Chaining, Shaping, & Instinctive Drift (Intro Psych Tutorial #64)

In this video I describe the how conditioning to be used to train more complex behaviors. This can be accomplished with chaining, which involves linking together previously conditioned behaviors, and shaping, which involves reinforcing successive approximations of a desired behavior. Next I provide examples of behaviors which cannot be conditioned due to biological constraints on learning described by Keller and Marian Breland.

Why did you leave out backward chaining?

I've omitted it because most introductory courses only cover the general concept of chaining and don't go into detail on variations and applications, which might be covered in more specific classes.

@@PsychExamReview so your target is a survey Psych 100 course? I thought it was a note for a Behavior Mod course. Nonetheless Back Chaining is more salient than Premack for freshmen

@@christopheclugston This series probably does cover a bit more detail than an intro class but was designed based on explaining the concepts presented in the most commonly used intro psych textbooks (of course, textbooks always cover more than a course can manage in a semester). Premack is mentioned in a few (not in detail), haven't seen backward chaining in any intro texts though. Anyway, if I ever do a series more specific to Behavior Modification I'll be sure to include it, thanks for commenting!

@@PsychExamReview my B. S. In psychology was done probably long before you started high school and survey texts have changed. I was fortunate to go to a university with a strong behaviorist department and had several courses in Operant conditioning along with training rats to do complex behaviors and none of that was without back chaining which was mentioned in probably the second week of class after Thorndike and Watson

I think the term was adapted from the Brelands' work but I think there's some debate about how appropriate it is to liken it to instinctual behavior. That said, I'm not an animal trainer so I guess I don't really have a dog in that fight 😁
