You did an outstanding job of keeping the saw LEVEL along the ground line, Dan. It is very difficult to do that, and use of the plastic wedges was a good idea, too. I've seen a lot of guys who REALLY bury their chain in the dirt when cutting stumps to ground level, because they dig into the ground accidentally.

My dad and I put old chains on all the time to cut down stumps. I've got a couple old chains specifically for cutting in the dirt. There's still a lot of good firewood in them stumps. Stay safe my friend

If you had many more to do, i would recommend a carbide chain. They do cut slower, and loosen up more. That being said, they dont get dull for a long and are great for dirty wood.

I dig down around the stump to give the power head room and try to keep the bar out of the dirt. It’s time consuming but it’s worth the effort

Doesn't make much of a difference unless you actually rinse the dirt off after digging around it. The dirts attached to the Stump where the dirt was resting at ground level. Same reason why cutting roots dulls the chain when trying to remove a Stump. It may have a slight benefit. But when u weigh out the time it takes doing it vs just giving her the beans and sharpening the saw after which ull have to do either way. Mise well just cut it as low as possible and call it a day.

This is the only reason I own semi-chisel chains. You did a great job don't cut yourself short!

That makes it look like a bigger area with the stumps gone. Old chains come in handy to use on stumps.

Looks like a good exercise for learning how to re-sharpen the chain. There are cases like yours when you have to sacrifice a chain to get the stumps out of your way. I enjoy your videos and look forward to viewing the progress on the new structure. Keep up the good jobs.

I’ve used Epsom salt in the past with good results. Drill holes, fill with the Epsom salt and cover with a tarp and check monthly👍

That’s what I save my old chains for. Unfortunately at my place they had animal runs and fence around the fields. I’m still finding the 100 year old barb wire. The best is when you find it with a brand new chain! 😩

If you have access to a garden hose try to wash the dirt off the stump to save the chain

I looked to see if anyone mentioned this: You can rent a stump grinder from Home Depot. It will remove the tree stump below ground level. They have big carbide teeth which you dont have to sharpen. If you cut the stump just above dirt level with your saw and then use the stump grinder to take below ground level. Rental is about $250 for a day.

Be sure to mark where those stumps are, so when you go to put your new building in, you do not have to hassle with trying to stake the building down through one or more of them! HA HA

If you cut with the top of the bar, it will pull wood chips INTO the cut and you won’t have to wedge the stump.

If you ever want to take them stumps down farther just drill some holes pour some used motor oil on them then build a fire on top than burn them that's what I do.

I think you forgot to read your manual. Two hands with one behind the break. This way, if you hit something and it kicks/back. You can stop it. Personal I like pausing, to add sticks to keep the cut open and weight off the bar. I also like to dress an older bar and use an older chain close to the end of its life. Lastly, the one looked like you were cutting below ground level but also appears to be on the edge of a ditch. So that's open to debate. Cutting below ground is not recommended.

A few of the shots the angle made it look worse than it was, also it wasn't as bad as it seemed due to there being a few inches of wood chips on the ground that I put down last year...granted there was still a little dirt but it went better than I thought it would.

I have a suggestion or you know suggestions are always you get what you pay for nothing. I would buy a couple bags of coal. The easy start stuff cut a ring around a metal barrel and start a fire right? On top of each one of them and just let them burn down in and kill. The roots suggestion done it a million times and it does work. I kind of kinda don't like the idea of the twigs that start growing back and that you have to keep cutting off Mr. Suggestion told you that. Ha ha

I am well aware this is the easiest and cheapest route for stump removal. But you won't need me to remind you of this because your back/spine will every time you run one over with the tractor from this day forward. 😅 Mulch will just hide them...

It is stump removal if you dig around the stump deep enough and hose the dirt off before cutting, so you cut below grade and shovel the dirt back on

I'm not sure you fully understand chains & chainsaws. You wouldn't want to use a new chain in an instance like this because hitting the dirt dulls it and takes the edge off, you'd want to use an older chain that has already somewhat lost the edge...that's the point of the title.
