@jonathanthemegageek I've read the books as well and I genuinely think this isn't a case of the monsters manipulating them but rather Rick and the other writers doubling down on the fact the God's do SUCK. It's a theme that drives the main plot of the 1st saga but it's always brushed off with things like "they're gods, they can't intervene". Here they're really going the extra mile to show that Percy and *that* character are two sides of the same coin and it makes complete sense why so many campers turn on the gods later on

I was blown away by their approach to this episode. That opening flashback wasn't in the books at all, but it set up the rest of the episode perfectly, and got me feeling all emotional too. And talk about subverting expectations -- the Arch fight started WAY differently in the book. There, they weren't confronted by Echidna at all until they were at the top of the Arch. They went because they had a layover and Annabeth was a huge architecture nerd. Since the elevator was too small, Annabeth and Grover started heading down and Percy was left alone with Echidna at the top, where she attacked him. Which is fine, but what they did in this episode was so much more exciting! I gasped when Percy tricked Annabeth into swapping places. It was such a badass thing to do, and such a Percy thing to do too. Especially since they added the part about Athena being mad at Annabeth because of him. I can't wait to see Annabeth and Grover's reaction next episode. It's going to be iconic!

A small, mythologically-consistent detail in the show that wasn’t in the books: the Chimera (which is actually its name, not breed or species) is female, but the book’s depiction was as a male which Echidna named “Sonny”. The beast being female yet having a male lion’s mane in visual depiction is kind of an in-joke amongst fanatics, as it signifies how many people didn’t understand sexual dimorphism (at least not prominently). I also liked the design as it consolidated the ideas behind the chimera - instead of three heads, the lion head has the goat horns while the snake is still the tail and more scorpion-like.
@Gradestar1010 ай бұрын
This chimera seems to have been mixed w/ th manticore given its scorpion-like tail w/ poisonous spines. In th books she only had 3 heads in her oldest incarnation in 'pj n th greek heroes', while in 'tlt' she only had 2 heads. Btw, in 'th demigods files' it's said that apparently th chimeras in th world of pj are a species, w/ th males they have th head of a lion, th body of a goat, a blood-caked mane, n a 10-foot-long diamondback snake-headed tail which grows out of its shaggy behind while th larger females have th head of lioness, th body of a goat, w/ a 6-foot-long horns on her head n a 15-foot-long king cobra-headed tail on her behind

A funny story, the actor who plays Percy has to usually get self tanner on because the Volume would reflect off of him, but for when he was poisoned, they only put red around his eyes. This was one of the scenes cut out of the movie that is in the books that people were really upset about because first its kind of important for Percy to know he can do that for both what I suspect will be the penultimate fight but also in the next book he is the companion on another camper's quest and that camper kind of rationalized bringing him because of that. But one thing the books don't do that the show could correct, is we never follow up with Chimera and her mother (there is a throwaway scene in another story set) but it would seem like she is the perfect active enemy for Percy. Kind of a mirror image of his mother.

@WarGrowlmon1810 ай бұрын
He's the son of the Sea God, breathing underwater is one of his most basic abilities. That's nothing honestly. And yeah, he's seriously powerful, but children of the Big Three tend to be. Thalia, after she's resurrected from the pine tree, is pretty powerful too as is her Roman brother Jason. Full brother no less, not a half sibling. Nico di Angelo can teleport through shadows and command THE DEAD!!! But Percy tends to be the most powerful of them all, even amongst the Big Three kids. He can control water, does some pretty cool stuff with it honestly, he's caused some pretty powerful storms a few times (Poseidon is also the Stormbringer) AND he once caused Mount Saint Helens to erupt by accident. With himself inside.

The Chimera wasn't too egregious, but a part of me would have preferred it was actually the chimera of myth, rather than whatever it was. The chimera was a creature with a lion head and goat head, and a snake for a tail. So, I get that that would be a little difficult to make so it didn't look kind of goofy, but a part of me really wished they tried. And they left out one of my favorite jokes from the book: "Isn't that a kind of anteater?"
@Gradestar1010 ай бұрын
In th book she has th head of a lion w/ a mane stained w/ dried blood, a goat-like body n a rattlesnake instead of a tail. This is her canonical description in her most recent incarnation. In 'pj n th greek heroes' she has a different appearance, more similar to her mythological counterpart, w/ th size of a mammoth, th front part of th body like a lion, th back part of a dragon w/ a snake-tail n a goat's head that breathes fire on its back at th junction of th 2 halves of th body. Percy says that monsters often change appearance over time to explain th differences. Btw, in th homer's myth th chimera is described practically like the 1 in th show, w/ a single lion's head n a dragon's tail
@junkyuseum10 ай бұрын
I liked the different approach they did with the initial confrontation with Echidna but I hate how they keep cutting the climax of fight scenes in each episode. Percy put up with fights he almost died in better than this. I really hope the show does not focus on his water powers to prove his power as a forbidden child cause, seriously, as a swordsman, Percy’s already incredible.
@emilylewis537310 ай бұрын
I think in some ways they had to cut to time because they cut the time at camp. in the books he is at camp for about a week and trains with luke and is shown, via luke, that he is a quick study as a swordsman. I assume they will spend more time with sword play as the seasons happen.

@@nicoleteregoYeah, I think this one only covered one chapter of the book too. It's still A LOT better than the movies though!!! And it follows canon pretty closely too. The fight at the Arch basically ended there too. The next chapter, where he's at the bottom of the river, is a pretty short one so they'll probably only need a couple of minutes at the start of the next episode. The only thing missing from the ending scene of this one is the Nereid telling Percy to go to the beach in Santa Monica and Percy's internal thoughts about giving up. The river healed the poison. In the book, he only got bit during the fight at the top of the Arch, the episode dragged that out much more than the book ever did. BUT Percy's water healing DOES have its limits: he's stung by a Pit Scorpion near the end of the book and the water is only able to hold it back briefly. Chiron has to heal him from that one and he was lucky to survive it.
