Sebastian Al Hares yes and by suspension leaning backwards im pretty sure hes talking about the angle caster of the suspension. which is usually positively angled (this makes the suspension sit at more of an angle than just 90 degrees from the road) think of it like positioning the suspension so that the bottom is closer to the front of the car than the top (and switch those for negative caster)

Nope. They’ve worked their way up through the formula pyramid and dealt with all sorts of variables from one formula to the next. These guys (and gals) have gone from no gearbox, no aerodynamic downforce, no abs, no traction control, no drs, no kers etc etc and then added manual gears, clutch under their feet, clutch on steering wheel, and multiple variations of ground effect and aero, all sorts of steering wheel controls and so on. This is a tiny part of a much more complex beast, if they are at F1 standard then they are arguably some of the best racing drivers in the world, this is just another variable that they’ll add to their list of things to change.

That's nonsense. If they don't lose time with it (e.g. in a quali outlap, race formation lap, or behind the SC), they'll wave around just like the others, because at low speed that's how you really heat up the tires. This system is obviously meant to help with the setup, and to keep the tires warm during the race, in too long straights, at normal racing speed, without actually losing that much time with the waving. So no, you won't see Hamilton and Bottas constantly pulling and pushing their steering wheel.

Is there a loophole in the 2021 regs that would allow this implementation to continue? dual racks with a CVT type linkage allowing for just adjustment of the steering rate separately for each side? the side effect of which is to adjust the toe angle. Maybe dual variable rate racks with this system basically just adjusting the center point?

@@anidiotinaracingcar4874 Is there even an occasion where neutral steering or positive ackerman would be viable for F1? Considering the immense loads the tires are always under I'm just asking out of curiosity as I'm not an expert :p Edit: And I meant it as in regular circumstances when setting up a car not taking into account the DAS system
@jeremymercer5655
@jeremymercer5655 4 жыл бұрын
@@fridolfgranq There are two things at play Typically a tire that has more load on it will have optimal grip at a higher slip angle than a tire with less load on it. So in a fast right turn, the left tire has a lot more load on it and gets optimal grip at a higher turning angle than the inside tire. So F1 cars actually want more turning angle on the outside tire in the turn for fast turns. Also, a F1 car typically runs static toe out to help with turn in. The anti-Ackerman then helps straighten the tires out in the middle of the turn. Positive Ackerman would be used if all the turns were hairpins, where the difference between inside and outside turning radius is more significant, and the lateral acceleration is less keeping the tires more evenly loaded from left to right.

F1 cars apply the concept of anti-ackerman to their cars. Basically, they have their outside tire pointing in more than the inside tire. This is because the difference in slip angle of the inside and outside tires is much higher throughout a corner, making it beneficial (only at higher speeds) to employ anti-ackerman.
@RodrigoSantos-jl3pc
@RodrigoSantos-jl3pc 4 жыл бұрын
@@texarcana2002 race cars use anti-ackermann, which means they run the outside tire on a tighter steering angle than the inside one. This is because at mid-corner under high lateral acceleration, the lateral load transfer is huge, and the outside tire is much more loaded than the inside (and hence can generate maximum lateral force on higher slip angles). The lightly loaded inside tires, on the other hand can start slipping too much (and lose lateral force) with a small slip angle . So it's more benefitial to run the outside tire with tighter steering angles.
@texarcana2002
@texarcana2002 4 жыл бұрын
@@RodrigoSantos-jl3pc Miguel Bigott That's doesn't seem to make sense, as having the inner tire pointed in essence in severe toe-in (if I understand anti-ackerman properly), would create a severe amount of scrub angle. Unless a-a is an exaggeration of what Ackerman is trying to achieve, dialing in more toe-out as the steering wheel is turned, which still scrubs the hell out of the inside tire. I. Am. So. it isn't banned because the FIA doesn't like it, it's not allowed next year because the rules about the movement of the steering wheel got more precise. This could just be the reason Mercedes came up with this idea.
@tobias5740
@tobias5740 4 жыл бұрын
Marc Priestley explained very well why a ban is justified. When every one implements the system, it just levels the playing field. The teams would need to add extra time and money to develop, for no actual benefit. This is especially bad for teams with more limited resources. It‘s essentially limiting their budget even more. The innovation/outsmarting effect will be gone next year. It‘s a fantastic curveball Mercedes threw the other teams right now, through innovation, they stay ahead. But they, and all other teams, need to come up with more! Allowing DAS for 2021 would just be a hindrance for further innovation.

It's mostly to do with how changing the toe angle changes the rest of the suspension geometry and how that affects the front ride height and rake angle. It's not likely to have much effect on overall downforce with the current over-body airflow designs but when switching to an under-body, ground effect focussed car for the 2021 season it could cause safety issues. If the system failed then you could potentially have a situation similar to a DRS flap refusing to shut where the driver is expecting a certain amount of grip entering a corner but turning in to suddenly find they've got way less and there's nothing they can do but crash.

@@fpvillegas9084 Yes, but its likely that minimum and maximum angles are set by the mechanics beforehand so the drivers dont have to think. Pull the wheel back as far as it will go on the straights and vice versa for the corners. Having them fidle with 0.1degree tire angles for the corners makes not much sense to me since by the time they will have adjusted well enough they will be at the next corner already. That seems impracrical to me.

@@luuk341 OK, but the timing of the activation of the DAS will still depend on the driver. Just like when they fiddle with brake bias and LSD. Hamilton and Bottas sure would have a lot on their plate during qualifying and the race.

You should also add the rear axle toe it's very important in the whole equation. Generally in F1 car you want your front axle change the direction a minuscule MS later than rear that's why you have more toe out at the front and less at the back.
