I just discovered that there is an expansion called the power of gold that addresses the game speed, it has only two cards that introduce 2 new house rules, the first rule is that each time a player gets a new cube he has a choice to pay gold instead of in order to avoid taking a new card (rules used when cards run out in original game) ... 2nd rule is that every time you remove/destroy your own building you get 2 gold back from the bank... this mechanism can cut game speed to half... there is also 2nd expansion coming that introduces Africa and Artic and addresses all these issues you mentioned as well as the end game!

The core engine looks fascinating but the shell of point salady VP collection plus possible blocks from random exploration makes me nervous as they are not things like. Wallace is very hit of miss for me. Usually some great ideas but it's no guarantee they translate into a good game. This one has nagging reminders of the fantasy deck builder/empire builder (Mythotopia). Great fun for an hour then meandered into a frustrating endgame. I don't think any designer is very reliable in this respect. Possibly Uwe Rosenberg but even he has loads of games I do not like though they are well thought of and probably objectively good. (Ones with tile laying) .
