ProfRobBob Hi, I cannot seem to find your explicit functions. Where can i find them
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 7 жыл бұрын
Taking the derivative of any function where the dependent variable, usually y, is solved for you are doing an explicit derivative. Implicit just means the variables are mixed up together. Here is my entire Calculus 1 playlist, www.profrobbob.com/calculus

I learned about flipping the +- when multiplying by -1 from watching college professor teach. I like the idea of rewriting the ellipse into to separate functions. It would add more written steps but would make the explanation clearer.

I've been watching your videos for extra help through college algebra, trig, and now in calculus. I wish more mathematics teachers/professors could be as good. I'm having a difficult time learning from my current calc professor, but your videos are getting me through it. Thank you!

You're welcome Kyle Ash and THANK YOU for being such a loyal subscriber too! I never get tired of hearing how helpful these videos are to students and that some of you have now followed me for all 3 years...it's a lot of after hours work (in comparison to the subscriber growth) to make these videos in addition to teaching full-time but comments like yours always remind me "Why" I continue! Maybe someday education videos on KZbin will get equal support to entertainment ones. I realize it just mimics everyday life, where sports figures and actors make more money than the teachers responsible for getting them there:( Don't get me wrong, I LOVE teaching but it is becoming a less sought after job and harder and harder to find great teachers.

Of course! Actually, nearly our entire group got an A- on the midterm, and I credit your videos. As far as watching the videos, we either play them on the phone as we go up to class for review through the stereo system, or we get together after a class to watch them. Our class is four days per week, and admittedly is getting rather old. I have gladly subscribed, you make the entire process much easier.

I hate to admit this but I have not looked at Calculus since September when I made my last video. I have yet to teach Calc at my school, but I have wanted to for a long time. After my PreCalc class and Stats was done last year I started to reteach Calc to myself after 17 years and made these videos. But I am teaching 4 subjects this year and I have had to stop Calc & focus on Geometry vids. I don't remember the exact issue but, I had problems sometimes when I didn't switch those signs.
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 11 жыл бұрын
It is a little late now but I was watching the entire video again refreshing myself now that I am done with my Geometry videos and I am getting ready to teach Calculus next year. Did you understand why the signs had to be flipped as I finished the comparison between implicit and explicit differentiation?

Thank you for such motivation, I even looked up some of your news stories and just you as a person, well you and your wife of course lol (I know behind every great man is a great woman shaking her head :P) but you're an inspiration and I also agree that with technology spreading that handwriting is losing its impact, but I also think through influences like you and people watching like me spreading the word and showing that I'm getting better and better at education and it's "on my own" (with assistance of course) and my handwriting as well, with that being spread around I truly believe that what little does get written down in the future should be elegant and beautiful and have more meaning because it IS losing steam, but NOT losing it's emotional conveyance if you will. Keep up the inspiring good work and I will keep supporting you, spreading the word, and I'm also getting some people together for a donation :) not to spoil the surprise.. And there will be a viral math video one day, I know it!!! BAM!!! Thank you Sir and have a wonderful day and a wonderful life! :)

Was that a Ferris Bueller reference I heard? ("Nine times...") Thanks for your videos. I'm 41 and have been taking math classes at community college for the past two years. I'm currently up to Calc 1 but these are the first math classes I've taken since my first time through college back in the 1990s. Great videos Professor! The only channel I look for math! But I'd like to point something out. In your first examples where you wrote "d/dx 3X^2 y^3", it looks like you're taking the derivative of (3x^2*y^3), since you put no parenthesis. Might confuse someone that doesn't know the product rule.

I am struggling with the concept of notations when to use d/dx or dy/dy, in the middle & last answers, why did the notations turn into y'? Why couldn't the middle answer just been 6x+3y^2 without the y' and in the last answer 3x^23y^2+6xy^3 or 9x^2y^2+6xy^3 without the y'?

I know that when using Implicit Differentation, I use the the Chain Rule for the y part of the function. So why do we have to use the Chain Rule for y?
@profrobbob
@profrobbob 10 жыл бұрын
You are technically always doing the chain rule. x^2+y^2=10, derivative 2x(dx/dx)+2y(dy.dx)=0 but dx/dx is 1 so your final answer is 2x+2yy'=0 :D Hope this helps clear up your question and thank you for watching.

kekekiwi Passed down from a retiring teacher. Thank You! My kids here would miss me, but if you tell everyone at your school to use my videos for additional study help, students, teachers, head of the math department, post my flyer in the student tutor center, then when EVERYONE on campus know who #ProfRobBob is, then I could make a guest appearance if we're ever in Alabama...BAM!!! So get busy...and remind them ALL to SUBSCRIBE...we're looking for 100,000 subscribers by 2015!

I need help! I have two problems I do not understand and I think I am suppose to do implicit differentiation but am unsure due to how it is worded so here goes,and hopefully someone gets back to me soon... ok. If y= square root of a^2 - x^2, show that: x(a^2-x^2)d^2/dx^2=a^2dy/dx. If y is a function of x, and z=xy show that: x^2 dy/dx=x dz/dx -z. I really do not want just an answer. I want to know how to do the problem. I have tried to work it a couple of different ways and can not figure out how to show that is what it is equal to. Please help!

ahhh, technically the denominator is the same but you switch the signs when you multiplied by -1, I understand completely. This is an example of what my College Professor would skip while leaving half of the class wondering what just happened. Glad you have a passion for teaching and a talent for it. Don't quit showing every step. That's a part of why we're all here!
