This Yoga practice done while sitting in a chair strengthens the legs, abdominal muscles, and lower back, and stretches the hips and hamstrings. Gentle enough for seniors and people with arthritis or limited mobility, and yet a good energizer for an afternoon pick-me-up at your desk!

Great videos and so easy to follow along. thank you. Some having a full hip replacement, it is difficult to get the leg lift to chest without pain but your showing these exercises slowly, it can be done. The exercises at minute 14 can be easily done lying in bed, and has helped unbelievably! Thanks so much.

Thank you Darcie for the chair yoga for lower body. I've been checking out various videos for seated yoga and especially like this one because how slow you are doing this. Sometimes yoga classes feel like they are going way too fast. Also like that this one is challenging yet gentle at the same time.

I just came across this chair workout and needed it today! I love to exercise but deal with chronic back pain (since I was 19) and have times when it flares up. I normally do weight training/kettle bells, which has helped, but obviously can't do those types of exercises when my back goes out. I decided to checkout some chair workouts that I could use for rehab when I have a flare up and really enjoyed this workout! I plan on doing this one for the next week until my back strengthens up and highly recommend it- it was safe enough for me to use and I automatically felt better. Thanks for posting!

Chair yoga for lower back excellent but I have v bad backache. Can I do these exercises. Your demo is superb and on can do it well following your instructions. Thanks dear

Hi Leena. My advice is to do the practice at a slower pace or a smaller range of motion, especially if your pain increases either during the practice or after doing the video. Each person's back pain is different, so my advice is to do what you can, even small, slow movements, without increasing your pain. Good luck to you!

Any contraindications for those who had hip replacement surgery?

Hi Steve. It really depends on your surgery (where the incision is) and on your recovery. It's best to ask your doctor what movements you should avoid, if any. After a hip replacement, it's important to strengthen the muscles around your hip to increase the stability of the joint. When you're stretching your hip, be careful not to overstretch it - i.e. don't push into a stretch, go easy instead. Thanks for your comment!

Yes! My oldest chair yoga student was 102! As long as it feels good and doesn't increase your pain, you can do it!

Hi Leena. I teach classes similar to this one to seniors in retirement residences who are in their 80's and 90's. However, it depends on the individual whether this practice is suitable for them. The only way to know is to try it and practice it carefully and slowly at first, feeling free to refrain from certain movements. Remember to never force your body to move in a way that is painful. I hope this helps!

Too much hip flexion. Our hip flexors work hard enough all day.

Hi Peggy. Thanks for your comment. You're right, this practice has a lot of active hip flexion. I'm sorry you found it to be too much. I find that while the hips are flexed for much of the day if we're sitting for long stretches, this is a passive flexion rather than an active one. Strengthening the hips through actively engaging and flexing them is needed to balance the amount of passive hip flexion we do every day. This practice also engages the core muscles so they learn how to support hip flexion. Thanks anyways for giving it a try!
