Set small goals for yourself and celebrate when you achieve them. I used to procrastinate a lot finishing high school and starting college and that added to my stress tremendously. If I had said to myself September 2011 that I would have to make 370 videos by today I would have never started this channel. I still feel overwhelmed at times working full time and doing KZbin. Time management is everything and incremental goals. I hope you do great in your studying...and life:)

Mr. Tarrou is amazing at explaining the intuition and the calculation that is mathematics. If you ever wonder why teachers want you to show your work or your steps, it's because math isn't entirely about the answers but about learning to think logically and abstract. Because of Tarrou and my own interests in math I have enjoyed looking at the world more mathematically

If y is a function of x then dy/dx is also a function of x, called the first derivative of the function y. d/dx is an "operator" which means it is something that you apply to functions to get new functions. When you apply the operator d/dx to fhe function y you get the function dy/dx, the function which is the first derivative of y.

With respect to x means that x is the changing variable you are trying to find the rate of change (or dy/dx) for.

Discovery is can be a very effective way to learn material and as teachers we are encouraged to more of this method of teaching. I don't especially like this way of teaching. After the lecture if there are concepts that were not thoroughly understood, some students get to reinforce their own learning by teaching and helping their fellow students. Teaching can also be very effective way of learning. And of course on a video, I must lecture because there is no interaction...besides comments:)

Tarrou's Calculus Lesson for 9/10
@leozhang13409 жыл бұрын
Mr. Tarrou, I didn't take calculus yet but how do you know the derivative of a function just by eyeballing it? when I looked at your derivative definition video, you went through solving the derivative with a long formula(x+h, I think).
@profrobbob9 жыл бұрын
After torturing my students with how to find the derivative using the definition of a derivative, mostly to drive home the idea the derivative is slope, we start learning derivative formulas to speed up the process. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJ_UlmWVn9lrd8U
@leozhang13409 жыл бұрын
ProfRobBob so there are quo, pro, chain, and power rules. are there add and subtract rules too? outta curiousity. if so, do u have videos on them? if not, then ignore this last question. thanks. i already subbed you
@Incognit07776 жыл бұрын
Prof. Rob Bob, could you explain in simple terms why there are technically 2 functions when you have a polynomial to an nth power? I can't really understand this. At first I thought that the power rule would apply to the whole polynomial as well.

for the example: square root of 4-t.....do you have to take the derivative of the inside (4-t) which would be -1 which would also cause the final answer to be negative?? just need some clarity, some of these chain rule problems are tricky

Yes, that is why there are red -1's all over that example because I forgot to do that while talking through the example!!! They can be tricky, yes:)

I really really wish you were my calculus teacher :/ my teacher makes us do group work together to figure out problems before actually teaching us how to do them. Then he have the groups "attempt" to explain there reasoning. We then have to answer each and every question in perfect grammatical order or he marks us. I didn't show work for one step on a problem and he took off most of the points even though I ha the right answer :(

Hey, I'm new to your videos. I was going to ask if you respond to personal messages/comments? The reason I ask is because I have a couple math questions that I'm stuck on
@profrobbob8 жыл бұрын
I (Mrs Tarrou) reply to most of the general comments but Mr Tarrou teaches full time and is currently working on closed captioning his lessons, with any spare time he has, which sadly leaves no time left for math questions on line...so sorry:( Most teachers at his school offer after school help, you might start there:)
