The Loy Krathong festival is celebrated all over Thailand while her sibling festival of Yipeng is celebrated only in the north (former Lanna kingdom). The Lanna calendar system has a different calculation of Yipeng day apart from Loy Krathong's of the central (Siam Kingdom). But people in the north are smart. The don't just surrender their calendar day. Instead they extended their Yipeng festival from a day into the whole duration between the Loy Krathong day and the real Yipeng day yet included the floating of Krathong in the river as an addition into their Yipeng lantern floating ceremony. That's why Thai tourist from all regions popularly come to the north to celebrate, taking both sibling festivals at the same time.

During the Yi Peng Lantern Festival in Chiang Mai, the mass release of lanterns typically takes place on the full moon night of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar, which usually falls in November. The main release event generally occurs around 8:00 PM, but exact times can vary. It’s advisable to arrive early to secure a good viewing spot and enjoy the festivities leading up to the release.

The correct way to release a sky lantern is TO WAIT until it really want to go and when released the lantern should shooting up like a rocket, so that it could reduce the chance of it getting stucked in the nearby trees and cause some fire. In the video, when you relaese your sky lantern, it still hovering a bit not rocket shooting to the sky, which is wrong and a bit dangerous.
