Fujimoto (author of the Manga) tweeted about this today. The prank Denji and Power did to Aki was putting poop on his face when he was sleepy. Presumably, the cat's poop. Understandably, he was pissed due to that.

I really appreciated mature response from Makima about the importance of a connection, to Denji's frustration with his dissapointment of his immature dream. I just thought it was so well done and that small moment just did wonders for Denji's character development.

Also, Manga Spoilers: Since she is the Control devil and fought Pochita prior to him eventually finding and staying with Denji, its actually very possible she is quite older than that, as she likely would either not age after a certain point or slower than normal.

Well, she's alive on earth so if she came the normal way of having died in hell and being reincarnated here on earth she wouldn't have her prior memories, so if that was 20-some years ago then she'd still theoretically have the maturity of a typical mid-20s office lady. On the other hand theoretically she could have come through a portal like we see later in the manga.

I liked Denji's dialogue about pondering his attained goals too. Even it was from a comedic scenario, it applies to all goals and dreams in general. People that "get to the top" will then ask "What now? What's really my life's purpose? Was it really about the goal or the chase?" Denji comedically suffered existential crisis but in reality it was deep and relatable.

MAPPA did a great job with this episode though I wish we could get the episodes quicker they feel like 5 mins long not 20. We get the queen of anxiety Kobeni herself though she’s not in too prominent of a role just yet. And Aki’s backstory is finally adapted, it does a great job demonstrating just how terrifying the Gun Devil is. Also Power is best girl regardless of size. It also can’t be 9/11 since CSM takes place in 1997.

Well, it does take place in 1997 but it's an alternate universe. For starters devils are commonplace lol, but there's other things like the Soviet Union still existing too. It's plausible that this is CSM universe's equivalent of 9/11. I think that much is strongly implied through the news broadcast imagery

Unless you're dealing with time travel / intentionally confusing flashbacks where figuring out what events take place when is important, or a setting where things seem low tech at first only to be a small part of a higher tech world (or high tech secretly existing in an otherwise low tech world), no one in their right mind would ever say that a date is a spoiler.

One thing I love about Fujimoto's writing is how he is able to make something so ridiculous and use it to mean something deep. Like how Denji's goal is to touch boobs but underlying all that it also shows how damage he also is because to him touching boobs is already a really big dream to have. And then went on about philosophical questions about reaching goals, like is it worth if it means it might not be as satisfying as you thought it would be.

Great discussion, again - really glad you two are enjoying the series so much! I love Himeno - she's a great example of how Fujimoto understands and writes his women as *people*, even amongst/in spite of the goofy horniness going on in the narrative. She's powerful and cool in ways that aren't about sexuality (already clearing a disappointingly low bar set by most Shonen sorts of things), she's deeply flawed in very real and grounded ways, and she has goals and desires that motivate her. A detail communicated as narration in the manga that I understand not necessarily making it in to the adaptation (Makima doesn't say it, and the show hasn't used and tonally wouldn't suit a narrator), but that I nonetheless still miss: the time the Gun Devil spent at nations across the globe and the local death tolls. It really builds the suspense and fear surrounding the Gun Devil (while still ominously not showing us even a glimpse of it!) and drives home the thematic tie to and commentary on gun violence in the real world. November 18 10:00 a.m. The Gun Devil hits Japan for 26 seconds. This is the arc that hooked me in the manga thoroughly, I can't wait to see what y'all think of the rest of it. What's really fun is they're stopping at great stopping points rather than at the ends of chapters all of the time. Fujimoto is really good at using absurd circumstances to explore really real themes like Denji's disappointed reaction to touching titties. He does this a lot throughout pretty much all of his works, and I'd really recommend reading Look Back and Goodbye, Eri as some banger examples of this.

The author of Chainsaw man is a Movie Buff in Both Western and other stuff that is why the opening had many movie references. The phasing, panels and story is more of a movie style of direction specially in the authors other one shots Fire punch and Good bye Eri are more movie format than chainsaw man, while chainsaw man is a balance of Anime and Movie style of story telling.

Lmao, I've been waiting for you guys to get to this episode, as far as showing how it's not just a simple "lewd" show where touching boobs is held out to be this amazingly important goal. I also loved how so many reactors were thinking something like either 'it's not going to happen' and something would get in the way, that Denji wouldn't just unambiguously achieve his goal in episode 4, others thought the plot would be Denji and Power in a relationship with her making more "deals" or something. Fujimoto's writing is always so unpredictable, so it's so fun seeing people theorize - usually incorrectly.
