Growing up in martial arts or participating in any "sports competition that is way more real" the first thing you learn is that the rules are there to prevent the real effects of a fight. Thats the point ...rounds ..refs ..points ect. Even in MMA which is as close as you can get to "real" fighting they don't allow as series of things you would do in a real fight. So again I ask ...why would he enter a formal comp if nothing he is telling you he would actually do is legal?
@gdavis2bn

@Alex Amaya Lol that's not true, there are several champs that have gotten their ass whooped in the streets. So winning a controlled fight means nothing. I guess if he wanted people like you to approve he would have cause that's all trophies are for ..to get approval from spectators and those that don't matter. He already had success in his schools and movies. Haters come with the territory. I personally wouldn't waste my time either. Unless I could go directly to them and show them first hand. But different strokes for different folks I suppose.

@@gdavis2bn Yup true. Most of his movesets are not allowed in any formal competition. His special moves like manipulating minds,, sonic scream, seeing the near future to counter his opponents, and his faster then light punches and kicks. Man his feints leave sonic booms in the air. Bruce was an actor, with literally zero fights to his name besides legends of "street fights". Put it this way, Gene Lebell grabbed him and held him in a fireman's carry for about 5 mins, Bruce was helpless, because he couldn't fight. When fighters with championship backgrounds have said Bruce would have beaten them guys who actually knew him and sparred him I don't think it's accurate to say he was a whimp who couldn't fight.
@adasga
@adasga 5 жыл бұрын
Because Bruce Lee was not a prize fighter. But if there was a guy today with his own philosophy of fighting that was not a prize fighter but had sparred Conor, Khabib, Cormier, Lomachenko and GGG and all would admit "he would have kicked my ass in a fight" i wouldn't say that dude can't fight. It is a fact that we have not much footage of Lee outside of his movies, BUT in my opinion the fighters that sparred him are the more credible source of his abilities than searcing for a win loss ratio from a tournament.
@adasga

When you someone like Jim Kelly one of the most decorated karate champs of the time saying Lee sparred with champions and was basically untouchable it is more credible than some dude on the internet saying "nope he never sparred with anyone". First of all, he was from seattle and Hollywood Hong Kong. Secondly, there are a lot of guys who credit techniques like the hook kick or reverse jab to Bruce Lee or a lot of them just don't even know where if came from. Now I'm not saying he was necessarily the best but if you ever pick up one of his books his principle is simple: apply the closest weapon to the closest target to minimize energy use and bring down an opponent quicker. You obviously don't grasp the concept of how fast he really was either everyone thinks his 1 inch punch was just a straight punch. All punches are different, yet the same. So are kicks. Maybe try listening to the man instead of the junk before you decide for yourself. Thirdly, I am 5'1 and 110 pounds, and have been able to apply his principles in real fights against up to 5 opponents all bigger than me. Now, perhaps my background of training combined with mixing where they didnt have a background came into play but these comments are very stretched out and I think if Bruce Lee were around today we WOULD see him in the cage, going around from arena to arena because he could and he was a badass.

You start developing the right mindset. It's not like he had philosophy but no implementation.thats just silly .philosphys are a result of immense training and a profound experience.

Bruce invented jeet kune do and trained with all the world champions back then, his book jeet kune do art of tau has a lot of grappling moves, he did armbars/triangle choke/gelatin choke..., not to mention that his house was like a gym...

I know the armbar your'e talking about, the point of the comment was that bruce was using real techniques not bullshit. He hadn't mastered everything yet but he died young and was having to teach himself a lot of what he was doing because MMA gyms didn't exist back then. You have to remember there weren't BJJ gyms everywhere and he could just look things up on the internet. He's famous because he did it in the era when you were basically following maps of legends about techniques draped in mystery.

@@suntzu7727 "Physical attributes". He was slight and fast, and had a good range of movement. But he also almost crippled himself doing a fairly rudimentary weight lifting exercise. Hardly the ultimate specimen. You get good at fighting by training to fight and then fighting people. We've no actual footage of Bruce Lee ever fighting any properly trained fighter. Hence why Chael isn't wrong. Also, Bruce's "philosophy" was a rip off of old Chinese philosophy and Jiddu Krishnamurti, dumbed down for a juvenile audience of the time. He simply repackaged and sold it as his own. I do actually respect the guy, he was a talented actor and a good businessman. Pretending to fight is a better way to make money that actually having to fight and get hurt and exposed. But there's no evidence he was a good fighter.

What you have never seen is anyone who was just as confident in their own propaganda. Let's say if you over talk, overly out brag,boast my skills and credentials louder than everyone else in the room and you have just one person with you helping you spread your propaganda and then your glamour begins to draw the crowd then in most everyday common circles no one of the average folks will want to challenge you and even if one rises to the challenge his confidence he's questioning because your glamour has overshadowed his abilities and he will second quess himself and make mistakes and loose the challenge. But if I am not fazed by your talk then your mental warfare will not work especially because I know that I have kicked ass in real life circumstances and overcame the odds and been proven victorious time after time, I have been hit for real without pads in real fights on the street, in the bar, on the field etc etc etc then you are now facing the fight of your life because your glamour irritates me and your bragging makes my desire to shut down not just you but the falseness of you and your fables because I looked into your eyes and see that all of your talk is a fabrication and not reality and I pick you up and run you through the wall and then German release suplex through the coffee table then once again through the entertainment center then I apply the rear naked choke long enough to weaken your blood flow and quickly transition into the crippler cross face which really is a painful maneuver and I mean painful because I have used it in real life situations and left grown men crying on the ground now your glamour has been covered in shit and shines no more but just for shits and giggles after you have tapped out I jump from the couch and macho man Randy Savage elbow drop you square in the sternum dead center adding insult to injury now I have totally killed the man the myth and what legend. I'm agnostic about the whole thing. I think it's a touchy subject because people are sentimental about Lee, Norris , etc. because they grew up watching these guys and they have been an inspiration to a lot of today's MMA athletes. I know I myself as a child loved all these guys. They are in a sense people's child hood heroes. Had UFC existed back when these guys were in their prime who's to say they wouldn't have been able to adapt and had some success? It's hard to say one way or another, but I think Chael had some valid points. Chael is a legit fighter and has fought some of the baddest of the baddest and knows how it feels to lock up and be in a clinch with some of the most dangerous guys on the planet. Anyone having been in so many real brutal grappling matches and risked death numerous times.. such as Chael. Their opinion does carry a certain amount of weight. IMO anyway.

Simple question: Where are the videos of Bruce Lee fighting people properly? Answer: They don't exist because he did;t fight anyone properly ever. That's what Chael is basing it on. He has probably met guys like Judo Gene too who knew all about Bruce and worked with him. I'd say Chael probably has a better idea about Bruce Lee than 99.99% of his delusional fanboys. And it's hypocritical to criticise Chael for not knowing Bruce, yet almost none of his fanboys never met Bruce or actually ever saw him fight. But they still think he went round destroying people in street fights or behind the scenes on move sets. Judo Gene, by the way, told Ronda Rousey to not do MMA but go straight to the movies it was easier to make money as a stunt person on a movie than to have to actually fight people. That's the mentality guys like Gene and Bruce have: pretending to look tough on screen is smarter than trying to actually fight people and then getting exposed.

Considering that the number of people who witnessed him fight was at least in the thousands, and that numerous sources confirm that he was a symbol of celebrity action movie stars, who constantly attracted challengers in street fight scenarios; many people wanted to get a notch on their belt from beating Bruce lee. According to virtually all firsthand accounts, he never lost a confrontation. (And before people start claiming that those are all just myths, stories, and legends, it s worth noting that a lot of those eyewitnesses and first generation students are still alive, incidentally) I m not saying that Bruce Lee was definitely the greatest fighter of all time, but where there is that much smoke, there has to be some kind of fire...

Mr Rhombus It depends on the context. However, your example is a pretty poor one, as Unidentified Flying Objects obviously do exist, the fact in question is whether they are experimental aircraft or alien in origin. I m not a big believer in intelligent life on other planets, but it s obvious that UFO s do exist. To compare using your example on more similar terms, if 100,000 people out of a city of 800,000 say that they have all seen unidentifiable aircraft at one time or another, would you conclude that they were all either delusional or lying, or would you conclude that it was highly likely that they saw what they report that they saw? He was also a boxing champion in his youth so he proved himself in the ring, but then geared his art towards Street fighting and no rules. I agree the other people you mentioned are wimps like seagal, van damme and norris but gene lebell had the first nhb fights in the West and proved the power of grappling against striking when he took boxer milo savage down and choked him. Gene lebell was no wimp and neither was Bruce Lee.

Yeah but it's easy to look fast when you get multiple takes, choreograph the fight scenes to make other people look slow and get them to stand there while you pretend to hit them..... Point I am making is people are using the pretence of movies to assess a guys functional fighting skills. It's bonkers. It's like people arguing that Tom Hanks could beat Usain Bolt in a foot race because "look at his Hanks moved in Forrest Gump".

Bruce Lee had at least one real fight with a karate master, Yoichi Nakachi. Also, we know Bruce Lee sparred with karate experts, and we know what karate experts said about him… In 1960 at age 19, Bruce fought Yoichi Nakachi, a Japanese black belt in Karate and Judo. Yoichi had pursued Bruce for weeks, wanting a match, and they had finally agreed to fight on a handball court at a local YMCA. Ed Hart timed the fight, which lasted just 22 seconds. (According to Doug Palmer the actual time was 11 seconds but Hart doubled it, not wanting to embarrass Yoichi!). Bruce hit Yoichi with a flurry of punches, then kicked him in the head, knocked him out cold, and fractured his skull. Yoichi ended up in the hospital. "This guy was a black belt in Karate and Judo," said Jesse Glover, Lee's first student. "He was fast, and his technique was excellent." The Japanese fighter arrived in his all-white karate gi with a black sash around his waist. Lee wore street clothes. Yoichi assumed a karate stance. Lee stood with his hands at his sides. Yoichi threw a kick. Lee parried it, then all hell broke loose. "Bruce straight punched the guy, landing punch after punch, all the way across the room," recalls Ed Hart. "The guy was punching back, but his punches just weren't getting there. He came off the wall and tried to grab Bruce, but Bruce spun him and hit him with both hands - one in the face and the other in the chest - and the guy flew through the air and landed on the floor on one knee." Lee closed the distance rapidly, then launched a front kick that ending up flush on Yoichi’s face with such force that he flipped over backward, ending up on his chest. "I hollered, 'Stop!' Glover says, "and the guy was out cold. He looked like he was dead." Most of Bruce Lee’s other interactions with Karate experts were more of the sparring variety. And we know what Karate experts who sparred and trained with Bruce said about him… Chuck Norris won six consecutive middleweight Karate championships and opened a chain of Karate schools, but he became a student of Bruce Lee. Norris told Black Belt, “The truth is Lee was a formidable opponent with a chiselled physique and technique… Lee was lightning fast, very agile and incredibly strong for his size.” There is a 1973 handwritten letter from Chuck Norris to Bruce Lee, on Norris’s official letterhead, in which Norris admitted that he was a student of Bruce Lee and said it was a privilege to learn from him. I take the letter to be a lame apology for Norris making public statements in which he tried to make himself out to be Lee’s equal or superior and said they were training together rather than Lee teaching him. Other people may have different interpretations of the letter, but it leaves no doubt that Norris was Lee’s student and that he learned from him in a student-teacher relationship. Here is the letter, followed by a photograph of the handwritten letter on Norris’s stationary. The original letter is in the possession of Dan Inosanto and can be viewed at the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts in Marina Del Rey, California. “Dear Bruce, Just a note to wish you great success on the movie and to clarify any misinterpretations you have heard about our training together. I have told hundreds of people I have trained with you. My ego is not such that I am ashamed of it. It was a privilege learning from you. One thing I never do is mention you in the same breath with Kung Fu. I mention you as a master of the Martial Arts because of your proficiency in all of them, so I always say you are a master of your own Art. Anyway that is enough of that. Bruce, I hope 1973 is a great year for you and give my regards to Linda and the kids. Take care, Chuck” William Cheung said Bruce Lee defeated Chuck Norris and that Norris became Lee’s student after he was defeated. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who took lessons from Bruce Lee, said that when Chuck Norris and Bruce Lee sparred, Norris’s face look like an apple. Mike Stone was nicknamed the “Animal” and he won a record 91 consecutive matches in Karate tournaments. Mike Stone also became a student of Bruce Lee. Joe Lewis was nicknamed “the Muhammad Ali of Karate” and has been called "the greatest Karate fighter of all time." But he too became a student of Bruce Lee. Herb Jackson said the great Joe Lewis “couldn’t touch” Lee when they sparred. According to Jake May, in an online discussion, Dan Inosanto told friends that he witnessed Joe Lewis and Bruce Lee spar and Joe was helpless to hit Bruce. And Joe seemed to confirm this himself… Joe Lewis, voted by top fighters and promoters as the greatest karate fighter of all time, was awed by Lee’s speed and ability. During a video demonstration of Lee’s speed punch, Lewis that he couldn’t hit Bruce with it because he went into “zen mode” and “you couldn’t hit him with a bullet, he was so fast.” The great Joe Lewis admitted that he was unable to hit Bruce. I have placed a link to the video at the bottom of this page. In a video Joe Lewis said, “He had blinding speed, especially with his hands.” Joe Lewis has a video on KZbin titled “What Bruce Lee Taught Me.” Now he teaches others what Bruce Lee taught him. Why would all-time great martial artists like Joe Lewis, Chuck Norris and Mike Stone seek training from someone who “was not a fighter”? It makes no sense to say that Bruce Lee was “just an actor.” Expert witness testimony is accepted in courts, but Bruce Lee’s detractors deny the testimony of experts and ignore other evidence when they claim he was “just a celebrity” and “not really a fighter.” Again, why would the greatest martial artists of his era go to Bruce Lee for training, if he wasn’t a great martial artist and a great fighter? That would be like going to Sylvester Stallone for boxing lessons - it makes no sense whatsoever. From what I understand, Chuck Norris studied under Bruce Lee for two years. Surely great martial artists would have recognized if their teacher didn’t know more than they did, and would have canceled the lessons as a waste of time and money. As noted in the comments by Esosa: “All these guys, including Norris and Lewis, paying him his due as the real deal, what more do ya want? I mean, I’m a karateka myself and I know about their humongous egos. So if these guys were willing to train under Lee…?” In the comments Dave Owens observed: “A buddy of mine is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He later went on to study Lee's Jeet Kune Do. He said it's the difference between tiddly winks and chess.” Dave later added: “He summed it up in that Bruce Lee took every single martial art attack from every discipline and then he figured out a counter for each one. It resembles nothing else. There aren't too many Jeet Kun Do studios because it's so stinking hard to master! You just about have to get a black belt in each discipline before you can even be a white belt in JKD.” It also bears noting that Bruce Lee’s detractors have a timing problem. They make it sound as if Lee had no martial arts credentials and that, after his death, other martial artists tried to “piggyback” on his fame as an actor. But that makes no sense because the best-known martial artists studied under Bruce Lee before he became famous for his movies. If they had all piggybacked after the fact, the detractors might have a case, but Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis and Mike Stone became students of Lee’s after his demonstrations at the 1967 Long Beach Tournament, based on what Lee was doing in the martial arts world, not on his future fame in martial arts movies, which was unknowable at the time. Jim Kelly won Karate tournaments and he, too, trained under Bruce Lee. Jim Kelly said Bruce Lee was: "Untouchable" "the Michael Jordan of martial arts" "the Greatest" "a level above everybody else" Hayward Nishioka was a Judo and Karate expert who told John Little that Bruce Lee was “on a different level” and that “you couldn’t grab him.” Tsutomu Ohshima, the great sensei, observed that Bruce Lee made Japanese karateka look foolish. Mitoshi Uyehara, the founder of Black Belt Magazine, told John Little than “none of them [the other martial artists he knew] were at Bruce Lee’s level.” Bruce Lee performed demonstrations at the George Dillman Karate Institute in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1967. George Dillman, a karate instructor and Muhammad Ali bodyguard, later admitted that he was unable to compare with Bruce. They sparred and Dillman was unable to hit Lee. Skipper Mullins was a Karate expert who was friends with Joe Lewis. Mullins taught martial arts in the Marines and also to FBI agents. He won seven championships and had a career tournament record of around 1,100 wins with only 15 losses. According to his brother Dan Mullins, Skipper Mullins said that he would choose Bruce Lee in any street confirmation and that Lee was a phenomenal martial artist. Bruce Lee did demonstrations at the 1967 Long Beach International Karate Tournament, which was hosted by Ed Parker, a Karate master who taught Karate to Elvis Presley. During his demonstrations at the Long Beach Karate Tournament, Bruce Lee beat Dan Inosanto in an exhibition match (which was recorded). Inosanto later became a Bruce Lee student. Jim Kelley recalled Bruce beating everyone, and the participants included names like Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis, Jhoon Goo Rhee, Ed Parker, Vic Moore and himself. As further evidence we have the fact that some of the biggest names in martial arts soon became students of Bruce’s after the Long Beach Tournament. In September 1967, Bruce Lee began training martial arts champion Mike Stone. In October 1967, Chuck Norris became a student of Bruce Lee. In January 1968, Bruce began giving private lessons to Karate champion Joe Lewis.

Damn Chael! Some shots being fired today!! For all those getting offended by his comments on Bruce... this is typical Chael why are you surprised? When he says he's never lost a round or some other outlandish comment we all laugh and applaud and talk about it. It doesn't mean what he's saying about Bruce is necessarily true but it's vintage chael p sonnen. That's why we love him!

Lord Chael, you just passed my exit Btw...props on not just your flawless lane change, technique (I caught it) but your most excellent half-lotus cruising position (I use it as well-provides much plexus relief) Also while on cruise control in the truck, you may go full-lotus on a longer voyage, but only if you're on I-5 and only if you're an Oregon Gangster.
