and running sandals at this link: www.lunasandals.com/?rfsn=102...
(Note: I receive an affiliate commission from any sales derived from clicking on the link above)
Do you workout?
Yes, I workout, but not in a gym. I have some weights that I use and also do a lot of bodyweight exercises. I also run and sometimes swim. I hike frequently to collect wild foods and to shoot these videos so I'm very active all the time.
Are you vegan or vegetarian?
I wish I could maintain my health on a primal diet that does not include animals but unfortunately that did not work well and I ended up with health problems as a result of those attempts. From my studies, observations of nature, and personal experience I have come to believe that the best diet for optimal human health is a primal diet (paleo).
Do you get lonely when you’re alone?
No, I don’t get lonely. I’m actually so busy shooting video, taking photos and doing so many other things like making cordage, cooking, weaving, etc. that I really don’t have time to think about my lonely condition. Sometimes when something profound happens on an adventure I can’t wait to share it with people, but other than that I do not get lonely.
How many languages do you speak?
My first language is English but I also speak fluent Spanish and Portuguese. I also speak very little Russian. I may soon begin learning more languages.
How old are you?
I was born in 1972. At the time of this video I was 49.
Where did you get the music in your videos?
This series is the first one that I am making all the music myself. I recently made a drum and maracas (rumba shaker). I am now using them to create the intro and ending music in my videos, but before in the past I have used royalty free music from several sources including KZbin. Sometimes I bought the music but usually it was free.

BUILD A NET, CHAD! A big one, across the entire stream. 100% coverage will get you fish! If you have ever studied a modern fishing hok, you will see it has a barb. That barb is so the fish doesn't slip off once hooked. When you do hook a fish, you will have to jerk the line to dig in the primitive hook, and also continuously maintain pressure on the line. in addition to the traditional poles you and Matty are using, I have found great success with a small 6 inch stick, split in the middle and notched on the lower end, and either simply held out over a deep bank, or dock. In such cool, deep areas by the bank you will often catch older, bigger fish.

huge fan of the channel, which is why i cannot stand by and watch you support a garbage product. yes, it is razor sharp out of the box, but it is not worth the hundreds of dollars they charge. they are of similar quality and use the same steel as kitchen knives sold at big box stores for under 20 USD. please reconsider this sponsorship, this company is not worth tainting your very good reputation.

Great, you caught your first fish. Something about STREAM fishing is that ALL fish in streams spook easily, and they can smell and hear you when they are DOWN STREAM. So you have to enter the stream well down from where you want to fish and fish UP stream. When you walk up on a stream, the fish can sense your approach, so you have to sneak up on the edge. Additionally, the fish, that I see, are small and have a small mouth, so your hooks have to small too. You would have better STRIKE luck using a bait that the fish usually eat, like a worm, cricket, or grasshopper. Your friend used some artificial baits, floating baits (dry flies and poppers) will work often when all other baits fail. Your homemade (fly) bait may work better without the weight. Don't feel bad here. We all have made the same mistakes. So, hey keep trying different methods. ;-)

Try NOODLING 4 the catfish along the shoreline underneath the banks of the creek. Catfish like to hide in holes underneath the banks. That's where you'll find the big ones that had those baby catfish fingerlings . Also use a worm a small piece of bait not a big piece like u were using otherwise they'll just steel it .Also add a short string of grass to piss them off. When a stranger enters there area they attack it and thereby hooking themselves. Good luck 🤞👌👍😃🐟

Gie gie gie, had a good chuckle at the end with the wine tasting... Nose, sip, pallet, spit, Mmmmmm and then all the sounds of pure pleasure following to the end.... Think you are a much better winemaker than fisherman... And that amphora is super beautiful. I grew up eating catfish (barbel).... We used to pull the tuff skin off with plyers, cut it into cubes, and soak it for a few hours in milk. That removes the taste of mud.. Dipped into flour and egg mix, into a pan with hot oil, untill brown, but still soft inside, wow... Missing those days... Looking forward to the next one, thanks Chad 👊🏻✌🏻

I think part of the problem is that your bait is too big. The fish can take a healthy bite out of it without getting anywhere near the hook. Either reduce the size of the bait or plant your hook more centrally within it. (This from someone who knows almost nothing about fishing, so take the advice for what it's worth!)

Another fishing tek you could use is bow fishing, but I dunno if there is any type of wood that'd be both springy and sturdy enough for a bow in your area. Also, you could probably smoke the fish over the chimney if you ever had an excess of it, another ancient way of making food keep longer, just like Matty's dried meat. Good catch, great video Chad!

Chad, hello, I'm coming back to you with advice, as I saw from the video, the river is not very big, you can make a filter for fish, it's very simple, you need to put in stones the width of the river, and make a narrow opening in which the fish will be swim, and after overcoming the barrier, a wicker willow trap will await her. I leave the forms, dimensions and implementation to you! good luck and all the success! Верю в вас!

The catfish can go up under the banks like frogs. Search around under the edge of the water and you will find that you can find places where it is "hollowed out" under the bank. You will find frogs and catfish in there.

I think there's only so much alteration he can legally do to the terrain. Even if it's on privately owned land, the western states have some pretty strict laws when it comes to interfering with river and creek beds, because it can mess too much with the spawning sites. Up here in WA, it's super-important not to mess up any salmon nests, since that carries a rather hefty fine from what I've heard. (My interest was in what you can/cannot do when gold-panning in a riverbed when I ran across those warnings, so I'm not completely sure what the laws are regarding fishing & riverbed disruptions. I'd imagine they overlap, though!)

@@ladyofthemasque No one is really sure where Chad is from. What we do know is that it is somewhat remote and has limited cell signal. We do know that it is in North America which is a vastly large area to cover. It has snowed at his site and get cool in the winter. Which does not rule out Mexico. It could be New Mexico, Nevada, Idaho and a few other states down and around those areas. Its not likely CA though. Streams and water rights are debatable on what you can and can not do. If you own the land to which the stream is on and depending on your water rights you can cut the water flow off 100%, Redirect it to where you want or take as much as you need or want. Just really depends. There are streams that are not really streams which are snow pack run off that move all over the place every year and new areas open up.

Catfish taste like the water you take them from. As this one was in a clear rocky bottomed running stream, it did not have that muddy taste like some in ponds full of sediment made distasteful as they feed near the bottom. Catfish can survive in mud with very little water. A catfish found in the mud can be made tasty by letting it live in a bucket of clear water for a few days before it is consumed.

Try fishing in the morning or early evening because that's when the fish feed.

If there are catfish there, you better call hannah and Jeff barron to come out and do a collaboration video. They can help you with handfishing for them 😁

Who doesnt like some catfish? I think of them more as a fatty fish than a dirty fish. That is like turning your nose up to crayfish.
