In this video we get down to building a surface drive outboard using an old seagull outboard and a Stihl 088 chainsaw. My home town was hit with flashfloods and heavy rain so what a perfect time to take it for a test run!

Your ideas at the end are great (the expansion chamber for more power and exhaust tip below surface, the flywheel to make it not stall as much, and of course a longer stick for more balance and more control) impatient to see this Lil boat on flat water going for a rip

You’re having the stalling issue because the chainsaw doesn’t make much torque, when the prop bites it doesn’t have the torque to spin it. I run a belt drive v twin on my surface drive in my big boat and when the props torque up you’ll feel the motor drop rpm and you’ll feel the boat Jump forward pretty hard. Good to see you got it working toward the end, you build some really neat stuff!

thankyou. I had the chainsaw motor apart today and it barely has a flywheel so I'm thinking thats why it stalls easily , I use a 13hp longtail on another boat and it doesn't stall but they have a big flywheel and are low reving, I would like a v twin surface drive they look fun and sound awesome ! Im doing some mods to the chainsaw surface drives so hopefully get another test on the weekend

There must be videos about tuning chainsaws. I used to watch Buckin' Billy Ray Smith who is a tree feller on Vancouver Island, and he uses several tuned McCulloch chainsaws, but does not do the tuning himself. I guess chainsaws only do their thing while running flat out, so are not designed to have any sort of a broad powerband. In fact they would pretty much definitely stall if the bar hits the tree at anything less than flat out, and I have no idea what you could do to change that. It's a very long time since I raced two strokes. In fact we used to call it Scrambling then, and not Motocross, but from what I remember, lower crankcase compression and a longer inlet manifold were supposed to produce a broader powerband. If you had a spare piston you could maybe try shortening the skirt to lower crankcase compression, but I can't thinking that it could all go horribly wrong and it would hardly run. That was the fastest we've seen the boat run though, so you seem to be going in the right direction.
@DktheWelder
@DktheWelder 3 жыл бұрын
It has a heap of power at full throttle but anything less it would stall when hitting logs or grass or whatever was under the water. I think a fly wheel would help and a could make an expansion chamber that kicks in at lower rpm
@bigjohnclark349
@bigjohnclark349 3 жыл бұрын
A flywheel is too much for that little crankshaft if running wide open and something stopped the. Motor the flywheel would ring off the end of your crankshaft brother the exhaust has the most to do with your power band it's very highly tuned

the only thing you need is a bigger chainsaw engine and the aggressive prop you had on the first time and you'll get a lot of speed with a bigger chainsaw engine cause the engine u have isn't powerful enough for the aggressive prop you'll get like 20-30mph difference with a bigger chainsaw motor and the big aggressive prop an expansion chamber will also add more power and create a powerband effect cant wait to see updates

think you should go to a 2cyl or a healthy single cyl would be ok to ,.. 2 stroke with a CVT drive set up...if you used your cv axle idea i think you could make it work with your surface drive you want.. you wouldn't have to worry about power and with a CVT your impeller or prop speed would not be a issue ... just an idea.. either way love the channel!!
